Can you just imagine how long the stairs in the chapel would take to climb if they kept the stair walking in SotN?
What a horrible night to have a curse!

I miss accidentally dropping to my death for failure to use the stairs properly. Has this already been said?

I think adding bottomless pits in tandem with stair climbing would make for a nice change in level design and difficulty for a metroidvania.

I'd love to see a Castleroid designed somewhat more like a classicvania, with levels that connect into different rooms or stack on top of each other in some places.

Obviously there'd be a little less item collecting because backtracking would be a pain, that or some clever level design to avoid backtracking without compromising what items you collected and where.. perhaps the gryffon wing would be left out or an item you obtained later though... dont want those bottomless pits there just to look nice you know.

This is why I think PoR especially missed a great opportunity: Imagine if the portrait levels were to have played out in classic, linear, bottomless-pits CV formula.  It would have totally gelled because the main castle retains the Castletroid mechanics, while the portrait levels feel like separate entities (which they should, because they are).

Not unlike Mario 64, if you would die in these paintings, you'd be kicked out of it and have to start over.

Woulda made that game way more interesting and challenging.

There would of course have to be multiple paths and bosses, like in Rondo  ;D
