System(s) with largest catalogue of games?

Anyone know which systems have the biggest amount of games from all types of genres? I'm pretty sure the NES might be number 1 but I could be wrong.

Can anyone compile a list of these systems, starting with the largest & going down the list from there?

It seems that Playstation 1 and 2 are our winners here. Something like:

1- PS2
2- PS1
3- SNES/Super Famicom
4- NES/Famicom

It have taken a good time, now let me rest for a while :P

Hmm good detective work Lely.

I take it you're discounting the PC? XD

Yeah wouldn't really be fair since the PC comprises so many different platforms/operating systems. Though it would be neat to see a count of games by the various OSs. Too gargantuan a task to be completed or even undertaken when it comes to both the Macintosh App store and Windows alone though. Especially considering how many games have probably been created but never published/were published but are now lost to the ether etc. for those platforms.

Hmm good detective work Lely.

Thanks, a list for PC games exist in wikipedia, but they are incomplete and no one counted how many tiles they had, so someone would need to count one by one in the list manually (or use some neat codes or programs that count how many lines of text exists in a page).

Here you can find all kinds of information:

How do you count 3DS+DS?
Or Wii+Virtual Console? ... I think Wii might win there.

Then we should count PS1+PS2, Genesis+CD+32X, PS3+PS2+PS1 games launched in PSN, Wii+Virtual Console+GC and so on, this logic isn't flawed in any way, but would cause more trouble for counting things. I've counted only physical copies also.

If someone wants to use these statistics for counting like that then feel free, it can be really interesting.

PS1 late in it's life was a home to shovelware, Wii had a lot of that as well as GBA/GBC (Disney teeny bop crap anyone), yeah they count as games, but I refuse to count for such garbage.

The 8 and 16 bit systems did have some game show titles on them, but nothing like what they put out now (ok SNES has Home Improvement, ugh, some of the stuff I've seen line Wal-Mart shelves for the Wii is shameful).

Lots of fluff in my eyes.

It seems to me that, historically, all systems tend to get an inordinate amount of shovelware towards the end of their lives. Because the systems have become relatively cheap to develop for while they're are about as widely available as they're gonna get, both of which appeal to someone wanting to shovel some crap for a quick buck. Add to this the fact that the console maker is looking ahead to their next system and care even less about what they give their "quality seal"/publishing permission. And you see that the dying gasps of a console generation form the "perfect shovelware storm".

This last generation hasn't followed that pattern so much of course, since the Wii was basically a Gamecube with motion control duct taped on it was already dirt cheap to develop for compared to the competition, and Nintendo didn't want to look like they had few games, which I think was a perception which hurt them with the Gamecube. It'll be interesting to see how much shovelware we see compared in this coming generation as compared to previous ones, on the one hand the appstore attracts a lot of the licensed game, quick-buck slop. But going by Sturgeon's Law, we'll probably get as many bad downloadable titles on consoles as good ones, if not more.

What about sports games? That's kinda a cop-out. Same games released year after year with just a few variables and textures changed but primarily still the same games. I don't think those should count, but they clearly did in those figures.

Well, if we're just talking about variety I think the best way to get it in consoles is just to jump around generations. It seems to me each generation so far has had 2 or 3 things that they do really well or are very popular and 90% of the games for that generation will be like that. So if you want variety in console games all you have to do is skip a generation. Even with sports games you could play Hockey on the 2600, then on the Genesis, then Dreamcast and finally current gen and you'd have a lot of gameplay variety.

My first Soccer game was in the SNES, its rented and then I returned a week later, but it was most fun than some soccer games post-PSX, until PSX they did it right. I like when crazy things happens in a sport game, make it too perfect and I lose interest in it,
