Title: Vergeben Predicts New Castlevania Game AND New Castlevania Collection
Post by: AxeLord on September 18, 2018, 11:09:14 AM
Seasoned Smash Bros. leaker Vergeben just dropped this bomb yesterday:

Quote
The Castlevania games that I know of two separate things. One is a collection of past titles with Symphony of the Night as 'the selling point' lead game. The other is a brand new Castlevania game. I don't know when or where they're going to be announced at.

Link to the full post. (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/234547-super-smash-bros-ultimate/77011618?jumpto=9#9)

Vergeben has a history or being an incredibly reliable source - his initial leak of Smash Ultimate (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/234547-super-smash-bros-ultimate/76614511) was proven entirely correct. He called out Ridley, Simon, and the fact that the game would include all past characters; and he did all of this before the first "EVERYONE IS HERE!" teaser. He's made himself very well trusted in the Smash community.

I'm not sure what to make of this leak. It's definitely a possibility, especially with all the attention the series has been getting lately. What do you guys think? I really want it to be true.

Damn, that would be awesome. Given the inclusion of Simon and Richter in SSBU, and the popularity of the Netflix show, I can see this being a reality.

As with all rumors about Konami doing literally anything gamer-friendly: I'll believe it not when I see it, but when I actually have my hands on it.

Like Mr. Perry always said,

(click to show/hide)

What would modern day Konami do with the franchise? 2D? 3D? Classicvania? Metroidvania? Microtransactionvania? I honestly don't have a guess that I am confident in.

This isn't a prediction more a logical conclusion.
Smash Bros is gold-mine for renewed interests; Just look at Earthbound and ESPECIALLY Fire Emblem.
Konami might not be the sharpest tools in the shed, but even Stevie Wonder can see this opportunity to strike the iron while it's hot.

He hinted at this before the Smash reveal, too.

And, in unrelated news, Super Bomberman R was updated again, now featuring more Castlevania characters and even a Castlevania-themed stage.

Something's clearly coming. Outside of obviously Bomberman, why is this one IP being so much treatment this year? It's being emphasized in other games, too!

Under the name "Castlevania Requiem".

Totally betting that's the name of their collection.

I can see Smash basically becoming the Shenron of old franchises i.e. a means to revive them (by first rekindling public interest)

Castlevania needs a collection with SOTN leading the pack.

I was wondering about this rumor once Simon got officially announced.  Gonna patiently wait until there are official announcements and I am holding the games in my hands sobbing hysterically.

The Castlevania Requiem stuff was already trademarked, so we're probably days or hours away from an announcement.

While this is all great news, I'll be pretty bummed if the "collection" is just Rondo and Symphony...

I mean that's basically just The Dracula X Chronicles without the remake.

But in terms of new games, as long as it's in something resembling the old timeline I'll be more than happy.

Vergeben was right yet again, that means a new game is on it's way too.

TGS is tomorrow, I think we will get an official announcement for Requiem this weekend.

I'm excited! I hope it's for all platforms because I would love to play Rondo and SotN on my Switch in handheld mode!

Well.....Konami seems to gain ground against IGA. Since the Castlevania collection has turned out to be true, then it might turned out true also the new Castlevania game and if, i repeat if there is a new Castlevania game, with RotN being delayed to 2019 i don't think it will do good for it's reputation, since half of the backers are already mad.

I’m wondering if the reason Castlevania 1 wasn’t put on the Nintendo Classics on Switch is because of this rumored collection. It would make sense that Konami would allow for one of their most iconic games to be put on the Switch unless there was a reason for it not to be - like a collection.
Grady’s is a great classic but it’s not really a killer app. My guess is that they allowed them to use Gradius because there’s no plans for that game.
Totally going out on a limb here but that’s my guess

If the collection is just Rondo and Symphony then it's not in my concern (as well as most people, I believe)
As Symphony... maybe only tiny little port difference can attract SotN RTA players to buy it. If no difference from pre-existence ports it will be bombed.

Probably, it's not worth their while to get 200k online sales if they can use the leverage to sell 1 million copies of a CV collection.

As Symphony... maybe only tiny little port difference can attract SotN RTA players to buy it. If no difference from pre-existence ports it will be bombed.

It better not be the XBLA port.
It better be a complete port which includes the SSOTN extras, otherwise it will still do well but isn't exactly offering anything new.

