Pretty much nothing in the RE movies has anything to do with the continuity of the games. You could fit the first movie into the RE story if you place it before RE0 and say it takes place in the same mansion as that game. 2nd movie is a retelling of RE2/3 with an emphasis on glorifying 'Alice'. From then on the movies completely diverge from the games. Namely, the movies depict a post apocalyptic setting that never happens in the games at all. Oh, and none of the movies after 2 take place in the same place as any of the games.
I suspected something like that. Thanks.  :)

Actually that's what George Romero, the father of the modern zombie genre, did when he was set to make the Resident Evil movie. And his script was far more faithful than the one we wound up with. Anderson comes off more like someone started to describe the plot to him and he cut them off after 15 seconds "Zombies secret base yaddyadda I got it." At least fans have the Biohazard 2 commercials Romero made.

Only reason MK didn't blow junks was because it was already a lighthearted send-up of every kung fu cliche known to man. With a barely-there plot to start with.
I don't think his wife likes her Mary-Sue characters to be tied down to anything so inconvenient as established canon or characters. He sure doesn't seem to like being tied by them in any other area of his movies. We're talking about a guy who's idea of "adaptation" is to make a move, roughly in the same genre (for the first entry anyway) with the same antagonists and a few familiar names slapped onto otherwise unrelated characters.

Even if he just wants to produce and not direct, I thoroughly expect any Castlevania movie he has a hand in to suck, it's only a question of how much.
Actually the the first MK movie didn't blow chunks was because Boon and Tobias was involved with it throughout the whole process of it being made. Unlike the 2nd movie and it showed...

Didn't one of them (Tobias I think) co-write the screenplay for the second? I remember the name popping up a few times in the credits. From the point of view of a not-huge-fan of the series Annihilation is an incredibly stupid and goofy, but fun, movie. I imagine it wouldn't get as much flack today if the effects had aged better and they'd kept Sonya's original actress. I can only guess at how painful it is to the MK faithful though.

PS - It was kind of weird to change Jade from black to asian though.

As far as I know one of the MK co-creators was working on the script for the movie. I guess they thought that whatever crap they will produce, power of the brand will make it profitable. Besides, nobody expected that first movie will be succesful.
Another big problem with the movie was that it was directed by the operator of the first movie. Paul Anderson quit from being director, after writers refused to change script whatsoever. Change of actors and lousy special effects didn't helped either.

I've read several fanfics that were written better than MKAn...
