You consider Dragon's Lair a bad or mediocre game? I think it's pretty badass. I have the Wii Dragon's Lair Trilogy which far as I can tell runs the games really smoothly. The only thing I dislike about the game is that when playing on a widescreen TV, it crops the top and bottom of the image. This can be avoided, but you have to go to the Wii settings and set it to 4:3, and then use your TV's view option to squish the wide image to its proper 4:3 frame. It's a bit of a hassle, but since it allows me to play the games in their original aspect ratio, I'll do it—but the game really should have allowed you to choose 16:9 or 4:3 in the options menu.

No, that isn't what I meant at all. i love the shit out of it, but it gets a reputation for being bad/mediocre for its outrageous difficulty. I was thinking more along the lines of "games OTHER PEOPLE generally consider bad/mediocre that YOU like." Which is why I initially said Lords of Shadow.

Ohohoho, I see.

OP asked for games we thought were bad or mediocre but liked anyway, hence the confusion. :)

What did you think of the AVGN's thrashing of it? I hate to say (because I love the CV-like premise and graphics) but it seems pretty accurate from what I've played of the game.
Actually, I found the episode to be really funny. One of my favourites. And I was surprised the Nerd mentioned every mistake I used to laugh at when playing the game.
Still, I love that game!  :)

Deadly Towers. With the aid of a walkthrough, I can have fun with it. I can see how most would hate it, though. Being seriously underpowered at the beginning may have a lot to do with it (and so do the cheap pit deaths, the confusing dungeon, the general sense of not knowing what to do, but I digress).

I like Karate Kid for the NES, too. It's a nice little distraction to play for a half hour or so. And there are so many ways to earn extra lives that it kind of cancels out the frustration of getting juggled to death by enemies and sticks and whatnot.

I also like Rival Turf. Not the best beat-em-up out there, but still more interesting than the Final Fight sequels. Somehow. Brawl Brothers was okay, too. Peace Keepers kinda sucked, though.

T&C Surf Design. Man...that game was shit. But it was fun. Even trying to pretend that you knew how the surfing part worked could be fun sometimes. And the cat in the tuxedo is a stone cold pimp. Tied with Karate Kid for best LJN game.  ;)

I could go on forever about crap games I like, so I'll stop here.
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

T&C Surf Design.

Another good game, though I can see why a lot of people would say otherwise. This is one of the first games that i had when we got our NES for the first time. That and CV 2. I also find it amusing and interesting that the surfing gorilla ends up becoming the gadgeteering mechanic Funky Kong in the Donky Kong Country series.

the new Devil May Cry:DmC game. I don't know if this counts because I think it's a really fun great game, but I get shit for that opinion.

I like the new art direction, I think the combat, while not as hardcore as DMC4 Dante's, is really fun, fast, and interesting, and I really love the use of the Unreal 3 Engine. Being able to see the terrain change in front of your very eyes is pretty cool. I even like the rebooted characters. *shots fired*

I stand with you, Docta-San!

I love the new DmC and I consider it is the best (by far) of the DMC franchise, with the only exception perhaps of DMC3 story. But nothing else. As a game, it is the best and more complete and fun to play, and the most engaging one, not to mention the graphics are the best and the fact that it actually includes characters with personalities and a deep, mature story.

I wish they'd made another one, but seeing how everyone disliked it, I doubt it.

No, I completely agree. See, I have this real stupid thing I do called detaching myself from my fandom in the case of a revamp or retold canon. I happen to love the shit out of DmC, and eagerly hope they continue the story, despite its various flaws. It plays very smoothly, for being so dissimilar (yet so similar at the same time) to the original gameplay style. I very much love the grappling elements and the deviations the game takes from the now-typical GoW-esque chain grappling.

And Kat's a better damn character than Trish or Lucia ever were(though they do have their merits), as far as I'm concerned.

People lost their minds over Lords of Shadow, and two sequels still came of it. Negative reactions don't always dictate the fate of sequels, so long as they aren't like the fuckwads now who send death threats to developers (seriously, can we just round these douchebags up and shoot them or something?).

Yeah after playing it some more the game definitely has it's own charm. If the hit and jump detection were a little more tight it might be a hidden classic on the level of Astyanax, unfortunately as it is it's not a very good game for control reasons. The password+non-infinite continues thing is really annoying but even Castlevania is guilty of this with Bloodlines.

DmC selled well?

It went Platinum with approximately 1,100,000 units sold. It might not be that big by comparison, but it isn't as much of a flop as people might think it was. Devil May Cry 3, which is very highly valued, is only a slight bit above it on the sales tier(I've never understood why DMC2 did better than 3 did, but whatevs), and just for comparison Megaman X is barely above it. So it goes to show that sales figures and fan reactions don't always dominate, exclusively or not.

Remembered another one. A lot of people give it poor ratings. Konami's very own HYBRID HEAVEN (N64). For its time, it was a really intriguing video game story with its twists, and the art direction and unique combat system really stood out for me, despite the N64's limitations. I haven't seen a combat system quite like that since, and I'm a person who tends to like real-time over menu-based systems, so that's saying something. They mixed the two so well, though, giving a lot of control and variety to the player, and the physics of the actions felt real. I would love to see a sequel with some of the more MGS gameplay elements from the Beta demo video mixed in.
