It's nice to see SNK revisit an old franchise, and it's on a system I don't own. SNK seems to finally be back, though I will miss the old pixel art.

with their resources and momentum, they can get a side team to port and localize Samurai Shodown RPG on PS4 and Switch!

they could get waves of profits marketing it right, plus it still looks and plays great these days!  it's literally the only fighting game RPG of its kind,
 and it has Romancing SaGa and Octopath Traveler qualities to it too.

There is one other SNK RPG like game out there, KoF Kyo, released on the PS1, plus Athena has had a few side games, though I don't think any of them are RPG's. I am a fan of Athena, both Goddess, and ancestor, and surprisingly, outside of Athena on NES (I need to get that on PSN, the arcade version), all the 2D KoF's and Psycho Soldier on PSN, I have none of her offshoot games.

Isn't Athena from the original NES/Arcade game (done by SNK) the same one in KoF? Or is she just a fan service character with the warrior outfit?

The KoF and original Athena arcade gals are different Athena's. The KoF Athena is actually a descendant of the arcade/NES/ Neo Geo Battle Coliseum/SVC Chaos Athena.

You'll want to see in detail how SNK can take the SFIV style and actually make it look amazing.
