I used to kill myself on purpose after Rover Mansion, to get a password, in order to skip backtracking all the way to Jova.
I don't know if this changes the ending, but it certainly shaves a ton of time! xD
It's been quite a long time since I last played original Simon's Quest.
Metroidquest raises a very fine point, though: The 'worst' ending actually seems like kind of a great ending, while the 'best' ending is kinda... kinda 'what the hell, he comes back!?!?' and stuff.
The middle ending ends up 'sounding' the worst.
By the way, I don't know if you guys noticed, but the grave used in Simon's Quest is exactly the same grave (complete with the same design patterns and dracura/dracula letters) as the grave in Super Castlevania IV.
When I was younger, I used to think that Super Castlevania IV happened immediately after Simon's Quest because of this. I beat CV2, saw the "hand" ending happen, then figured "oh they changed it a little to a better resurrection" when CV4 came out, what with lightning striking the grave and a bat soul emerging from it in the introductory cutscene.
...ohhh I was so young...
