Yup, here we go again. The Dead Cells guys did a good job in their Castlevania content, so I'm hoping good things.

oh thank god it's confirmed for Switch.

the fact they're calling stages biomes is making me think this is procedurally generated...  disappointing, but, if it's by the guys who made Dead Cells, well, i can give them a pass.

and they still refuse to name Trevor's successor haha.  just let us agonize a little longer whether it is or is not Sonia.

No more pining for new entries, no more waiting and hoping. This is finally it. We've been asleep too long and waking up to this feels great!

This one looks and sounds pretty Netflixvania-inspired, from the visuals to the Paris setting (which the Awakening in the Moonlight stage musical also used, weirdly). For better or worse, I guess we should thank Frederator for spearheading a Castlevania revival and redefining it for a new generation.

I'd like to know who the protag is. She's prolly Trevor and Sypha's daughter, but prolly not named after the ones mentioned in that series bible fax.

It has that half baked comic book style that many modern 2D game developers have been using as an excuse to to push out sloppy unfinished background art, and also reminds me too much of the Netflix show. At this stage I think I'm just going to pass on it. I can always read the wiki or watch videos for any new lore.

I agree with that, but that's not the only thing that i find bugging me, it's very close close to how plays dead cells that i feel it has lost it's identity.

Don't get me wrong, i love Dead Cells, but i feel that this style is not the right one, from art to game play style.

I might be wrong, but from what i have seen so far i just don't get the Castlevania vibes. It feels so generic, but oh well, in the end it is what it is......

I don't know about that one chief, I'm excited to finally have a new game but it just feels so off. Maybe it's the discount anime art coupled with mono colored backgrounds and mostly black foreground that just make everything looks bland.

Not to derail, but where can I read more about the other projects? All I see is news about Belmont's Curse and an alleged 2025 AAA announcement that never happened.

Back to topic, I couldn't get into Dead Cells and I genuinely hate the art style here. Not looking like something I'll pick up at this point.

We’ve gone so long without a traditional Castlevania that babies that were born when Order of Ecclesia released can vote.

And STILL before GTA 6😂

It's probably not a roguelite because there are save rooms.

The visuals are incredibly mid, Konami being extremely risk-adverse probably gave the developers a minimal budget. Also, didn't Evil Empire and Motion Twin hate each other? I guess this project started right after the Dead Cell DLC but before they split?

It DOES look like Netflix, or at least consistent with the show, even the demons, what the fuck, I hate that. But the Castle is there and Dracula should too so it's just aesthetics.

One curator on Steam said the curse is a risk/reward mechanic. Ok...

Need to know more about the gameplay, how it feels, how good is the map and level design. But even if they execute everything perfectly it still won't be a real Castlevania. Unfortunately the Konami Castlevania studio simply doesn't exist anymore. What we have here still represents a noticeable progress for this series' revival but as long as they rely on outsiders to make the product, of course the games will have those developers' imprint and/or feel quite bland.

Products doesn't necessarily mean videogames. Knowing what Konami does with Yugioh anniversaries, this Castlevania's celebration will drag on for years, but it will consist mostly of merchandise and gadgets.

Great to see the CV Dungeon and diehard fans still here!

This is great news, this. Game looks really slick, loving these vibrant colours and the atmosphere. Seeing a lot of enemy variation, including a lot of the original classics. Love that whip swinging is being used as a regular gameplay mechanic. Also adore the classic logo return too and Belmont's Revenge vibe.

Have played a lot of indie Metroidvanias in the intervening years and hoping that doesn't dilute my experience here, but it does look a cut above visually.

The Castlevania 40th Anniversary Overture video is cool. It shows an eclipse.

The contrast between this and the Belmont's Curse trailer is incredible. The mood, the style, the horror imagery. You can immediately recognize it as something that was made by Konami themselves rather than outsourced.

Extremely grim.

At least when Capcom outsources Megaman it's to inticreates, which is made of ex-capcom employees. But MegaMan 11 was made in house, very craft oriented. I remember videos about the foley work that went into it, and stuff like that.

Also good to know that password reset does not work. never sends an email. Had to wait till I got home where the password is saved.

honestly, considering the whole creature of chaos ever shifting thing, its amazing it didnt happen sooner. though I guess now that I think about it, metroidvanias kind of predate the popularity boom of things like rogue legacy and other roguelikes, which makes me feel old to think.

Ok, i have mixed feelings. For starters, i'm really pushed back by the visuals, and the overall production quality looks very low. It also reminds me a lot of the netflix series design-wise, which isn't a good thing at all. Gameplay-wise, it looks pretty cool, and it should hopefully be very fun to play and with some interesting new bits of lores for the some of the blank decades in the original timeline (btw, very good they are sticking with the original timeline  / universe). I'll get it and enjoy for what it is, an indie game Castlevania wannabe. Now on the silver lining notes: I like to think this is the low budget project they have to kickstart the whole 40th Anniversary thing, and we're eventually getting a new announcement with a bigger scale-in house developed japanese title, with similar vibes to the Ouverture video they posted on the Anniversary page, which really gets the vibe both in music and visual of what I'd expect a new Castlevania to be. Pretty excited to be honest. Hoping for a 3d collection as well.

On an interesting note, it seems we're back to the unified regions title, the game bears the same name in the Japanese trailer, and even Trevor retains his western name.

Ok, I've been reading up more on this, and I'm cautiously optimistic. I don't mind the new art style. According to the site you're some girl Belmont, maybe a new retelling of Sonia or someone entirely new. These guys aren't following past timelines I'm sure, so they can do what they want. I'm curious what the Belmont curse is though. I just hope it's something appropriate and not that they're actually vampires or some kind of monster. Personally, I always thought the Belmonts were cool because they were holy warriors and I've always had a soft spot for Paladins. Anywho, I hope the curse is appropriate.

