Mercury Steam wants to move on to Contra next after they're done with LoS2. Question now is, who should take the reigns of the franchise after them? Or should Konami give Castlevania a long break?

A Vanillaware CV game will have little to no platforming

Either WayForward (Bloodrayne Betrayal, Contra 4) or Chair Entertainment (Shadow Complex) are the best bets. Hell, the gameplay in SC was even inspired by Super Metroid & Symphony.

I wanted Wayforward to make Castlevania 5 ever since I played Contra 4. They would do a fantastic job, and I would love to see new original sprites by them.

I vote WayForward or Platinum Games, but really I'd have them handle pretty much any old game series I love.

Not really sure if I want a MS Contra at all though. If Castlevania isn't a series that emphasized storyline, that goes at least five times more for Contra. (Not to mention my fear that it will be turned into yet another goddamn cover-based shooter. If it must be done, a Contra reboot should be much more Serious Sam and much less Gears of War.)

What you say about SC is true more but it's more "super" to me though, but I think the style that vanillaware could bring would be absolutely incredible that hand drawn style yes. Wayfoward made a bloody good looking title, but the art style that Vanillaware made with Odin Sphere, Muramasa, and their other works blow WF and Chair in the sense of style, as for platforming if it was a classicvania yeah, but the platforming in MV's is really boring almost no sense of dying for maybe in some places, but the platforming was never really a worry to me in those games.

After what went down with Castlevania I'm extremely iffy about Mercurysteam doing a Contra title. I'm very much in agreement with Munchy. Wayforward did an excellent job on Contra 4 and I really want to see them tackle Castlevania. But unless Mercurysteam can pull off a Contra title that is even remotely worthy of the name then they shouldn't bother.

The guys who did Demon's/Dark Souls should do Castlevania next.

I second From Software (Demon's/Dark Souls). They know level design, interconnected 3D worlds, scary atmosphere and 3D combat with an old-school feeling - one that is faaaar away from the God of Wars or DMCs we've come to expect. And before someone says "Dark Souls is nothing like Castlevania!" (which some of you have in the past) I'd say it's not the point what you think. They wouldn't be making another Souls game. They'd be making a Castlevania with all the elements mentioned above. And it could potentially be awesome.

I also second WayForward.

Vanillaware is questionable to me though. I haven't seen anything from them that could even qualify as level design yet. That's not to say they can't do it, but I would much rather let them handle the art direction and have someone else design the actual game. They would of course have to tone down the fairy tale/story book look and go for something darker, but equally detailed.

Wayforward really seems to want to get their hands on alot of those retro franchises like Mega Man or Castlevania, judging by Bloodrayne Betrayal alone. Hell, Jake Kaufman made the chiptune verison of the OST with the CV3 music specs didnt he?

Im sure they could make an epic, and beautiful Castlevania.

I just dont get it when it's compared to Castlevania. "Oh Dark Souls feels like a Castlevania" which ive seen before. THAT I dont get. As far as actual mechanics and shit goes though, I could possibly see it a bit.

I get what y ou mean. It would be interesting to see them make a CV game with CV-ish landscapes and gothic design. Maybe something Baroque inspired. I'm just so fuckin sick of the medieval knights and "Olde" style. I'm not asking to bring it into contemporary setting, but something circa the time spanning 1600s-1800s, Baroque to Victorian, the CV1, CV2, HoD, RoB, SotN, OoE, Stoker's Dracula eras. No more knights of holy orders and the Crusades backdrop. Class it up a bit, but keep it dark and creepy.

"The team behind the latest Castlevania titles has voiced concern over being bogged down by too much Castlevania. Mercury Steam, who has worked on both Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2, hopes to move into new territory to avoid being known as 'The Castlevania Team.' "

Am I the only one who finds this incredible off-putting? It's a real turn-off to speak of the series like it's a burden, and that they simply just wanna get it over with. It's especially annoying to hear developers saying things like that when they've got TWO new games coming out. Talk about killing the hype  >:(

It's like: "Yeah, we're working on these games but you should know that we're soooo over this and we're only doing it cause Konami told us to."

I don't really care who would take over Castlevania as long as they return to the aesthetic from before the Lords of Shadow series. From what I've seen from Contra 4 which seems very faithful to the rest of the series to me, I wouldn't have a problem with those developers taking a shot at a Castlevania game.

I wouldn't mind seeing Arc system works create a Castlevania game for home consoles, even if it were just a downloadable one like Hard Corp Uprising.

I Guess MS was only ever interested in using Castlevania to help boost their profile, mind you I'm not complaining I'll be happy to see them go and 3 games is a pretty decent contribution to the franchise anyway.

Well since the dev team for the next Castlevania will be most likely western, I'd say Vigil could give it a shot(if they haven't gone out of business by 2014) if they're going big budget again. But if it's small budget then I'd say Wayforward would be the best pick considering how faithful Contra 4 was.

If, by a small chance that a japanese dev team is chosen to do Castlevania, From Software or bust.
