how about having more save points, but the save points don't restore your life unless you die and are respawned next to them? and what about there being some sort of disadvantage for dying, like in Demon's Souls where the enemies get harder to kill when you die?

Instant death mechanics are acceptable as long as they are avoidable, spikes, pits, sinking away, lava are all fair game. As long as you make it obvious for the player to spot these hazards it shouldn't be a problem.
