Imagine it: Castlevania rebooted as a Gradius-style shoot'em up.

Here's what I think it'd be like:

Story:
Every 100 years, the evil space parasite Dracula arises from the darkness of the cosmos aiming to devour the galaxy, and brings with him the Devil Battleship Castlevania, a colossal battleship that reconstructs itself from inside a black hole every time Dracula is revived.

Dracula intents to conquer the galaxy using his seemingly infinite army, but first he must go through the Wallachian System, where the Space Fleet "Belmont" keeps watch.

Everytime Dracula is returned, the Space Fleet Belmont launches one of its most powerful fighters to invade Castlevania, and destroy its main power core, where Dracula resides, using the special weapon "Divine Laser Whip Beam", the only weapon able to destroy the power core.

Gameplay:

Every game would have one of the "powerful fighters" as playable ships. The names would be Belmont names, but turned into codenames because rule of cool.

The first would be Belmont Model "TR.Evor", and be followed by Belmont Model "Christ.0PHER", "S1M-0N", "Just-E", "RICH-tr" and even "JULIUS". There could be an assisting fleet called "Morris Fleet".

The powerups would come inside Candle Satellites (used to light the way on the darkest parts of space), which upon being shot, would release Heart Batteries and equipment for the ships (that would consume Heart Battery to use). The equipments, of course, would be the subweapons.

The main weapon would be a common shooting cannon, but the ships would come equipped with a very powerful beam that cannot be used all the time, the "Divine Laser Whip Beam". Only Belmont Models can wield such a powerful whip without degrading the ship's integrity. The beam recharges with time in a bar. You can technically use it frequently, but the more charged the bar is, the more powerful and long the beam becomes.

The enemies would be Castlevania enemies, turned into robots/drones/space monsters. Just imagine Medusa Drones flying just like they do in Castlevania, but in a row just like some enemies do in Gradius, and after destroying an entire row, they drop Heart Batteries too. Skeletons would be ground based machines that throw bone-shaped missiles in an arc motion... Just think about this shit!

The bosses would be epic screen-filling abominations and fast-moving core-based ships! The Giant Bat would be renamed "Devil Battleship Gate Guardian: Vampire Vessel" or Death "Dracula's High General: Grim Reaper Craft"

Dracula himself would be the final boss (of course), but in this "reboot" he'd not be a vampire. He'd be some sort of mad scientist, that fuses with the main core to attack your ship. His second form would be a more mutation-like thing vaguely ressembling a demon.

The backgrounds would be your sci-fi themes, but mixed with grotesque machinery-like decorations. Just imagine Clock Tower converted to a shmup stage.

Bonus: "Alucard" is a spaceship created by Dracula himself to be the ultimate fighter jet, but gained sentience and went rogue.

Even more bonus: Leon and Mathias were the original scientists behind the "Belmont" technology, but Mathias wanted to take over the galaxy with it while Leon wanted to make it into the perfect exploration fleet. Mathias turned against the Space Exploration Comitee and stole the Crimson Particle, originally used to power the space-exploring ships. Aiming to create the most powerful battleship ever made, he developed the Devil Battleship Castlevania, but the constant exposure to the particle turned him into a mutant in constant need to absorb stars in order to survive and further his goals of covering the galaxy in eternal darkness.

Leon, without option, uncovered secret knowledge developed by late scientist Rinaldo Gandolfi, the Alchemy Particle, and perfected it to become the "Divine Laser Whip Beam", the only weapon able to counter Crimson Particle-powered weapons.

Side stories/Gaiden Games would be about Dracula ressurrecting in different parts of the universe and facing off against Space Bounty Hunter Sonia, or Galatic Reconnaissance Team BALDWIN.

That's it dudes. I'll have to make sprite mockups from this someday.

Ah, and the names of the things are ridiculouly long to reflect those japanese naming conventions from space-shmup games.

I'm interested in this.
It is precisely because it never cared, that people do care.  It's something which it's lacking, because that which it has, it has lackluster of.

