I never mind playing as female protagonists. Hell, I think one of the first original characters I've created back in middle school was a female heroine(a swordswoman that was taught to defend herself by her father, former Captain of her nations Royal Guard) who was in no way to be a "fanservice" type character, designs-wise. As someone else noted, too, I have a female character in Bloodborne. To me, it really doesn't matter and I don't get turned off from a game if a main character not my own gender.
Though, regarding a problem within the industry, I think it's more something that should be addressed "behind the scenes" rather than within games. I've heard horror stories about female devs that had to deal with shit from male devs. That shouldn't even be a problem, but it is. Maybe the focus of this fight should be aimed towards the "behind the scenes" side. Games are considered an art, and devs are in their right to make games as THEY see fit, but how many creative minds are being stifled from doing so because they happen to be "women"? That is a BIG problem, IMO. We need more female developers and "boys club" mentality within the studios. Somewhat related, I saw a story on the news a month back regarding a study done regarding drama in the workplace, and how teams free of drama and workplace bullying provided more efficient and quality work than those bogged down by emotion-hurting crap. Maybe bosses/managers gotta be on top regarding this sort of thing, and crack down on assholes. No mercy for the wicked, and no sympathy for assholes.
