Haha! After all this time I picture your avatar character in a funny way!  ;D
Now I'm tired, eternally walking... forever dying, and never stopping. I feel in sorrow, all I see is white. I’m following a blind way beneath a sad sky.

I was playing Castlevania NES earlier and made some notes, some of them are not true anymore post-SOTN. It started out as a list of things that made the game harder than the Igavanias but has some notes on the presentation as well:

OLD SKOOL CV DIFFICULTY

- low whip mobility
- injury flinch
- collecting items overwrites previous items with no way of going back
- even if you dodge all the Medusa heads in STAGE 06 and make it to the left door, one can come out of nowhere and hit you as you go through the door
- endless enemies spawning is tied to room
   - demons created by the impossible architecture
   - Castlevania itself is the source of the monsters
- rare drops even this early, a ghost (fire blowing up as if controled from below) dropped II item
- shadows are all expertly crafted, purposeful jaggies, digital weathering
- Medusa boss enters after you walk R>L, so you feel disoriented (switching from the normal orientation L>R)
- whip does not hit backwards
- jumps lose control after initial departure
- dystopian stair controls, the illusion of choice, first Quick Time Event? (hold > or < to proceed)
- someone needs to 3d print lifesize versions of the moss-covered classical statues in STAGE 08
- the whip connecting the bone statue sounds industrial
vaguely like Kraftwerks "Metal on Metal" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYAb0J2w0q4
   - very chunky noise, industrial, proto-steampunk
- enemies that reward patience vs. enemies that reward quick attacks
- all skeletons are jumping
- levelling up your whip = primal version of levelling up your character

Maybe a better designation is "Castlevania with punishing stair controls" vs. w/o

I call Simon's Quest as "Zelda2vania" since it has a lot more common with Zelda 2 Link's Adventure than Metroid. Calling SOTN as Metroidvania is quite accurate for me since the stage structure, save points and a map system looks exactly the same as Super Metroid.

The term for metroidvania should actually be called "ZeldaVania". IGA stated in some interview (forgot which one) that the exploration thing in SOTN was inspired by the LoZ games.

Nah I disagree with it being called that since it shares more in common with Super Metroid than Zelda due to

1.Exploration
2.Save Rooms
3.Map System

Ditto too. not sure what IGA was thinking when he mentioned Zelda2vania.
"Spirituality is God's gift to humanity...
Religion is Man's flawed interpretation of Spirituality given back to humanity..."
