Simon's Quest NEO

Simon: There is no steak... only stakes...
Flea man 1: Miiiiiister Belmont.
Simon: Agent Flea.
Flea man 2: In the flesh.
Simon cracks whip and prepares for battle.

No but seriously.

I wish to enlist the help of a skilled Programmer regarding a remix of Simon's Quest.

Upon play through of the game I've found that there are a number of errors and problems with the game, and honestly, I feel that the official release does not do the storyline justice. Its my opinion that a remake is in order and its my opinion that the game deserves it.

The remake would feature the following.

-Towns-person dialog that is meaningful to the game.
-Correct spelling.
-An enlargement of the cast of enemies.
-More gear
-All mansions have bosses and some would have sub bosses as well.
-Selectable difficulty: Normal, Hard, Expert
-Side quests that produce optional rewards and/or gear.
-2 status ailments, Poison, and Petrify.
-Clues that are meaningful.
-The inclusion of at least one more castle other than the final approach to dracula's keep.
-Armor other than Dracula's Rib.

While I cannot do the actual programming, I would be able to handle the sprites, music, level backgrounds, general storyline (which does not deviate heavily from the official storyline), all dialog of town people and storyline, all clue text, all side quests, and etc.

If I'm already working on something with you this does not constitute an abandoning, repeat does NOT constitute an abandoning of that project.

Its a plus if you speak an East European / Russo-Slavic language.

This is intended to be a fan game and no actual money will change hands. However, anyone working on this with me will have a creative voice as well and I would value their opinion and take it seriously. Anyone who works on this with me is intended to have their name (real or forum) in the credits so that its known who did what.

Finally, while its in my mind at least initially as an 8 bit game, I'm fine with making it any other number of bits if whomever should be working with me wishes or needs it to be some other number of bits.

While it naturally could not be a Castlevania remake, if we work well enough there is a chance I may call upon you to help with a game at a later time, this other game may well be intended for actual sale as well.

Well... it seemed like a good idea at the time. This doesn't mean I don't plan to still do it. It just means such a game already exists.

I'll take a look at it.

But this only proves my point. Simon's Quest had a good storyline and idea that could have gone a lot further than the original 8 bit game did.

Having looked at the videos I was sent to through the link, I do not view it as competition. I view it as a model to learn from and as work data that reflects the skill of the programmer.

Its my goal to make the absolute best possible remake I can and its my goal for it to be truly epic in scope of play.

The one major stumbling block I have is that I cannot program. I had already started working on this idea before I ever posted the ad, and I still hope to make the game if I can.

Not at all disregarding the fact that there is already a remake in existence, is there any chance of anyone helping me make this?

aside from the fan game mentioned above, there is also someone one this forum who wanted to do a CV2 remake as well. He pretty-much listed all the things you had mentioned in your post and we were throwing ideas his way too. I don't know if he's still here. It's been a while and I really want to see how his project is coming along. If you want to do your own CV2 remake then please, I'd be glad to play it.

As yet I hope for the graphics to be fairly close to what the 8 bit game's graphics were like. My plan is to use the Sprites from Simon's Quest, but I could make it work with stuff from Super Castlevania 4 too. I'm already working on something at the moment however and so this is just in the idea stages at the moment.

I remember there was a time when Castlevania fan games and hacks were all the rage.  The ideas always sound cool on paper, and if you're lucky, you'll get the occasional Youtube video that resembles a coherent game, but from my experience, people rarely finish projects like this, because they're pretty daunting to do well.  They often take years, and during that time, many of the people doing them move on to other things.  If you can find someone willing to program, that would be really cool and surprising.  Most people that can do that and who are doing non-profit games are likely off doing their own things and being their own bosses.  That said, if you can pull something like this off, that would be awesome.

I wish you the best of luck with your project, and I hope you find a programmer who will help you out with your ideas.

EDIT: The entire thread has been cleaned up.  Please respond only with constructive criticism.

Will it be a 16 bit remake like Castlevania Chronicles, or an 8 bit enhanced game?

Just curious.

I've sent some messages out to various people with a job request, yes, I'm waiting on them to answer me. If none of them answer me in time I'm going to get a game maker program and do it myself. And then redo it till Its to my satisfaction.

It could still go either way and could be 8 or 16 bit.

Don't say such overconfident things before you get into it though. Coding is a lot of hard work. (I'd know.)

You may think you'll keep trying until you get it right until you're stuck on the same piece of code for 2 weeks, then fold and settle for whatever you can get working. You could continue to redo and redo it until it's perfect though. In which case you are me, and it's been 2 years since your last public update.

A lot of people just dont have the mental capability for thinking in terms of code, sad but very true. Beware the world you're about to step into. Don't treat it like it'll go all according to plan if you're determined. You need the mentality to back it up. Prepare for months or years of research alone before you can do anything at all.

Oh and, don't think 1 programmer is all you'll need to make the game unless it's extremely simplistic or you are expecting to release 5 years from now.
