Castlevania 64 Castle Center metal pillar?

I am playing through Castlevania 64 again, and I've gotten to the Castle Center stage.  Right near the beginning, if you turn down the first corridor, there is a green metal pillar on the left wall, and if you "examine" it, it says "A metal pillar. It seems to be hollow..."

Is this hinting at a secret of some sort, or is it just another one of the game's odd descriptions of things meant to boggle the mind?

It's the tube that houses the machinery/mechanical part that moves the magical elevator in the floor above.
It's there because that's the same floor the giant Crystal that generates the energy to power the elevator is located.

Why it can be examined, however?  I don't know.  Probably just one of those little details the game has.
