Madou Monogatari, a dungeon crawler RPG starring the cast of Puyo Puyo. Comical in some ways, but only 1 or 2 of the titles have been translated. The one on Saturn is pure RPG.

Have you played Mother 3? It's unreleased in the U.S. and can only be played through a patched (translated) rom. Also Mother (also known colloquially as Earthbound 0) and Mother 2 (known as Earthbound on the SNES). Mother 3 is by far the best, and there are only very very vague references (more like inside winks) to the other 2 games. But Mother 3 was such a moving game by brother was actually crying.

Have you given Hyperdimension Neptunia a try yet? It`s a pretty good rpg if you don't mind panty shots. The game's story might not be what you're looking for thought.

Phantasy Star. The story is pretty basic (it's an 8bit RPG) but fun setting and unique-for-consoles (especially at the time) first person dungeons. I've heard 2 and 4 are great as well but haven't played them.

From what I recall, PS1 is the only first-person crawler; the others are overhead/side-scrollers.

Yep. And it's only the dungeons in PS1 that are first person.

Phantasy Star 1 and 2 are both gems in their own right.

I love the former game to pieces.

Fire Emblem. It's role playing. I kinda wanted to make my girl avie make a move on Stahl in the newest one.

The Ogre series is a whole freaking series.. that was cut short. :(

Front Mission is an awesome series. You can get an English patch for them if you have a good emulator or SwapMagic or modded PS2 (the earlier ones can be handled on an emulator just fine). If you play 1st, should play the DS or PS versions since they include the expansions. Very lengthy series, too: Front Mission 1st, Front Mission 2, Front Mission 3, Front Mission 4 (released in English), Front Mission 5 (good translation patch available if you have the capability), and Front Mission Alternative. The other three or so games in the series don't count, just spinoffs.

The core Shining series: Shining Force, Shining Force II, Shining Force III Scenario 1, Shining Force III Scenario 2, Shining Force III Scenario 3, Shining in the Darkness, Shining the Holy Ark (you can ignore Shining Wisdom and anything from Shining Soul onward). All-time fave RPGs.

Dragon Force 1 and 2. I've beaten that game sooo many fucking times and still play it.

Slayers Royale 1 and 2. Try to find a patch for it and play it that way, because there's a LOT of Japanese in it but omg it's like an interactive anime and fun.

Sakura Wars 1 and 2. TRPG meets dating sim. Total fun.

Wachenroeder. The graphics are dated and I didn't understand a single fucking word, but it's a steampunk RPG, fairly easy to beat but I loved the actual artwork.

Grandia (there's three games but I've only played the first --EDIT: Four games. I played a little of the 4th. EDIT 2: Apparently 5 games. I only played Grandia 1 and Grandia Gameboy Color.). Such. A. Fucking. Wonderful. Gem. ... ... And two of the saddest/most beautiful songs in video game history. I literally cried when Sue got left behind. And Feena's love theme is just... oh my god that song always brings a tear to my eye.
And who could forget the fucking epic intro. When I popped the disc into my Saturn and saw this, I came. Noriyuki Iwadare is boss. If the name sounds familiar, he worked on Langrisser, Lunar, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Y's III,  Wing Commander, Ace Attorney, and Kid Icarus Uprising.
Grandia - Intro
Kid Icarus: Uprising Music - Hades' Theme

Since you're more into turn-based RPGs, I'm recommending what I always recommend to people looking for a good classic RPG. Play either the Sega CD or PS1 versions of Lunar Silver Star Story and Lunar 2 Eternal Blue. You get voice acting (albeit a little cheesy at times), anime cutscenes, and a good overall light-hearted story in a colorful world compared to some of the "darker" RPGs like Final Fantasy VII.

The Shin Megami Tensei series is also really good, whether you try the main series or the Persona spin-off series, all of the games are relatively good. I've only played Shin Megami Tenshi Nocturne, Persona 3, and Persona 4 though. I have some of the other games, just haven't gotten around to playing them yet. Not sure about the rest of the series, but Nocturne, Persona 3, and Persona 4 also take a little bit of thinking and strategy since enemy weaknesses play a rather important role, and if you have the wrong element, you are basically in a world of trouble...ESPECIALLY IN NOCTURNE. Nocturne is HARD, but one of my favorite PS2 games. Persona 3 and Persona 4 are really good too, though.

Valkyrie Profile.

The only RPG that can take you a long time to beat, while still having the option to beat the game in under 2 hours, without any sort of new game plus.

Phantasy Star, Earthbound/Mother, Lunar, Grandia-I have played all of these & loved each if them in it's own special way. Persona-alas, I tried it at the tender age of 12 or so & unfortunately I just didn't really get it. I feel I'm more than ready to give it abother go with my grown up lady brain now. Valkyrie Chronicles-always meant to try it, thanks for reminding me of it. To ebay! (I'm not at all above emulating, I just prefer the original console experience when money allows).

Again, loving the suggestions folks, keep 'em coming!

P.S. I'm no stranger to them, I just find it odd that no one's suggested the Breath of Fire series yet. Great games.

Ya know, I have the first one for XBOX (Sonic's Classics Collection or whatever-old Genesis & Master System games), I just hadn't really tried it yet. I guess Streets of Rage & Phantasy Star IV had me in their ass-kicking grip. I need to put my controller back together (broken left shoulder button, just ordered the parts to fix it today) & take that title for a test run.
