What strong points should the live action Castlevania movie have ?
-
Candles. Lots of them.
-
Blood. Lots and lots of blood. And the whip. Oh lord, please con't take away the whip!!!!
-
simon. no franchise based on castlevania is complete without its icon.
-
Established Belmont in the right era.
Dracula.
Vampire killer.
Monsters.
No blatant conflicting with the canon of the series.
-
hearts poppin gout of candles, gott ahave that, if it don't it aint castlevania.
-
IGA cameo.
-
Milla Jovovich?
I mean seriously people.
There is no way that anything castlevania related is going to be in this movie.
-
In Reply To #8
Well, that's ok with me if it at least has Milla
-
Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Morris saying "No problem!" every time when monsters appear. That would be awesome... "WHOAA".
Of course Chuck Norris should be there as a ninja zombie maid.
-
a belmont (preferably Simon), Death, dracula, in the correct time period, sub weapons, whip as the primary weapon, lots of Gore, the gothic scary atmosphere, other outside environments besides the castle, an intriguing story, good realistic fights with good camera angles and preferably non CGI effects.
-
In Reply To #11
I agree with this statement.
-
Good music that pays tribute to the games, not films.
-
In Reply To #13
No, a soundtrack with all the music taken directly from the games. I won't consider it Castlevania unless it has Vampire Killer, Bloody Tears, and the Beginning SOMEWHERE in it.
-
That would be lame to be watching the movie & listening to the same exact music from the games, although a few remixes here and there would be nice. Some brand new material would be excellent!
-
Straight video game midis would be horrible. Orchestral arrangements of classic CV tunes would rock. Or even go for the RoB approach, infusing some rock and jazz to the mix. No big named bands. I don't wanna see Evanescence make a song for the movie, but you know people would like it, cause, Evanescence's songs are soooooooooo good for vampire-related movies! ::)
-
I just wouldn't want the soundtrack to sound too filmscore like. I'm tired of that sound, because I've seen very little personality in it lately (save for Hans Zimmer's stuff).
I think some Dracula Battle Perfect Selection-esque hard-rock anthems are in order :D
I think the main themes of the first 5 games is a must, at least in some form (that meaning, CV 1, 2, 3, SCV4, DX:R). Overall, I would like it to have the finesse of SOTN's score, but the power of COD's.
Also, there has to be a scene where we eagerly await the drawbridge falling open and the protagonist walking unecessarily slow towards.
-
I think some Dracula Battle Perfect Selection-esque hard-rock anthems are in order :D
That's what I mean! How awesome would it be to begin with a view of Simon dashing through through forest, jumping over the closing drawbridge, and rushing through the closing doors, Alucard-style, all the while the Dracula Batle version of "Beginning" is playing?
-
Why do all of you pick the unlikely things to be in castlevania?
Here's what should be done
Simon Belmont to be played as Milla and the name Simon changed to Simone for a more femalish name.
Dracula is human in the beginning but gets injected with some vampire-like serum and develops another serum to make his monsters come to life.
Whip (Vampire Killer) replaced by a Sword called Monster Mash.
The theme of the movie will be plain anime than it is gothic.
The soundtrack to the movie won't include anything from the video game's soundtracks but will have some heavy metal/gothic bands in it.
Jason Statham will play as Bjork and Christopher Belmont at the same time.
There will be shit loads of Belmonts in one time period.
Phil Lamarr will play as dracula.
-
Phil Lamarr will play as dracula.
What's wrong with that? ;D
I vote Lavar Burton for Shaft!
-
In Reply To #20
Well
He does the voice for Vamp in msgs2 & 4.
SO I thought it would be cool if he were to get a makeover to become white pale, have a beard, and long white hair.
-
Does UPS guy make a cameo?
-
Any music straight from the game would seem too out of place. They made that mistake with FFVII: Advent Children. With the exception of the first scene with Cloud on the motorcycle, the score never "changed" along with the scenery.
It's important that music set the tone, not just be there because it sounds cool. Just getting quieter and louder but not changing the overall ambiance in a scene is boring and lazy.
Get a real music score in that's an adaptation of Castlevania music, and make it fitting for the period the movie is set in. Hard rock and guitars in a movie about the 16-1700s is horrid.
-
In Reply To #22
Well its mixed
UPS Dracula!!
-
In Reply To #24
Lol, UPS Dracula.
Oh, and Clarqa, heavy metal rock belongs everywhere.
-
I think they should hire Wojciech Kilar to do the music. He could expand on what he did for Brahm Stoker's Dracula. Although if he did a slow haunting remix of Bloody Tears I would be cool with that.
As for other things, have the action serve the story and not the other way around. If it is set in a specific time period please have the sets and props seem realistic and appropriate (no automatic multibolt cross bows a la Van Helsing).
Lastly, focus on a damn good story. You have a chance to reinvent the battle against the greatest vampire since Nosferatu so please no wolfman, or Frankenstien or insert cheesey monster here. Yes he can control legions of the undead, change into mist, wolves, bats. but also ground the film in reality, so that while Dracula has supernatural powers, have the hero be grounded in reality so that the battle is that much harder and more satisfing.
Cheers,
David
-
In Reply To #26
Well it's gotta have the Belmonts. And, no they are not grounded in reality, and are said to have super-hero like powers and strength.
Although lately it seems any CV character possesses these.
-
a movie about vampires/undead grounded in reality? that's about as dumb as trying to ground super heroes into reality...oh wait...
seriously, it's a fictional world overall, why make it realistic?
i just hope if it is simon, he's got something more akin to original design. i'd do one of those noose signature things with the redesign myself...

