Title: If Castlevania had a Sci-Fi setting instead of it's usual Fantasy setting?
Post by: The_Bizarre_Tr00per on August 18, 2017, 10:12:19 PM
This has been an idea that was roaming my brain for quite a while: What if Castlevania had a Sci-Fi setting?

Here's how i thing it would be: Doctor Mathias Akula Cronqvist was once a human who was a genius in Bio-engineering who modified his own DNA strains to, in his own twisted mind `evolve`, into something far greater, thus becoming: Dracula!

Simon Belmont would technically be Master Chief wielding a Plasma Whip.

Death, well, he would be still Dr. Akula's eternal buddy (Untill the Demon Castle War of 1999), but he would more be Drakula's first Bio-engineered patient that went horribly wrong, he then ressurected him and gave him Psychokinetic abilities, thus making D34TH the `technically-living` walking/floating corpse he is.

The bosses of Castlevania 1? Dr. Akula's bio-engineered patients that have been heavily modified to the genetic level.

But that's my take for a Sci-Fi Castlevania, i'm more intrested in what would be your take for a Sci-Fi Castlevania be. =)

Wrote about this way back, but was with spaceships instead (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php?topic=7539.msg168467#msg168467). It was a cringe moment in my life that I'm not really ashamed of :P

I'm sure Waffle can create a fanfic for this topic.

Wasn't Getsu Fuuma Den a futuristic Castlevania?

Kinda.

The game does take place far into the future (14,672) and there are hints to a Fuuma-Castlevania connection first established on that game, then repeated on Harmony of Despair.

But the game itself lacks any kind of Sci-fi tones.

Would the bestiary be as great?  It seems like there is much more to choose from when you tap into the annals of fantasy/mythology as opposed to sci-fi, but maybe I'm just not as familiar with that genre.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting the idea isn't cool -- this was just my first thought.

The best things about zeroG = 8 directional whipping, and holy water keeps burning for a long time

It can work, But it needs more cyberpunk for glorious aesthetics.
Otherwise, the story could be X-kalibur 2097 but with a whip instead, it's not much.. but a start.

Castlevania did get kinda sci-fi in AoS. Specifically with Soma's Positron rifle.

Ignoring the obvious fact that is an Alternate Universe
(click to show/hide)
and in my opinion they kinda took the spotlight from the magic and fantasy elements, something important in a Castlevania title to me.
I personally like the Sci-Fi elements, but restricted to sections like Frankenstein's laboratories, in the same way Clock Punk is usually rectricted to the Castle's Clocktower, allowing the game to have more variety.

I feel like it would just be metroid with a plasma whip replacing the arm cannon.

This is actually a marvel villain named Whiplash, but it's not a bad idea for what a future Belmont could look like.

This picture already look like it could be Trevor Belmont ready to use those plasma whips on Drakula's genetics  abominations =D

Here's an idea on what D34TH would look like in this Sci-Fi Castlevania.

Now that you mention it, LoS did have a fair amount of sci fi to it. I liked that they went with this sort of demonic sci-fi route, bio engineered virus that turned people into demons and shit, though it's just too bad that it was all sort of half baked.

if Castlevania was scifi, I'd say take a look at Doom for another example of sci-fi with demons and shit.

I never got around to playing Lords of Shadow 2, one of the reasons being that when I first saw the trailer, I really disliked all of the sci-fi elements I was seeing. I was expecting the traditional haunting atmosphere of the Castlevania games, and instead I was watching footage of some futuristic lab and killer robots.

The atmosphere and setting of the Castlevania games has always been a fundamental part of the experience for me, so I would't want to see it switch over to sci-fi.
