I'm receiving an M-16 from the army next week. But I'll eat lots of shit from my commander for two weeks until I learn to carry and use it properly. Also I probably won't be allowed to carry it home.
You'll do fine, just pay attention and do everything your instructors tell you, and most importantly look out for your battle buddies. How well you take care of that guy next to you will impress the shit out of them.
I was issued the M-16 in basic for like 5 weeks, qualified with it, then they came and took them away and gave us M4's.
Our Army has pretty much replaced them with the carbine version. The AR series is easy to handle, shoot. Very accurate and reliable. Maintain it properly and it will serve you well.
Take care out there. Training will fly by before you know it.