Something I made to reflect this idea on my now very restricted time to sprite. Soon I'll be back to my computer, though, and try to make something cool with these little dudes.

Hey theplottwist, don't forget to design a super battle fortress called 'Galamoth 5'.

PS I'll shake my at those who don't get the pun.

Hey theplottwist, don't forget to design a super battle fortress called 'Galamoth 5'.

PS I'll shake my at those who don't get the pun.

Yes, I've designed a BUNCH of crap that will never be used already (in words only).

And yes, Galamoth is a Belser-esque giant Battleship himself, with an Electric Core as the boss.
Legion is a gigantic parasitic entity covered in scrap metal and wildlife absorbed from other planets.
Zombies are degraded Belmont ships, turned against the Belmont Fleet through Crimson Particle manipulation.
Medusa Drones are swarm enemies. Small, fragile, but fast.
Fleaman are ground based crafts that leap around trying to reach the ship's height.
Death is a battleship himself composed of a giant mecha and a scythe-like weapon. Only the scythe itself is sentient, though.

Maria is an engineer, able to construct the "Detection Chip" who enables Alucard to identify the virus controlling the Richter ship.

Sypha and Grant are devices. Sypha Device is an Options-like device that shoots elemental based bombs while following the ship, while Grant Device enables the ship adhere to the terrain without exploding.

Wall Meat here is "Wall Shield" that can be found inside asteroids and battleship walls, which grants a shield to the ship. More Wall Shield makes the ship's shield more powerful.

Also, every Belmont ship is able to use the Divine Laser Whip Beam in a diferent way. For instance, Simon is able to whip/shoot in different directions, Richter is able to wiggle the laser whip around and deflect projeticles for the duration of it's Charging Bar, Trevor is able to extend the Divine Laser Whip Beam Charging Bar with powerups (but can only whip foward), Christopher's beam can shoot fireballs, etc etc

"PORTRAIT" is a ship constructed when the Belmont Fleet disappeared, by the MORRIS fleet. It is a ship that can switch between two attacking modes called "Jonathan" and "Charlotte". It's equipped with the Divine Laser Whip Beam device, but can't use it properly without finding the "Lecarde Engine" which is lost in space (In the clutches of the scientist Brauner, in fact, who in turn is infected with the Crimson Particle himself). Besides, it can only use the beam while in "Jonathan" mode. The "Charlotte" mode allows the ship to use the Charging Bar to execute powerful attacks.

"Shanoa" is a special ship designed to be able to absorb the Crimson Particle inside Dracula's fleet after destroying them, using the "DOMINUS" Probe, that is able to convert Crimson Particles to mimick their powers. The "DOMINUS" probe, once deployed, can revert the Crimson Core's flow into itself and make it implode using its stored and converted Crimson Particles. But if used anywhere else besides into the Crimson Core itself, it can create a black hole that will consume the entire galaxy. It was constructed by the ECCLESIA organization to destroy the Crimson Core, but the true goal was to make the ship become Dracula's vessel by extreme accumulation of Crimson Particles on the DOMINUS probe, and making it explode through a "malfunction", that would open a blackhole able to summon the Demon Battleship Castlevania.

"Gabriel" is a ship manufactured by a rival Space Exploration Fleet called "Mercury Fleet". The ship was built to be able to defeat Dracula faster and much more efficiently, but it was secretly infected with a Crimson Particle by infiltrated scientist Dave Alvarez, who wanted to see Dracula conquering the galaxy. The ship ends up becoming Dracula's vessel while trying to face him, after Dracula himself absorbs it by controlling it's Crimson Particle and uses it as his new host. Yeah, the "Gabriel" ship turns into "Ressurrected Crimson Core: Dracula".

The subweapons don't even need to be "translated" into a Shmup game. Holy Water being the most extreme example. Put it as a Gradius' Missile weapon, and no one will ever notice the difference. Same goes for the other weapons.

