Title: I Discovered The Real Identity Of The Poltergeist King
Post by: theplottwist on July 13, 2017, 10:40:27 PM
...And it is Eric Lecarde.

No, I'm not serious. Still, I dunno about any of you guys, but I did notice a curious parallel.

On the English version of the CVIII manual, the Poltergeist King (a non-existent character on the Japanese version) is explained as having entrusted the Belmont family with the subweapons AND the Vampire Killer (at the time "Mystic Whip"). Beyond that, "Poltergeist Masters" are responsible for the items dropped from candles and the such.

Cue Eric Lecarde. Wise ghost-dude with a lot of advice. Gives Jonathan subweapons AND a powerful legendary weapon (the Alucard Spear). And years later IGA would go on record revealing that the items dropped from candles are "gifts" from the departed...

...huh. Gifts... from poltergeist masters... Hm.

This is most likely just a funny coincidence that I wanted to point out. But I wonder if it is possible that IGA was aware of this and did it on purpose. CVIII IS his favorite Castlevania, after all. We'll never know...

As your post implied, due to Iga's live of CVIII, it's probably that the PK was the inspiration for "Wind".

There's an official explanation for the candles and their contents? I wonder where SotN's Cube of Zoe fits into it.

Yep! The explanation is that the candles are the people's souls captured by Death or vampires. When you destroy the candle, you free them, so they leave you a "thank you" gift in the forms of Hearts or weapons. IGA said this idea came from a Japanese candle that represents life.

About Cube of Zoe: It materializes stuff. So it could be that Alucard (a half-vampire) is not actually getting "thank you" anything, and the Cube is forcing the gift to appear. 100% speculation though.

Weren't the subweapons in LOI left by "previous warriors"?

I always wondered if Pumpkin was a reference to the poltergeist king.  He starts with the Vampire Killer in LoI and in CoD, he increases item drop rates via the massive luck boost he'll give you.

I don't remember such mention anywhere on the game. I do remember Rinaldo saying the whip was "stronger than any dead man's sword". But seeing how effective the subweapons are, I don't think they count as an ordinary weapon.

The subweapons are found in candles also, which could tie into Iga's explanation and this one:

(This is the text I was referring to)

Rinaldo: It's what he always does when he starts the game. You came unarmed. Your courage astonishes me.

Leon: I do have a weapon, just not my sword. That belongs to the Company, and I left it behind, when I gave up my title.

Rinaldo: Honest to a fault.

Leon: I heard that many hunters have met their end here. If that's the case, getting weapons shouldn't be hard.

If they were hunters specifically, there's no reason they wouldn't have been using holy water, crosses, daggers and so forth.

Ahhh it's true, yes yes. Makes sense.

All this talk about random guys that give items made me remember this:

At 2:33.

Sure, he seems to be an homage to Simon's Quest and Vampire Killer (MSX), yet I felt the need to include this here.

All I know about the the cube of zoe, is that Zoe, is the daughter of the translator. I think he thought that the materialize cube doesn't sound good in English.