Just received this from one of my contacts. So... is this the real thing?
-
In Reply To #29
Yes it is real, but it is also old news!
-
In Reply To #29
Yeah that poster is like, a year or two old. It was a (very) preliminary advertisement for the movie.
-
it should just focus on a Belmont and the whip entering
and trying to survive a castle on their way to kill the
vampire.
they should bring along other vampire hunters as canon fodder so the audience sees how dangerous the castle is
(traps, monsters, bosses, puzzles, etc.)
if it totally focuses on the castle from the get go then
it may be 2 hours well spent. otherwise if it takes place
in some town and General Hospital-type drama going on before
finally going to the castle, then the castle will feel short and rushed like that other modern movie with dracula, werewolf, vampiresses/succubuses etc.
-
You mean Van Helsing? I hate that shit. What have they done to my poor poor, dear dear Professor Doctor Abraham van Helsing? Stoker would have turned over in his grave. He would have turned over again if he had seen what they did to Drac, so he'd be in his original position again.
-

What??!!! That movie was awesome!!
...I think.. my DVD started freezing half way through, so I didn't see the end. But still, who doesn't love any vampire hunting movie?
-
In Reply To #34
Did. You. Read. Bram. Stokers. Novel.
No? Then what about a nice cup of stfu?
-
In Reply To #35
No, but I saw the movie, and yes, it screws around with it totally, but at least it had some good monster-slaying action.
-
Van Hellsing was bleh. Decent movie to watch on a lazy weekend night, though, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.
A CV movie should be like Haunted Castle- cheesy and filled with 30's monster mash and Conan references, with over-the-top action. But hey, that's just me.
-
Van Hellsing was bleh. Decent movie to watch on a lazy weekend night, though, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.
To me that goes to all films other than Star Wars 4-6. :o
@13: Read it, goddamnit. How can you be a real CV fan without knowing the story about Drac? Besides, it's a really good book. I enjoyed it. I even bought it on english to read the original text.
-
I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.
Neither did I. I happened to see it at an Antique shop for a few bucks so I just bought it. I like just about any vampire movie.
Oh, and erimocard, that's not possible. I have a bit of a problem with reading: I read chapter one and then fall asleep. Was the early '90's movie accurate to the story? Because that's the one I saw.
-
I like just about any vampire movie.
How about Dracula 2000? :o

You mean the one where a bunch of thieves break into a hi-security museum and accidentally set Dracs power free? That film, and also part 2 and 3 were shown at TV yesterday and the two days before in germany on pro7. I totally watched them. Great crap. I generally watch TV for teh lol.
@13: Not really. Though almost all of the characters were in it. There were some great changes.
-

Never heard of it.
Maybe I'll have to read the book then.