The Alucard ship, as mentioned previously, is a ship with a sentient core built by Dracula to rival the Belmont ships. However, it went rogue and turned against him (thanks to a system bug called "LISA", previously an auxiliary artificial intelligence created by Dracula to assist him in building Alucard). Alucard is able to use Familiar Drones, the Alucard Laser Spear Beam (Analogous to the Divine Laser Whip Beam), and is equipped with the Mist Device, which allows it to go transluscent temporarily. The ship makes contact with the Lecarde Union and delivers them his Alucard Laser Spear Beam device, which they eventually reverse engineer into the "Lecarde Engine", curiously constructed by Dracula with the Crimson Particle much the same way as Leon made the Divine Laser Whip Beam with the Alchemy Particle. That'd be how "PORTRAIT" would be able to unlock its DLWB, by using the technology of the Lecarde Engine.

Eric would be the ship constructed and piloted by the Lecarde Union's leader scientists Stella and Loretta, to defeat the scientist Brauner using the Lecarde Engine to generate the Alucard Laser Spear Beam. But it'd be destroyed, and Brauner would get his hands on the Lecarde Device himself, while enslaving Stella and Loretta to serve as assistants. The sisters would later use the Lecarde Engine's knowledge to unlock the DLWB on the PORTRAIT ship.

It's an idea. Without a programmer and an assistant pixel artist, this will never leave the realm of fanfiction.

So what about the Albus unit? :V

I though about it... Albus could also be an ECCLESIA ship, piloted by genius engineer, and equipped with the tactical weapon "Agharta Cannon" and a Short Distance Teleportation Engine.

The pilot eventually uncovers the plot by ECCLESIA's high commander Barlowe to activate the malfunction on the DOMINUS probe to deploy it at a wrong time and summon Dracula, so through a boss battle, the Albus pilot steals the DOMINUS and takes it through the Wallachian System's many planets prompting Shanoa to follow it. The pilot, being a genius engineer, plans to earn time to fix the probe's malfunction so it can REALLY be used to defeat Dracula in the future and not summon him.

Eventually, they clash again, and Shanoa defeats Albus, unfortunatelly before he could find a way to nullify the probe's inbuilt malfunction. High commander Barlowe appears, and activates the probe, which promptly opens the blackhole and starts consuming everything around it. Just as Shanoa is being absorbed, Albus turns its last energy reserves to boost the Teleportation Engine's capabilities to get Shanoa far from the black hole's grasp, at the price of sacrificing itself, while Barlowe imediatelly and silently disappears. The Albus ship, however, carried part of the accumulated Crimson Particles (the other part being used to summon the Demon Battleship Castlevania through DOMINUS) thanks to having used the DOMINUS probe itself, and teleports it to Shanoa in the shape of a repurposed Agharta Cannon, converted to function like an assistant vessel for particles working in tandem with the DOMINUS probe since he couldn't fix the original probe, allowing Shanoa to keep using the already absorbed Crimson Particle-powered powers, albeit with no new absorbing abilities since the Albus' pilot did not have time to properly repurpose it as a probe clone and couldn't get the original plans from Barlowe at ECCLESIA. With Barlowe gone, Shanoa's pilot realizes that he must track down the original DOMINUS plans at the ECCLESIA's HQ so he can finish repurposing the vessel-turned cannon, or Dracula will be undefeatable, and with no Barlowe there, he won't have any opposition.

However, Barlowe would be alive and well, and now back to the ECCLESIA HQ, right before Shanoa is able to recover the plans, he appears and confronts Shanoa, Barlowe now in his "Elemental Manipulating Mech" powered by a Crimson Particle. After his defeat, Shanoa recovers the plans to the original DOMINUS probe, and does the final modifications to the repurposed Agharta Cannon, successfully turning it into the DOMINUS probe MKII, which can now destroy the Crimson Core. Shanoa sets off to face Dracula, inside the Demon Battleship Castlevania.

After defeating Dracula, Shanoa deploys the DOMINUS probe MKII, which works just as predicted, reversing the Crimson Core's flow into itself, making it implode and generating another black hole that sucks the Demon Battleship back into nothingness.
