One thing I adore about the gameplay of Bloodborne, including the controls, is that it reminds me so much of what Konami did with certain Castevania games, particularly the original and Rondo of Blood. There's a sense of strategy to the fighting: get in, do some whipping, pull back, dodge, etc. Except in FromSoftware's games, there are so many varieties of enemy moves, especially when it comes to bosses, that it's almost impossible to nail down a pattern, as often a boss will surprise you with a move you've never seen before; there's several instances in Bloodborne where I was on my fifth or sixth try to defeat a boss and they totally freaked me out with something new that's usually an instakill. I love that these games keep you on your feet and focused. It totally brings out some kind of addiction response to keep going back and conquer the enemy.
That coupled with the level of exploration, discovery, and level design brings me back to what made games so special on the NES and SNES. I like a good easygoing experience also, but I love that these games challenge me and kick my ass, until I'm strong enough to kick back.