Dracula 2000(Wes Craven Presents Dracula 2000, though Craven really had nothing to do with it) was stupid, yet interesting. Stupidity lies in all the modern pop culture references there to make this movie appeal to MTV-kiddies. OMG, look, a Virgin Record store!!! Look, it's Hyde from That 70s Show!!! The whole bit about Epps and his crew of theives being these wannabe badass trenchcoat wearing guys was stupid stupid STUPID! I'm so sick and tired of all these modern movies and their wannabe badasses. WTF is that? The actual Dracula aspect was a little more interesting and more CV-like by having Dracula's origins NOT being that of Vlad Tepes. Also, I kinda got a CV flash when the dude opened the bible and the pages flew out and attacked Dracula, burning him. Other than that, the New Orleans setting was bad and just yet another excuse so that we can see pointless boobs at Mardi Gras. Oh yeah, the music chewed as well! That whole scene in the beginning where it's basically just a collage of people partying during Mardi Gras and the rock music is playing(I haven't seen it in a while, though it might be Linkin Park), urgh, I never wanted to destroy my generation more than when I saw that.

Have you seen part 2 and 3 (Legacy)? There a vampire hunter shows up. And guess what weapon he wields. :3
Yeah, right, it's a whip.
-
@13: Read it, goddamnit. How can you be a real CV fan without knowing the story about Drac?
Yeah, because that book is teh OMGZ TRUE story of Dracula -- pffft. It shall be the literary standard that anything having remotely to do with Dracula shall uphold.
Fuck that. I don't need to read some stupid fairy tale bullshit to enjoy my favorite game series. I am no less a fan than you for not having read it because it has no bearing on how much fun I have with the series and it's core gameplay.
Castlevania is it's own beast; it's own representation of the myth of Vlad Tepes. I only remotely care about how the Morrisses tie in, because they were forced in the story in first place. Now I only wish that unecessary hole be plugged up and the series move on. (OOOH! Yay! We got Jonathan out of it too!)
-
In Reply To #45
W00T!! That's right, I never liked the Morrises either, buthe has a point. Castlevani is based off of Bram Stoker's novel, considering the year Dracula is supposed to be ressurrected in each century.
-
Certain things are based off the book, certain things aren't. But yes, they are different beasts.
I never liked people who became so anal over Stoker's book saying, "Oh, seeee, CV has to follow the novel's continuity because Bloodlines, so everything else is wrong!!!!!". People like that are so full of shit, it's running out of their nose. I just say it like this, if you cannot get over it and see that CV is it's OWN world, it's own history uniquely different from both Stoker's novel AND our real world history, you'll never be content with the games. I personally don't find it that hard to swallow or enjoy, be it pre-IGA CVs or IGA CVs. It seems like people that present themselves as historical scholars or literary scholars, quoting history and text, are the ones that become overly anal regarding CV's own history. Maybe because they thought that their knowledge would benefit in discussion, but they discovered that it's not as helpful as they thought it would be.
-
Lulz. Like I said the book would have anything to do with Castlevania's story. And I _am_ fairly content with the series too. Unlike all those "anime-style makes pork bad game lulz"-retards. And what is your problem anyway? It's a book about Dracula. How could you not like it? So why don't you read it? And why do you say it's fairytale bullshit if you haven't even read it?
And who THE FUCK cares about Jonathan FUCKING Morris anyway? xDp

Meh. There's far cuter and more interesting females than Charolotte in Castlevania: Sypha, Yoko, Julia, Carrie, Maria, Shanoa (from what I can tell)... Just like Jonathan, she feels forced, cuz she was, so that little girls would play Castelvania.
Sha has some cool magicks at least.

Charlotte

Yeah, I noticed that too.
Juste is awesome! Had Sypha been a guy, Castlevania wouldn't have existed. Then again, there's also the possibility that they adopted...
-
Juste had that funky aura to him, it just makes it look like there are 5 duplicates of him running around, instead of the desired look.

And he shouts something like "let's kick!" when you use certain spells.

I'll agree his box art was pretty slick (if a little too effeminate, of course). Too bad every other picture of him blew :P
And yeah his sprites.... just... no.

That's just not... wait. It actually IS true.

