Title: Dracula’s generals
Post by: The Puritan on November 10, 2020, 12:10:35 AM
I was thinking of the original five Castlevania bosses before Dracula and their reappearances throughout the saga. They were notably the guardians of Dracula’s relics in SOTN, and the four who weren’t Death were the seals on Brauners’s painting in POR (though with the Werewolf in place of the Giant Bat).

Given their seeming importance, could they be Dracula’s generals in-universe? And is it possible that they each represent a different area of his dominion as the Demon King? Something like:

Death- Demons and ethereal beings
The Creature (or his maker): Artificial life
The Mummy (Akmodan II?): The undead
Medusa: Ancient forgotten monsters

Not sure about the Giant Bat. Maybe he’s less a general than Dracula’s favorite pet and the real fifth general is POR’s Werewolf, who could represent the werebeasts and round out the Universal Monsters references while he’s at it.

I'd say almost all the bosses in CV have high-tier command over the monsters of their said areas. Minus the ones that aren't humanoid, creatures like the twin serpents, Phantom bat, etc. It would make sense for Dracula to have multiple commanders (Generals) under his direct authority to help organize his armies and bring about a quicker victory. Whilst other bosses are simply watchdogs or guardians of areas they are stationed at.

Slogra and Gaibon are clearly the Scratch and Grounder to Dracula's Robotnik

This comment, goddamn. I hate it, but I love it, too.

On a more serious note, I do believe that the bosses in the games generally (no pun intended) have some form of authority over some areas, at Dracula's pleasure, of course. This is outright stated with some characters to be the case, like with Orlok. However, more monstrous bosses are more likely placed as guardians, rather than generals, like Beelzebub or Legion.

Not sure if mentioned, but they're also the mini bosses before Shaft in RoB too.
