Nothing to shocking or new.  But Iga outright states that Simon's Quest was instrumental in paving the way for SoTN.

I can see the non-liner gameplay of CVII as being an inspiration, but SotN definitely took some ques from Metroid in terms of non-liner gameplay and exploration.

it makes sense but CV2 is still in a league of its own having a connected open world with realtime changing weather/day/night, TOWNS with actual townspeople (not just some mere OOE village that needs to be filled with villagers), and unorthodox progression that rewards exploration and solving secrets,  overall CV2 is a genre in itself.   it really has lots of potential with its own class of Castlevania style and stuff.

SOTN type games are more like Metroid, while Castlevania II is really its own thing, though yea it would have been cooler with a selection of hunters to choose from and play as instead of reusing Simon for another game.  They could added Sonia and other characters.

If there's any earlier Castlevanias that resembles SOTN, it's the MSX adaptation of Akumajou Dracula AKA Vampire Killer, only difference is once you find a key and get access on another area you will never go back on the previous area, there's also a map feature but it's more limited to use.

OOE is the final realisation of Simon's Quest, with a proper Castlevania, proper bosses (some of the best in the series) and a real final boss. Shanoa's line about being the morning star that will vanquish the night (in English) even implies it.

I don't think it implies it (sometimes a reference is just a reference, after all), but I do think you're right about the rest. From the start, Iga has well and clearly loved Simon's Quest and it's obviously been a huge inspiration for him -- this wasn't something we in the Castlevania fandom have ever really disagreed with en masse. The interview just makes it official. I totally agree with you: I think that Simon's Quest's design and feel was front and center in Iga's mind as he made Order of Ecclesia, because it is very much a perfection of that game's formula in a lot of ways. I think OOE has more in common with SQ than Symphony did, really.

This.

The part of SOTN that reminded me most of SQ was collecting the body parts (relics in SOTN). Aside from this, Super Metroid was the only real comparison in my mind with SOTN as a kid.