Awesome. But I hope the collection is bigger than those two games. Still, Isabelle got announced for Smash recently, and she was yet another Smash character connected to Vergeben's statements. I've been saying for a while, too many things have come true from leaks/rumors related to the Castlevania collection and new Castlevania game. Interesting times. I think Vergeben said that Adventure Rebirth could be in the cards, and if that's the case, there's surely a few more games. But then again, that could be unrelated.

Vergeben mentioned this new game will be on Nintendo Switch.

Given it's supposedly on a Nintendo console, a compilation of the more recent Nintendo Castlevanias wouldn't hurt.

Perhaps they'd place AR as an extra given it only came out for the Wii.

There's no Castlevania on their TGS line-up list of titles, as seen here: https://gematsu.com/2018/09/konami-announces-tgs-2018-lineup

However, they can do a ninja announcement online.

OR...

They would wait until around Halloween for the announcement so that it coincides with the Netflix show.

I think this is probably the most likely option, as Konami's remaining marketing people definitely have a couple patterns and this (Castlevania stuff in October) is historically one of them.

Konami's official Twitter is plugging the show and, particularly, the staff on the show.

They're probably waiting for season 2 to drop and get all of the users moving to watch it with an announcement of "hey fans, the games this show is based on are getting re-released!". Make an announcement at a release seems to be one of the "in" things companies are doing, something Sega's now doing with Yakuza games.

I have to say, between the upcoming October Microsoft hardware/software event (https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/7/17831262/microsoft-surface-event-date-invite), the upcoming October Google Hardware/Software event (https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/14/16306472/google-pixel-2-launch-date-october), a new season of Doctor Who in October (http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/doctor-who/feature/a822309/doctor-who-season-11-air-date-cast-trailer-episodes-companion/), a new season of Netflix Castlevania in October, and now a possible new Castlevania game + a compilation announcement in October?

I think my October is about to get very, very geeky.

Dare I dream?

If they are going to be a little savy, it’s be nice if they’d include the original sotn dub as well as the Dracula X Chronicles version.  Heck, throw in the both versions (including Maria), DXC RoB 2.5D game, and the Snes Dracula X to give us the complete dracula x experience.  Oh and toss in the Saturn version too.  And what the heck, why not Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night lol.

Maybe Richter's appearance in Smash is indicative of things to come.

At first I thought it was going to be some type of general CV collection. However, if it is a Dracula X Anthology it will most likely be one "complete" version of SOTN, hopefully with a Japanese option, Rondo, and DXC. I agree that XX should really be thrown in but it isn't a quote-unquote canon entry.

Title: Re: Vergeben Predicts New Castlevania Game AND New Castlevania Collection
Post by: Lumi Kløvstad on September 22, 2018, 12:54:04 AM
XX should really be thrown in but it isn't a quote-unquote canon entry.

DXX is just an alternate, streamlined take on Rondo's canon for the most part, so technically it is a canon entry when push comes to shove. If you examine most of the plots that derive from or reference the events of Richter's life, they fall into two categories: either specifically mentioning the events of Symphony of the Night, or drawing from a generalized version of Rondo's plot that could easily refer just as well to DXX.

I think the reason that was done for so long was because Rondo spent over 15 years locked out of the North American market and DXX was our only point of contact with that story, so there was a "soft requirement" to compose references that could apply to either version of the story. Ironically, even Symphony only references characters from Rondo who reprise in that game: Terra, Iris, and Annette aren't mentioned at all, and there are no specific references to any of the other bosses in a narrative sense (though several of Rondo's bosses do appear again to confront Alucard).

Honestly, it's a good approach, and Dracula X Chronicles later took the best of both game's distinct plot elements -- or at least took Rondo and then added DXX's original elements back in.

Really, they're all canon because they're all the same story just with some different emphasis from different storytellers, and none of the differences in storytelling have made or broken any other later tales that tied into this one (so far).

Same fairy tale, different storytelling traditions.

Kind of like King Arthur, but gothier. And with pretty boys with whips.

It never made sense for DXX to exist in the same universe as Rondo, though. The intro claims hundred of years have passed since Simon Belmont, and Anette and Maria are made to be siblings. Both those facts are straight up contradicted by other material. There's also nothing that suggest that all Castlevania games are unreliable accounts of what really happened. That's fine as headcanon but I think it's a lame way to shoehorn a redundant  story into the timeline.

Exactly, I'm glad someone beat me to the punch on this..
It's also clear that DXX/VK Maria and Rondo/ Sotn Maria are not the same person, yes they share the same name but that's it. DXX/ VK Maria isn't a warrior or mage who uses animal spirits of any kind.

