I've always been a bit confused by the TurboGrafx-16 and lately I've had this crazy notion to get one just to play Rondo of Blood on legitimate hardware. Wouldn't be the first time I bought an expensive system to play a Castlevania game (I'm lookin' atchoo, PSP).

I just had some questions, primarily about which would be the best or least expensive model to get, whether there's any region locking, if the US or JP system has the better controller(s), and what kinda HuCard I'd need to play Rondo (assuming it doesn't come with the CD) and whether that also differs by region.

I believe the TurboDuo is the TG16/CD wrapped into one, I'm not sure what the Japanese equivalent to that is. Would Rondo play on a TD without any kind of converters or modifications?

Make sure you get the System 3 Card otherwise you won't get to play Rondo.
You'll instead get Akumajo Dracula PEKE. xD

Does that go in the HuCard slot or is it a different thing altogether?

The most convenient thing to do would be to shell out the cash for a Turbo Duo.
The Turbo Duo has native Hu-Card, Super CD-ROM2 support, and all that other good stuff, without having to get adapters.

Adapters would be what you would have to do to get the System Card to work on an US Turbo GFX16.  The JPN cards are cheaper than the USA cards, hence the adapter.

The best option is to get a Japanese TurboDuo.  Although Rondo of Blood (and all CD games for PC Engine, actually) doesn't have copy protection, if you're ever gonna play any other RPGs on your Duo, might want to get the Japanese one.

You can get a PC Engine or you could softmod an original xbox and play it through the PC Engine emulator. (That's what I did.)

Guys, he's asking about original hardware.  I am pretty sure he has either DXC or the Wii VirtualConsole.
There's no need to suggest those methods.  He wants to play it retro and legit.

I've searched Super Potato (the akiba store that sells a lot of retro games).
They have a PC engine duo (used) in stock.

Their prices are much more expensive than other store in Japan.
But, they don't sell outside of Japan. Just use this as a pricing guide.
