So as I might have mentioned, I'm rather fail at fighting games.

But I've always wanted a fighting game to be good at.

Enter, as of this morning, Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower on PSP. Several friends have recommended Darkstalkers to me over the years (and I admit, I've always wanted to play the games but the PS1 games are a bit on the pricy side if you want them in good condition), but somehow failed to mention this gem of an integrated port. That should be a sin.

I say "integrated port" because it's 3 games in one. As in, you are quite literally playing 3 games at once. Ever wanted to find out how Morrigan from Darkstalkers 1 would fare against Demitri from Darkstalkers 3? Well prep that shit up and see how it goes. Which is a positive BEAUTY of this game: swappable movesets. Each character has the option of using their moves from any of the previous releases, which really should be a standard for these kinds of releases.

And the difficulty of the single player is marvelously customizable. I found a perfect little difficulty nook I was comfortable in, and started beating the crap out of anything and everything pretty quickly after a few warm-ups.

The game is well balanced, and ready for any and all comers.

There's also that little bit of Darkstalkers being entirely the kind of Castlevania fighting game we had always wanted and deserved.

Yes, I'm pretty fucking late to this party, but better late than never.

For those who haven't played it, BUY THIS GAME. You owe it to yourself to do so.

End gushing.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

The Chaos Tower is near the ultimate in fanservice for Darkstalkers fans in terms of what it has. (Though it's missing Dee and Dark Talbain) and it's definitely a must have for fighting game fans with a PSP.

And yes, Darkstalkers is very much like Castlevania in that it uses horror monsters and creatures of legend, though while Castlevania does more of a serious mash up, Darkstalkers takes a more over-the-top route.  You have a zombie rockstar with a chainsaw, a kung fu werewolf, and all sorts of other colorful characters. It's really great, it's why I love it so much, even though I'm not very good at fighting games.

Time for me to downlo-errrrr 'procure' myself a copy of this.

The classic characters are awesome, but in the later games they added some odd choices, like Queen B (?) and B.B.Hood (??).  I don't get how these are monster-like, unless now we're going into FairyTales as well (and even then... Queen B?).

It's a pretty cool series, though.

This game is on my "to buy" list and has been so for a veeeery long time. My only question is; How comfortable is it to play fighting games on a PSP? I am not friends with that stick. But I'm gonna get it eventually. I've never played a Darkstalkers game in my life, even though I've known about it since the mid 90's. :(

It's not bad, but I don't use the stick for 'em.  I use the D-pad and deal with the calluses.
Still, it's not like I go online or anything.

I procured this title several years ago and I must say it is very interesting. I also find it easy enough to beat considering my low level of skills with beat-em ups.

Think of B.B. Hood as a reverse Frankenstein's monster, she looks sweet and innocent but she's actually a cold blooded mercenary. I don't question it too much, seeing Little Red Riding Hood shooting a machine gun is enough to sell me on the character. (I bought "Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ" on the DS for much the same reason.) As for Q-Bee/Queen B she's actually one of the more horrific characters if you know her story. Her giant race of bees devour almost anything, everything and anyone. Her eyes are actually at the top of her head, her human-like female form and face are just an illusion to lure in prey. Her winning cutscene shows her race thriving to the point that they risk dying of overpopulation.

And yeah Asploded Darkstalkers is one of my favorite series of all time. Definitely my favorite fighting series. Never played Chaos Tower as I don't have a PSP though.

B.B. Hood is actually meant to be one of the more "monstrous" of the entire roster. She represents humanity at its worst: ambitious and murderous, all under the disguise of cute and sweet.

Meanwhile, Q-Bee I think is a bit of a nod to the old Attack of the Killer Wasp Woman (or something similar to that regard) movie.

Yeah for a series where all or almost all the playable characters are monsters there's a healthy share of good guys. Wonder where B.B. Hood would fit into the "most evil" list. She might barely make into into the top 5 since I think the list would look something like this:
1. Jedah
2. Pyron
3. Demitri Maximoff (Mandatory Dracula figure and original supposed "main character", though he's been supplanted by Morrigan and/or Felicia for that title in most people's minds I think.)
4. Bishamon
5.?

Guess you could argue over who was more evil out of the other characters. Though a fair share of them are clearly good or at least not all that bad.