This is personally why I place it on the alternate timeline. However I will say that I believe the "Hundreds of years after Simon Belmont" as a mistranslation as I used to own the game's cover and it specifically mentions something to the effect of 100 years passing or "It's been 100 years" referencing the resurrection cycle and implying the original Castlevania/ SCVIV occurring prior. Bear in mind this cover is of Vampire's Kiss and not DXX.

We all know this compilation is just going to be a crappy emulator with a PS4 skin, but for the sake of discussion: what features would you like to see?

Edit: Here's the description from the rating board:

Quote
This is collection of two action platformers in which players assume the role of a vampire hunter battling Dracula and other creatures. From a side-scrolling perspective, players traverse Dracula’s castle to kill fantastical enemies (e.g., zombies, demons, minotaurs). Characters use whips, swords, axes, and magic to defeat enemies. Pixelated blood is depicted when players’ character and creatures are killed; some attacks result in decapitation and dismemberment of creatures, including a boss character that loses its body parts and entrails. As players progress, they may encounter female creatures (e.g., harpies, medusa) that have exposed buttocks and are depicted topless, though there are no discernible details (i.e., no nipples).

Title: Re: Vergeben Predicts New Castlevania Game AND New Castlevania Collection
Post by: zangetsu468 on September 24, 2018, 04:28:25 AM
"You play as a Vampire hunter" kind of doesn't make sense regarding Alucard, but the rest of the description fits SOTN to a "T". Specifically 2 action platformers also could fit that bill if it were two iterations of the same game, but there are 3 iterations of SOTN, therefore the two titles are more than likely going to be SOTN and Rondo, given they occur chronologically in succession.

I'll tell you what, I'll be buying two copies, because SOTN is damn hard to get a hold of for a decent price these days and any discs still in existence have probably been raped harder than the minds of young gamers who played Polybius.

What I'd like is a complete version of SOTN with all language options, include the character intros, the running boots, additional areas, the additional few tracks and and the sound quality from the SS version and for God sake include the full artwork from the succubus - you know what I'm talking about...

Dare I ask that if they're re-releasing SOTN they also add extras in the main game, as well as boss rush mode and Level 1 hard max cap??

I would love a boss rush mode, and it's a pretty reasonable request.  But I'm guessing Nagumo is probably right about it just being a lame barebones emulation.

Now a less likely idea?  I would love if they basically just included Harmony of Despair as an online mode.  Maybe add a character or two, maybe Albus, or the Cv3 trio using the SoTN sprites.

Apparently another user on ResetERA has been hinting a new 'vania game has been in production for a while, and Konami was anticipating the Netflix show to be successful. (https://www.resetera.com/threads/castlevania-requiem-symphony-of-the-night-rondo-of-blood-rated-for-ps4-in-korea.69411/page-15#post-13031578) Apparently  he hinted at this randomly a few months ago, too. (https://www.resetera.com/threads/i-suspect-a-new-castlevania-game-is-in-the-works.60746/page-6#post-11295112)

I think this means if there is a game - and there likely is, because this story is moving in one direction - I'm going with a Dracula's Curse reimagining based on the show.

A Dracula's Curse remake sounds like such a no brainer right now.

Exhibit Z-recurving-back-to-goddamn-A that Konami's been lacking brains for a disturbingly long time.
Side note: Gods above it feels good to have this forum busy again. Well, sort of. Relatively busy. Compared to usual.

So if this does turn out to be a PS4-exclusive Dracula X rerelease, honestly, I don't think I have any cause to spring for it; I have no PS4, and I'm completely tuckered out of Dracula X and all its characters besides. That latter bit is my fault: a result of massively overplaying Symphony of the Night for damn near 15 years and loving Dracula X Chronicles a little too well in high school. But it's caused a decade-plus burnout that is evidently not going to end soon -- I just booted up DXC again for the first time in several years and just noped straight out of it within 10 minutes.

Hopefully the newborn Castlevania babbies who weren't old enough to appreciate and enjoy what a gift DXC was will enjoy it this time around.

And if so, it'd make sense if they're the PSP versions, because that was the only time Rondo was translated, and both were optimized for widescreen. That'd also explain why it might be for PS4 only...

I'm not totally surprised that Konami would do this, though. This sort of feels like the Castlevania atmosphere that's been created by the most vocal fans and more casual gamers, especially outside of the community proper. I mean, yes, there are the vocal crowds who like the GBA era the best or the pre-Rondo titles, but my personal experience with reading reactions has been that the mainstream narrative about Castlevania over the last 12 or so years has become that Rondo was the best evolution of the "Classicvania" formula and Symphony of the Night was the Metroidvania to end all Metroidvanias.

