I find Gamespot's review funny because their review of Legacy of Darkness was actually pretty positive.
But it seems like their complaints boil down to "I don't know how to do the platforming" and "It borrows too much from other games". Did Arkham Asylum not borrow from beat-em-ups of yesteryear like Final Fight? Did Gears of War not borrow from Resident Evil 4? He complains about the combat being too much like God of War, but that game borrows heavily from Rygar and - gasp! - Lament of Innocence. The elements LoS draws from other games are very much evolutions of things started by older Castlevanias - the whip combat, platforming, screen filling bosses (though many games had those). If it does these things well, what's the problem?
And to me, Lords' combat looks very distinct. It seems much more organized and strategic than God of War's; I can start to see Cox's inspiration from Street Fighter. It looks like you have to judge how your whip connects and from what distance to not get yourself swarmed by undead jerks. Again, a common element started by old Castlevania.
