CV2 - Did Nintendo screw up the endings?

After having made CV2 Revamped twice, I noticed something. The endings don't make sense. I made the endings based on the Nintendo version. If Simon didn't survive his fatal wounds, why is he kneeling before the grave? Also, if Simon is victorious, why is the grave by itself?
Please discuss.

You got the wrong ending.

If you get the correct ending you will see he cleansed himself of the curse in which Dracula bestowed upon him in CV1.

@MQ here are all 3 alternate endings. Many people i knew that beat the game didnt' know about teh middle ending. Well anyways here's what i dug up:

ending 1(you defeat drac and defeat curse, translvania people cured and happy forever because drac's blood and sweat magically rejuvinate land) -he also seems to resurrect himself at the end if you wait long enough
Castlevania 2 - Dracula + Best ending

ending 2(drac dies but you die for obvious reasons, curse gone from people but you fail)
Castlevania 2 - Dracula + Bad (Middle) ending

ending 3(you beat drac and save transylvania and defeat curse(unclear if you die or live but you are remembered)
Castlevania 2 - Dracula + Worst ending

Taking Edward Scissorhands to a whole new level!

I've only seen ending 3 happen when you use a password to help finish the game, rather then playing the game straight through from beginning to end. I guess they didn't want you to cheat your way through.

The other two endings are based on time i.e. How long it takes you to finish the game in a single play-through. Since I've played CV2 to death I can always guarantee I'll get the best ending.

I used to kill myself on purpose after Rover Mansion, to get a password, in order to skip backtracking all the way to Jova.
I don't know if this changes the ending, but it certainly shaves a ton of time! xD
It's been quite a long time since I last played original Simon's Quest.

Metroidquest raises a very fine point, though:  The 'worst' ending actually seems like kind of a great ending, while the 'best' ending is kinda... kinda 'what the hell, he comes back!?!?' and stuff.
The middle ending ends up 'sounding' the worst.

By the way, I don't know if you guys noticed, but the grave used in Simon's Quest is exactly the same grave (complete with the same design patterns and dracura/dracula letters) as the grave in Super Castlevania IV.

When I was younger, I used to think that Super Castlevania IV happened immediately after Simon's Quest because of this.  I beat CV2, saw the "hand" ending happen, then figured "oh they changed it a little to a better resurrection" when CV4 came out, what with lightning striking the grave and a bat soul emerging from it in the introductory cutscene.

...ohhh I was so young...

Exactly, Jorge. It's very confusing. Does someone have a direct Japanese translation of the endings? I wonder if the person programming the english got his notes all shuffled up from the English translator.

Here's a good place to start:

It's in Japanese, but it has the entire script of D2 for the FDS.

I always thought that the 'best' ending was considered to be good because it implied sequels.

Same here  :) I wanna see a CV 2 sequel. But like Jorge pointed out the grave of CV2 and SCV4 are virtually identical so before I read the Japanese script I had always assumed the SCV4 was the continuation of Simon's Quest. And personally SCV4 would have made a truly and very worthy sequel.

Castlevania2             | -the ultimate Simon trilogy.

yes, the american Canon at that time implied Castlevania IV was a sequel.
