Vagrant Story

For a Square half-RPG, this game is pretty dang hardcore.

Been destroying it with the savestates though :(  Yeah, I know, I'd like to see some more enemy attacks, but I also can't really spend the time playing it 'properly.'  Getting a kick out of it all the same, good story and locations.

You bring me back good memories!!!!! One of all time favorite games for my shelf!!!! It's a shame they never made a sequel or prequel of the game.... :( It's game play mechanics are so deep.......i love every aspect of this game!!!!!

Vagrant Story was really not my cup of tea.  ??? I haven't played it in many years but I remember being frustrated most of the time. I shall give it another try someday, maybe I was too young and ignorant back in the day...

This is one of the coolest uderrated games Square ever put out! I too saw it in an old video game magazine and rushed out to buy it. I think I got stuck on the Golem boss and stopped playing it..

Definitely... I remember the first time... I didn't like it too much, but i found it interesting so I never go far. But the second time through I got to 80% before I stopped and that's because I have no idea where it went.

Yeah that's also one of my favorite Square games on PSX1. The atmosphere and the music are incredible. But the game is also really really hard and very complex. I've attempted it three times and still haven't beat it. It's really an underrated gem.

It is a pretty good game. I remember when I first discovered it's connection to FFT and Tactics Ogre. That just made it like 1000% cooler for me.

Trivia
The logo of Vagrant Story II

    * The game was originally meant to feature a two-player option. Fans generally assume that Callo would have been the second playable character.
    * A sequel titled Vagrant Story II was revealed at some point before 2003, although the game was apparently scrapped. It was in development by Nintendo for the Nintendo GameCube, with Yoshitaka Amano as the character designer. Ashley was stated to make a reappearance

Damn, I never heard about that... I guess its because I got into it late.

But yeah, I adore VS. Its honestly the last Square game I can say I love.

Whoooaaa, thread revival, and for no other reason than to be a negative nancy. ;)

This game looked badass. My brother owns it and I'd watch him play it when it came out. I tried my hand at it and totally got whupped. I should revisit it sometime, see if I can get good at it.

The only thing about Vagrant Story that could be improved (somewhat) is possibly the battle engine...it's still an RPG.  The materials and affinities system is rather mind-boggling, and definitely hard to get to grips with, but the ideas are awesome.  It has a MUCH better idea behind the system - time your attacks to keep a combo going, and in theory it's actually possible to kill a boss by chaining it to death without ever letting it attack - than most other RPGs.  Even though I'm a pretty dedicated FPSer / shooting games-er, it feels just fine to me.  Square knew what they were doing here, definitely.

I'm always a bit stuck on artstyle, and for me this is, looks-wise, just about the dream PlayStation game.  Everything looks awesome in this game, and the somewhat surreal low-rez way the PlayStation renders things fits just fine.  Compare the interior of any shop in Vagrant Story to, say, the MSPaint textures of Syphon Filter (especially the Washington D.C. downtown level...) and you'll be amazed how far your average Western-developed game has been forced to come in terms of graphics.  You really get a sense of what the place seems to be like, too.

Well, being an RPG, i don't believe is something bad.......but that's my opinion. Anyway, i still believe this one to be one of the best games that Squaresoft has ever made and i'm still dreaming that one day we are going to get a sequel or prequel or even better, a remastered version of the old one, for one of the new generation home consoles!!!

(Yes i know that none of the above is going to happen, but i love to dream.......you see, i'm just a dreamer........ :P)

Nothing wrong with dreaming that, man.  Sometimes you wait and stuff happens, like with the remastered DS version of FFIV.