Meanwhile, the consensus about the rest of the franchise has seemed to generally become:

Castlevania 1 might as well not exist and is just for the history books; Castlevania II is a living meme and broken game; the original Gameboy trilogy never happened--and if it did, the first is broken, the second is a secret gem, and the third is boring; Castlevania III is sorta great but too old and hard to be given a lot of credit; Super Castlevania IV is overrated and majorly flawed because it gives you too many options with the whip and fools around too much with Mode 7; Bloodlines never happened; Dracula XX/Vampire's Kiss was a terrible Rondo port--nothing more, nothing less; Castlevania 64 may be the worst Castlevania game (and among the worst 3D games ever)--heck, those goofy motorcycle skeletons alone are enough to pass on it; Legacy of Darkness never happened; Circle of the Moon is really dark but might just be a good Metroidvania deep down--or maybe not; Harmony of Dissonance was convoluted but felt more like Symphony of the Night than Circle of the Moon; Aria of Sorrow might be the best Metroidvania, but then again maybe not as good as Symphony of the Night; Dawn of Sorrow was a nice visual update of Aria of Sorrow but had too many touchscreen gimmicks and wasn't as good; Portrait of Ruin was too repetitive; Order of Ecclesia added some nice challenge but no one's sure whether it had enough Metroidvania in it to be great; Lament of Innocence was a pretty good 3D Castlevania game; Curse of Darkness was a pretty good 3D Castlevania game; Lords of Shadow was a pretty good 3D Castlevania game; Mirror of Fate kinda-sorta never happened; Adventure Rebirth never happened; Lords of Shadow 2 ruined Lords of Shadow with too much stealth...

I don't agree with all of those assessments by any means--I vehemently disagree with some in particular (especially the N64 hate)--but that's where Castlevania is kind of stuck at the moment in pop culture. Rondo and SotN are among the few that are seen as relevant and truly special gems that have overcome all barriers of time and critics*. So, Konami is seemingly giving the people what they want, and also trying to distill an experience they think might be accessible and intriguing to people coming in fresh from Netflix or all the new Metroidvania-style games out there.

*To insert myself for a second, just about Rondo and SotN, I think it makes a solid, basic package, particularly considering the two stories connect, but Rondo has never quite lived up to the hype for me. I knew of its existence during the mid-90s, and felt very intrigued by all of the images and stories surrounding it, but I didn't get to play it until the PSP release. Had I played it in 1993, I might feel differently. I think it has a lot of great ideas and visuals and gameplay, and is super ambitious, but the way you are always able to transition onto alternate paths, with no one correct path to save all of the maidens, and those sometimes sharp transitions for boss-preparation rooms, makes it feel sort of "uneven" or "jerky" or "noncommittal" in its stage progression. That pulls me out of the flow of the gameplay experience more than I'd like. Still a great game, and I go back and forth about how much I like or don't like it, but it's never been one of my favorites, personally.

Meanwhile, SotN is one of those games that I've played through about twice, maybe three times, I think. It's great, especially with how it pulls you in with its atmosphere (something most of the later Metroidvanias struggle with at times), but I've always thought of the Metroidvania formula as more of a spinoff concept than a full-on evolution for Castlevania. So, it's also not one of my favorites, and it's become so iconic and familiar and influential that it's getting harder to revisit as time goes on. (Frankly, to me, there's been so many Metroidvanias within the franchise now, that it's somehow made SotN stand out a little less in some ways--seem somewhat less special--despite the fact that I think it's probably still either at the top or right near the top of the heap for the genre)

Personally, given how inaccessible it's become since it was only released on Sega Genesis, any collection really needed to have Bloodlines for me to commit to it. In an ideal world, a basic collection, in my mind--in other words, the least I would have wanted--would have had these games at minimum: Castlevania 1-4, Bloodlines, Dracula XX, Rondo of Blood, Symphony of the Night. But beggars can't be choosers, and any collection is a decent sign for the IP.

So, regardless, if rumors hold going forward, here's hoping the new game is, at the least, Dracula's Curse meets Super Castlevania IV. And I hope, whatever happens, that the Netflix aesthetic doesn't become a default game aesthetic.

If it were just a Emu-bundle, it raises a great question; What's stopping someone to just backup their copy of DXC on a cheap modded PSP and play it on a cheaper, modded PSTV?