I'm going to have to agree here. His front box art picture for Harmony is pretty awesome...
...but his sprites, his character, etc. they're kinda not all that alright.
As for Jonathan and Charlotte.... Charlotte seems like a Hermoine annoyance chick. Yeah you wanna have her but she's really not that great otherwise.
They should've made her 2 years older and given her glasses and a real weapon instead of a Book... and made the game such that you could conceivably play as her throughout the entire game instead of having her Sidekick the blonde ditz that is Jonathan.
HOW is that guy the son of John Morris!? John had NO LINES OF DIALOGUE and he kicked at least 10x the amount of ass that Jonathan did.
-
John had NO LINES OF DIALOGUE and he kicked at least 10x the amount of ass that Jonathan did.
10 times 0 is still 0. :P
but yeah, he must have been adopted or something. even juste being the grandson of simon wasn't such a disgrace to the bloodline of his ancestors.

Well played, Serio... Well played indeed.
:P
Yeah I think Juste's game needs revamping.
List of games that need revamping:
-Vampire Killer-
-Simon's Quest-
-Dracula's Curse-
-Harmony of Dissonance-
-All 3 Gameboy Titles-
Back to Focus Points though (the topic itself), I think on Live Action there needs to be platforming perils. The gears in the clocktower need to look like they can grind the hero into giblets. Spike platforms and things that objects can get caught in would be good (like the big grinding stone in Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom).
There also needs to be some beauty thrown in. Lots of beautiful stained-glass windows in the Chapel, etc.
-

HOD sucks for the most part.
I never could understand the hate here behind HoD, given that it blew away its predeccesor. Funnier still, given how Juste is the only Belmont able to cast spells. I'd say CotM needs more revamping, given the tedious grinding for those cards and the terrible backgrounds/ level design. And some more music to it; I wasn't impressed with the bulk of the remixes, especially after hearing them loop for about ten minutes or so. Oh well.
While beautifully designed sets would be a god-send, I have a feeling Paul Anderson would only want to focus on SOME PRETTY EXTREME BATTLES set in a typical castle.
-
In Reply to everyone who hates HoD
How could you hate it??? I liked it for the most part. Could've been better. At least its not Haunted Castle...
-
I never could understand the hate here behind HoD, given that it blew away its predeccesor.
Nor can I understand why the Chapel of Resonnance loves it so much. :P It really isn't that good of a Castlevania at all. Droning un-hummable music (awful at times); Boring, uninteresting characters; HORRIBLE -- ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS -- sprites, bright neon palette comes off as tacky, lackluster difficulty, mostly boring, ugly level designs (that get repeated), as too much reuse of same tiles, and you can't even find the secret walls until near the end of the game.
What was good was the dissonant map, chapel stage and entrance hall; the dash mechanics and the resurgence of the item-crashes. But it wasn't enough to overcome the lack of finesse in the art, music, story, presentation and pacing. Although they did at least attempt segmneted sprites again.
You could write it off as IGA's inexperience with the GBA at the time. Fine. That doesn't change the fact it isn't all that fun to play.
I'll give you the fact that COTM had some boring backgrounds too, (I think the chapel is great though), but the difficulty kept things interesting, and because of it, the cards do become a necessary upgrade to advance. The castle layout was way more realistic and there was may more interesting platforming.
Also Natahn's run mechanics.... O_o
The music, while mostly remixes, was good, and was recorded at a much higher-fidelity than even AOS. It could use some more fresh blood, but we did get some awesome originals like "Awakening" and "Proof of Blood".
And while the sprites were smaller, they were much more carefully made.
-

Surprisingly, I disagree with all of that.

Actually, a lot of members over there don't like it. That said, the music was dissonant- not everybody's cup of tea for sure. But to write off Successor of Fate, Epilogue 1, and Chapel of Dissonance as boring is...interesting indeed. Especially when quality is judged as to whether you can hum it or not.
The palette was meant to be played on a non-backlit screen- a definite improvement on its drab predessecoor. And as bright as it was, it showcased backgrounds that blew away CotM's wallpapery backgrounds and foregrounds- the sheer level of detail in the Entrance Hall, Room of Illusions, and the Skeleton Cave (with its H.R. Giger influences and countless references to CV's past) could even outshine that of AoS. The difficulty level complaint is interesting, especially when the the oft-loved SotN was even easier with the expection of the Galamoth boss fight. The Simon Wraiths and Jumping Bone Pillars would wittle down your health in only a few hits, and they peppered the Shrine of the Apostates B.
What is incredible is the assertion that HoD suffers from boring, repetitive level design- from my experience and going by other reviews, HoD is notorious for having a chaotic, unpredictable layout. CotM, on the other hand, not only had the worst backgrounds that CVIII even trumps, it had the most predictable layout.
-
Haunted Castle's so cheap though. Not surprising, seeing as how it's am arcade game. But doesn't make for very comforatble casual play.
Read: inaccessible.

