Radiant Silvergun XBLA.....Yea or Nay?

Radiant Silvergun is, from the info I've gathered, coming to XBLA on Spetember 11th or 12th.

Now, I happen to have a love/hate relationship with shmups (shoot-em-ups). I used to be really good at the Gradius series as a kid. Since them though, most shmups whup up on my ass something fierce.

For example. I love Ikaruga. Great game. But I absolutely suck at it. I can get to the end of level 4 or 5, and that's it. Wish I could do better, but I simply lack the reflexes it takes to dodge 1000 bullets at once. I need a bit more time to plan my movements I suppose.

Which brings me to Radiant Silvergun. A game which is the spiritual progenitor or Ikaruga (made by the same team), and in the opinion of many a die-hard shmup fan, is the best shooter EVAR!!

I kinda suck at Ikargua though, and don't wanna pay $15 for a game that will ultimately be unbeatable to me because I lack 1/4-second reflexes. So, has anyone here played both game? If so, is Radiant Silvergun more forgiving, or is it the same, or even harder?

Are they really going to charge $15 for it?   :o

I haven't played Radiant Silvergun, so I really can't answer your question.  But I'll be picking it up even though I suck balls at Ikaruga and most shmups.  I still love the genre, and Radiant Silvergun is such a legend that I have to give it a try.

$15 is what I've read. I love shmups too, just wish I didn't generally suck at them.

I haven't played Radiant Silvergun but to my understanding it is very unlike Ikaruga, certainly featuring no bullet absorption mechanic and generally being less minimalistic with its arsenal, which sounds just dandy to me. Speaking of, it has a pretty boss Hitoshi Sakimoto score, so it's worth it for that at least.

First off, for those who think $15 is too much, type Radiant Silvergun into an Ebay search. Yeah...

To answer OP, I finished Ikaruga after many tries. Very rewarding experience if you can master the gameplay. That said, I also played Radiant Silvergun, and I cannot finish the first level (Saturn edition). They throw like seven bosses as you, in a row. It's ridiculous. But it's the most fun I had failing hard at a video game ever. You get 7 different types of guns from the get go (mapped to the Saturn controller, this is heaven).

I mean, look at it. LOOK AT IT!!

Now I know what you're thinking. Yes, this game will kick your ass. But you'll have so much fun as it does. I'm not even a die-hard shmup fan, but this game just plain rocks.

No thanks... It looked cool when I looked it up... ironically 2 days ago because I was looking for games like Tyrian, and that lead me to Radiant Silvergun and one of my personal favs, Raptor.

But it, for some reason doesn't really interest me that much. And people who would pay that much for a game are crazy so ...... those people are foolish anyway.

I still haven't decided. I'll have to play the demo for a bit. After several playthroughs, if I can't get past the first level w/o getting my ass handed to me constantly, I might get it. I just worry that the latter levels will be impossible.

Also, I'm kinda holding out for Guardian Heroes.

only so much $ to go around.

I bought it the day it came out. Fifteen bucks is a steal considering you can't seem to get an actual mint copy for Saturn for under $180, usually at least $200. I hope more people buy it to help encourage more releases like this. I'll always definitely be getting Guardian Heroes, which I happen to have for Saturn. If people don't buy this stuff they prob will stop putting it out. Live Arcade is pretty sweet. The game itself is really hard! But fun and really cool, so you keep coming back. I think I played about 3 hours the day I got it and yeah, pretty much stuck on what feels like the first level still! If you play story mode and save after each play you level up your weapons so the enemies are at least easier to kill. Also I believe every hour you play adds an extra life to get you a little further. Though it's still brutal and I will be very proud of myself if I ever beat it. I love the genre but it kicks my ass. Even if I never beat the game, it was more than worth the price of $15.00. As for Ikaruga, I got okay at it a long time ago (I have it for Dreamcast) but now I get raped every time I try and can't seem to get past level 2. Then again when I was younger I sat right in front of a 20" TV. Now I sit a dozen feet away from an HDTV, perhaps I should scoot up for the shooters. Guwange is a great shooter on Live Arcade also, with a very cool style. At lease I can beat it using a bunch of continues... This almost didn't happen, I think Treasure was persuaded by Microsoft. Sometimes Microsoft is cool!

Well, that's great news!

I was really on the fence about this one, but apparently, after 7 hours of gameplay, you open up FREE PLAY, so even those who completely suck can still beat the game with some persistence.

Honestly, that was my biggest concern. SWEET!! Thanks for the info  :D

Thanks for the info about Free Play! I like to think I don't suck but that this game is just hard, very hard. I've been playing games nearly 20 years and hell some just don't become easy. I guess it's a shitty way to grade myself but I generally beat all of my real life pals at games and always have. So I feel like I'm better than average. It's hard to imagine somebody coming into a game like Radiant Silvergun and beating it quick. I can't imagine how much I'd have to spend to beat the arcade version.

Finally bought this for my b-day, and WOW what a game! I know that I'll never master it, but at least I can beat it.

Not a fan of RSG (or Ikaruga, love shmups to death though), but this is good for fans who can't afford a real Saturn copy of said game.
