While looking through the sprites in Castlevania III, I found a couple sprites for candles and lanterns with wisps of smoke rather than flames. I figured that was the sprite the candle becomes when you hit it with your whip, but when I booted up CV3 and watched the sprite animations at very slow speed, the candle went immediately from lit-candle to a spark. There was no smoky candle. And I could have sworn I saw a sprite for a lantern (in the ghost ship) with a snuffed-out flame to.

Anyone have any ideas where these go in the game?

Probably dummied out.  My guess is that there was an issue with sprite limits and flickering, so leaving extinguished candle husks was not an option.

Maybe they wanted to try out something new that would have differentiated it from CV1, but chose not to in the end.

Its probably just an unused sprite, many video games leave those in.

It looks just like a candle, but with a little black squiggle where the fire should be. It's on my other comp, which isn't near my router... My long CAT5 broke so i threw it out rather than just fixing it. :/

Going by the sound of it... a black squiggle over a candle to show that its extinguished probably wouldn't have look right in my mind against some of the backgrounds in CVIII. Maybe thats why they were left out in the first place.
I now Prossess a what?

The smoke could've been a semi-light gray and it would have worked in areas that contain mostly black backgrounds. In other areas that have a much lighter palette in the background then they could go fore the black smoke effect.

There is no grey in the candle palette.

It didn't look like animated smoke either. Unless they did a sprite mirror. But then I think they would have had to mirror the candle part too. There was just one frame and one frame only. It was near the animated candles but still separate from them.

And like I said, there's a lantern part too. Nowhere near the rest of the lanterns. I'll copy the ROM part into PSP and upload it now. BRB...

Other sprites I was wondering about, by the way:
A half-dagger. It's a dagger, but without the blade. It's even facing the wrong way.
(had more, but realized they were the passwords  ;D )

OK, the lantern isn't an issue. I didn't realize there were 3 frames for the lanterns. I just assumed it was 2 frames like the candle and torch. I played CV3 to the boat just now and sure enough there were 3 frames of animation for them. So really, there are just two unknown sprites now... so far.

EDIT: YAY! On my other comp now! OK, here are the two sprites in question:

The Half-dagger, I think, is the flying dagger at the precise moment it hits the Cyclops when the Thunder is about to hit him.

I'm guessing you know about the Thunder/Cyclops easter egg, right?
