It's AWESOME!
Seriously, it's like the 1990s again.  There are so many hidden goodies in each stage!  However, I'm not fond of three things so far:

1. DK's physics when he does a roll+jump.  It's so fast and has such a long trajectory that it's very difficult to aim and time.
2. DK is no longer invincible to enemies while in the middle of a stomp somersault.  In the original games, when DK/Diddy/Dixie/Kiddy would jump on an enemy, the propelled 'somersault jump' after the stomp had a very forgiving hitbox and some invincibility from certain directions.  In this game, you're only allowed to stomp the enemy directly under you.  Because of this, I'll be in the middle of a stomp session and one enemy will be juuuuust a bit too high and "Ooh!" DK gets hit. :\
3. Waggle!  I despise having to 'shake' the controller to do the roll (but I do like using it to score extra points when at the goal).  I don't like that there was no Classic Controller scheme, and am restricted either to analognunchuck/wiimote, or controller sideways.  There was no reason to do it that way when Nintendo has the extra buttons of those other peripherals.

Aside from these, the game is awesome.  The bonus stages are a treat, the locales are beautiful, the enemies are new and weird (though I miiiiiiisssss the Kremlings... ohhhh where have they gooooone!?!?) and the animations are nice and fluid.

Man Donkey Kong Country practically introduced me to videogames!
The very first console that my family owned was a SNES with both DKC 1 & 2 and almost everyone in my family loved playing it! I positively can't wait till I have enough money to pick this one up.

Out of curiosity, aside from Donkey & Diddy do any other familar Kongs make an appearance like say Funky or Cranky? Funky was my absolute favourite non playable character when I was younger.

Cranky runs the item shop.
I haven't bumped into other Kongs yet.  You no longer have to travel using Funky since there's a World Select, similar to New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
In fact, the stage map progression looks strikingly similar to that game.  In its defense, the 'path to a circular point' was DKC's first.

It's interesting to note that Funky Kong is actually the same ape from that surfing game that came out back in the day. T&C Surf Designs I believe.

I love the challenge level in this game.  I'm cursing at the screen, but really cursing at myself for not spotting an item when it's too late, or when I miss a jump.
I also love the return of some of the classic DKC1 music, especially the dangerous Mine Cart Carnage music.

The game IS quite difficult at times --and yes the motion controls for the DK's roll are part of the reason.  And then there's quite a few ill-placed Puzzle Pieces, KONG Letters, and Bannana Coins.  I've wasted quite a few balloons on those kind of unnecessary risks.  All part of the fun, right?  ;-)  I'm doing mostly 2 player gameplay with my girls --and that curbs the difficulty a bit.  REALLY  BIG HELP in those bonus rooms where you need to grab all the bananas before time runs out.  I miss switching between Donkey and Diddy on-the-fly --from Rare's one player game...  But then, the extra Hearts DK gets when he piggy-backs Diddy is an excellent trade-off.  Most of the remixing is very well done, but Aquatic Ambience Returns just didn't hit the right notes for me.  :-/

You don't actually hear the classic "Aquatic Ambience" until the 2nd loop or so, but it is there in a few notes.  But yeah it's not quite like the original.  Still nice though.

That is exactly what I said when I first played it.
It definitely rocks it hard. I love, love, love the Sunset stage with the silhouettes! ^_^