what!? Circle of the moon is one of the best if not the best castlevania post SOTN. Antraxx review is spot on and I wholeheartedly agree, the game was too long and boring with reused bosses and backgrounds for no apparant reason. While I still find it fun Cotm completely trumps it as well as AoS.
-

I disagree. Circle of the Moon is fun to play, but it can border on frustrating especially when one needs to grind levels and look for cards. One does not know what these cards will do, nor from which monsters to get them from. >.< There are also some drab backgrounds and the same music for different areas.
Visually, AoS (and imo, HoD) is better. Also plotwise.
-
circle on the fighter mode is how the game should've been strength wise. you can get through it without much grinding, just with skill because your attack power levels up quicker than all other modes.

lolwut? Did you not look at CotM's backgrounds? Each area's backgrounds are exactly the same thing; the Catacombs used about three; dirt wall, dirt wall with treasure, and tombstones. The main hall was even worse, opting for just the same arches. There was absolutely no diversity or detail in its backgrounds or foregrounds for that matter. Areas like the eternal corridor are akin to that of a 2D CoD: its just the exact same hallway and enemies, looping for about three times before you move on.
Again, there is no true platforming like that of CV1. It's just leaping back and forth from shelves. You're jumping a lot, but that does not equal masterful platforming at all.
The grinding somehow manages to be even more tedious than DoS, what with having to randomly kill every enemy several times over just to see if it would drop a card, much less anything else of value.
When did HoD recycle bosses? I'm not sure if you mean the CVIII throwbacks (Skull Knight, Cyclops) or if you're confused about something.
-

True.. CotM's gameplay, while slightly unbalanced, is good. [It's possible for a skillful player to get through it without grinding, but I am not one of them :P] I still think AoS and HoD beat it because the latter two don't give the player a drab experience and they are also great games in their own right..
Admittedly, HoD was a little too easy, even for me.
-
I definitely think there should be a build up towards the castle, and the scenes prior take the audience through the countryside.
-
In my opinion, in terms of the soundtrack, it must have music that is both old and new.
For example, new music that feels right at home in Castlevania (like Geoffrey Gunn's work), and straight up rearrangements of classic themes.
If it could pull that off in the music department like Silent Hill did with its soundtrack (and I was indeed amazed by the use of the actual music from the series), then it would be an excellent musical score.
-
Wait..what the fuck is Castlevania?

It's hard but not that bad. I never had to just sit and grind. once you get the bosses patterns down it ain't that bad and you can take most of them down w/out taking too many hits. (except the dual dragons (mother fuckers) ;D
When did HoD recycle bosses? I'm not sure if you mean the CVIII throwbacks (Skull Knight, Cyclops) or if you're confused about something.
Well the minotaur boss for on was used multiple times as far as in game boss recycling goes, I meant that just about every boss was from another game there were no true HOD bosses except Dracula's second easy breezy form.
-
I'm kind of worried about this actually. I don't think the essence of the series will be captured at all.
But to answer your question Simon, you just have to...and yes although I'm a girl Milla would be good too.
I hope they get a good gothic feel to it though , and not cheesey action flick like the Hulk or something.

Harmony of Dissonance had some great boss fights, and even though there were a few repeats, they did an excellent job making them so they were more original. Besides, the game had so many bosses, it didn't really matter if some were already used! The giant bat was necessary for the sake of all things Castlevania, the skull knight was awesome and a lot of fun and the minotaur was good too, though I hate really really big bosses! Luckily, it wasn't nearly as big as Dawn of Sorrow's Menace. That thing was wicked annoying! Possibly my least favorite Castlevania boss ever! However, fighting Soma in that game was very fun, and I enjoyed it a lot, even though he was my favorite character. Anyway, back on topic, Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance has my favorite bosses and my favorite boss rush mode, especially using Simon Belmont as a character. My record is like 5 minutes 7 seconds or somthing like that. (too lazy to check the exact record)
