The only one I can remember not being able to beat fair and square is Battletoads.
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

I can see why some people would have problems with Faxanadu. The controls are kinda awkward for example. But I love the game anyway. I especially love how every piece of armor and weapon is visable on your character (I completely forgive him for starting the game in his underwear, lol.) The final dungeon is confusing though, but the last boss is a piece of cake  8)

Other games that deserve to be in this thread:
Mission Impossible
Kinda similar to Metal Gear but not quite. There are some incredibly frustrating levels in it. I could never beat it. The music was fantastic though!

Rush'n'Attack
Not having a lifebar in a game like this is quite insane. It worked in Contra though, and this game is arguably easier. But it's still a pain to go through if you don't know what you're doing. I did finish it after a few years.

Ghosts N Goblins (arcade version is still far harder)
P.O.W.

I never had any problems with POW. *shrug*

Ghosts n Goblins on the other hand...holy SHIT those games are hard! I'm playing Ultimate on the PSP right now, and I started out on Normal mode but decided Novice was better. And Novice is STILL really hard.  :P Great game though, kinda reminds me of DXC in a way.

I used to own Bayou Billy back in the day, beat it constantly, often in 1 credit. It's Japanese counterpart, Mad City is easier, after not playing Bayou Billy for a number of years, passed that one in 1 credit as well.

Either my skills returned, or Mad City is just that easy.

Yeah Bayou Billy was fun used to play that all the time. I always hated those damn driving parts though, always gave me the most trouble. i can remember the first time I finally passed those sons of bitches I was extatic. (till i got to the main boss that is)

I beat Friday the 13th. It wasn't all that hard. But it just repeats itself over and over again.

trick to that game is to hunt jason down with the pitchfork or the fire on day 3 wait until he goes after a counselor get in front of that cabin and wait for him to kill him/her then start walking right, you'll encounter him, just unload and when he runs away follow him real fuckin' fast and he'll fight with you again, jus keep repeating until he's dead. Fighting him in a cabin on day 3 is impossible with the pitchfork because it's too slow and insanely hard with the fire, it requires perfect timing right after he runs from the right of the screen and does his double attack.

I never had any problems with either Batman or Bionic Commando.

Yeah I found those games pretty easy too once you figured out all the little tricks to passing the jumping parts and conserved your ammo.

And I dunno about you, but Zelda II is one of the hardest games I've played on the NES.

the trick to zelda 2 is to know where the game hides the red potions in the dungeons. Also be sure and level up before you go into each subsequent dungeon and just stay next to a town so if you get too damaged you can fuck a prostitute and get full health again. It's also essential to talk to everybody and get all the magic and heart containers. If you just take your time and think the different situations that arise through I found it really quite easy. Except dungeon 7 but you get infinite tries there.

They were supposed to remake it for the GBA but that never happened.

The reason I would say Boy and His Blob is not hard though is that it's so fucking short.

Yeah Ice Climbers controls are just plain dumb. the game is pretty fun but the horrid controls take alot out of it.

I loved Bayou Billy too. Never beat it though, cuz those last two guys would always kill me before I could finish them off. And only one of them took damage if I remember right.

I used to just creep pretty slow on the driving parts, at least on the first one. The rocks used to own me. >_<

yeah the rocks in the road suck. the levels are so long, I can remember eating an entire bag of chips waiting for them to finish.
