i recall interviews from almost a decade ago how IGA had the entire scenario all thought out, exactly how Julius manages to obliterate Dracula for good. he described it as if it was a specific method, rather than the usual way Belmonts been doing it for centuries. maybe Dominus was involved? who knows

i guess its okay if someone contacts Iga via twitter or facebook and ask had he been given the opportunity, what the game would be like from his perspective. metroidvania? classicvania? mix of both? 3D?

in retrospect its prolly better that we never got to play it, as so much time has passed & the scenario we have in our heads is so spectacular that no matter what Konami did it just wouldnt live up. better to be a no-show than a bad-show, huh?

...but a part of me will always wonder

As much as I would like a 1999 game being made, I'm sure one won't be made. At least not for the old timeline. Who knows, if there is another reboot and it is more faithful to the lore of the old cannon than LoS was, we might get something like the unmade 1999 game. You know. A CV game where Dracula is defeated once and for all (unlike in the LoS saga….ha ha ha).

Yeah, the 1999 game we were all speculating about won't happen.

One final thing, if IGA had made the game, the story would likely have clashed with some of the established story like omitting the fact that the castle is supposed to be sealed in a solar eclipse, the fact that a priest from Japan is apart of said ritual, the fact that Julius seals the whip somewhere in the castle, and he might even forget that there is suppose to be a solar eclipse happening. It would be classic IGA. Gameplay and gimmicks first. Story second not caring how it fits into the overall story of the timeline.

Yeah we'll never officially get this game (I hope that fan project succeeds though).

IGA waited too long, wasted time and effort on other games, it got too big in the fans' minds, and now he has ended up paying for his procrastination. As soon as AoS was finished the 1999 game should have been the next CV game on his agenda. At least that's what I would have done. THEN he could have taken all the time he wanted with other CV projects.

I think if they had released 1999 too early nobody would have been interested in the filler stories. In that sense, it was good IGA hold off from releasing it.

^Pretty much this. Both Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia added little tidbits that further made the events of 1999 sound a lot more interesting. Though overall, I feel like the battle of 1999 will never actually be implemented into a game, unfortunately.

I feel as if I won't be as disappointed in it though, since I don't exactly hold those events in as high of anticipation as other fans do.

It could be that IGA's priorities got into a kerfluffle and so producing the 1999 scenario slipped from his hands.  Could be the Konami overlords wanted to play to The Market and so instead of having this brilliant thing happen, we instead got...well...whatever there was.  Like the DEATHNOTE guy designing fighting characters.  Or some shit.

I was really hoping to see Saint Germain pop up in Ruin to tie everything together.  Instead I got lots of uninspired backdrops (which didn't account for the processing potential at hand) amongst other quality issues.  Lots of quality issues...  :[

Agreed.

I personally would have waited until after Curse of Darkness was released and before Portrait or Ruin and Order of Ecclessia.

I seriously think that the 1999 Demon Castle War is more suitable as a novel or manga material rather than as an actual game, like what happened to the Curse of Darkness' back story as well as the aftermath of Sorrow games.

Its over. The game is never going to happen and the fan-games will never get properly done.

The next Castlevania (if it evens happens won't be a continuation of that timeline)

I believe IGA's next venture will be on Kickstarter. It will be in the same vein as a Metroidvania but probably a totally different animal and story altogether.

One can just hope that game is fun and we all accept it as a proper spin-off Metroidvania game.

I personally think IGA should start incorporating the actual elements from Bram Stoker's Dracula into actual games, kinda like how Bloodlines and Portrait of Ruin touched upon without staying in the Belmont landscape...

He's no longer affiliated with Konami so we could definitely ask him the full deets on 1999 now. I would be very interested in hearing what he had in mind.

Look at it this way: provided that Konami is willing to develop a new Castlevania game, and that it is willing to return to the original timeline (and neither is particularly likely), then it's actually more than probable that 1999 will be made. After all, the game is practically guaranteed to have an audience: with all of the hype that's been poured into it over the years, there's a good number of CV fans out there who will buy the title no matter what (myself among them). And who cares if they end up being disappointed? This is Konami: we're talking business here.

Will Konami ever release 1999? I doubt it, but I'm still not ruling it out as a possibility.

To be honest, I started losing faith in seeing the 1999 game back when the reboot started. Then I lost more faith when IGA suddenly vanished after HD came out and it turned out he got stuck making Kinect shovelware. Now I've lost all faith when he announced his departure from Konami (then again was he really there after HD?) and Konami has been dead silent on it's upcoming plans regarding the series.

The battle of 1999 will forever be that one Family Guy cut away gag that didn't have a clip to go with it.

In all honesty, not releasing it was smart, it left the player wanting to know what happened, provided a nice backdrop to the sorrow series and created esoteric mystery - perhaps the largest in the series (just how can somebody completely destroy the Lord of Darkness?)

If anything I believe he would have been better off making a GCI film like FFVII advent children, because if the game were to have been in 3d, I very much doubt it would have been a raging success, given Iga's track record.

What happened to 1999? What happened to 2dvania?
The world will never know, and sometimes it's better off that way.

It takes 63 starting at the top. 45 starting from the side. Chewing it up, it takes 8 bites.