As for other projects mentioned, I doubt it would happen, but I would crap twinkies (you read that right) if the team that made Infernax made a Castlevania game. I thought that game was great and the game play was the perfect balance of leveling up but still keeping that retro feel. It was like Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2 combined.

I bet the Belmont curse has to do with that stuff on the protagonist's arm, it looks like a demonic infection or something.

I didn’t think about it at first but since Order of Ecclesia, Castlevania has been the go to for Metroidvania’s with very few games in that sub genre. Fast forward today now there’s hundreds of Metroidvanias released on a regular bases (even Metroid came back), some of which are very good and on par with IGA’s best efforts. I do wonder can the father of the genre stack up to its many sons?

Agreed.  There is some great stuff out there and given the saturation of games in the genre it’s going to have to be very special indeed to really stand out.  I had an absolute ball with the recent Silksong for example (despite some dissenting opinions on the game), and I don't think I've played a more polished or rewarding game.

With Dead Cells, I enjoyed it, but I thought the balance was a bit off (DPS seemed off and enemies scaled differently to the player–it felt more about scroll management than the gameplay).  I hope Belmont’s Curse is straight out-and-out action and avoids scaling levels.  Or, if Konami has injected some serious cash, it has given the devs extra time to add balance (and polish).  I will say I thought the Rogue Prince of Persia feel quite tight and well balanced overall.

I see the term ‘biomes’ mentioned on the website so it may be like CVIII/Rondo/Dead Cells and offers branching paths.  I see nothing wrong with that as it will offer replayability.  I hope they can join them up more seamlessly and doesn’t create jarring environment changes.

What is good is these devs have invested considerable time and effort in their work and seem dedicated and passionate about their work.  I think we can see that already in the trailer footage. I think they’ll nail the French setting: both devs involved are Bordeaux-based companies, and already the video footage shows moody medieval Parisian environments (if somewhat colourful, but it keeps it relevant with modern audiences).

It looks gorgeous.

I was dismissing this at first, then I realized the 40th Anniversary Overture video also kinda feels like a teaser (for another game).
If that's the case then Belmont's Curse would be the «Mirror of Fate» of a new generation of games.
The AAA game rumors at this point could be real but honestly, I can't see myself liking it. It would be either a soulslike (fucking Silent Hill...) or another hack and slash. No thanks.

It does have a somewhat generic-looking quality to the graphics but honestly after Grimoire of Souls what did y’all expect lol. There was no chance in hell it would’ve resembled Slain: Back from Hell or Blasphemous.

My wishes for Belmont's Curse.

-You get something from breaking candles/lanterns so they have a purpose.
-There is more than 1 whip and they play differently. Personally I think Valmont Whip and Morning Star were very fun in Dead Cells. They had the mechanic of making the tip of the whip make way more damage.
-Alternatively, I hope we can upgrade the Vampire Killer in different ways, allowing a more "classic" playstyle with simple, linear attacks like in past Castlevania games.
-The story makes sense and doesn't contradict any Castlevania lore.
-There seems to be no contact damage. Therefore I hope the enemies aggressively react to Belmont trying to dash through them rather than just standing there like idiots. They need to be real obstacles and the level design must take them into account.
-Trevor Mode/skin

And if Belmont's Curse isn't the only game we are getting...

-A pixel art Classicvania done by other devs. For example the guys who did Curse of the Moon, but there are lots of viable choices here. It's cheap to make, works on every platform and takes less than a year of development.
-a 3D remake of Castlevania III. Trevor's story never got a remake unlike Simon's, and it's a very viable choice in my opinion because with Trevor/Sypha/Alucard/Grant you could potentially make happy both the classic fans and the Netflix fans. With Alucard being the elephant in the room, you can't do a full Castlevania relaunch without including playable Alucard somewhere (and it can't be in Belmont's Curse because he is slumbering in Romania). I have no idea how the game should play though. Out of all the 3D iterations of the series, I only liked the N64 games.
-Harmony of Despair release for Steam. If successful, this would be the Trojan Horse to bring back the SOTN/GBA/NDS gameplay and perhaps Igarashi ;D

I feel at least one of these will happen in some shape or form, especially a 3D triple A outing . Would be awesome if "This is the beginning of numerous new products around Castlevania." means we'll get more than one new game with different development teams in charge, much like Konami already did with Silent Hill starting 2024.

I came here to post with the expectation that my opinion would be unpopular. But it looks like others have some of the same reservations I do.

Honestly... I don't feel as optimistic as I should. I've seen so many things dragged out of mothballs and gotten excited only to see it get ruined by people who think they know better. Most of the time it's a monkey's paw scenario.

It looks less like Castlevania and more like a game that pays homage to Castlevania. And I get the sinking feeling that the Netflix show might've informed its storytelling and aesthetic. That doesn't inspire confidence. Also, yet another female protagonist in an era that doesn't know how to properly make them.

I want to like it. I want to be wrong. But we'll just have to wait and see.

I just could not be less pumped. I don't like Dead Cells—like, at all. And even if Belmont's Curse isn't rogue-ish in any way, I'm still completely put off by the cheap art style.

Here's to hoping future Castlevania "products" are in hands that excite me more; the devs of Infernax, The Last Faith or even FromSoftware would be welcome.

Does anyone know what her previous works look like?

Open structure + 25 characters + subquests + branching dialogues seems like they are being a little too ambitious for the studio's first metroidvania...

That said, Konami should give another task to M2. Haunted Castle Revisited was cool.

I'd give my left nut to have the Blasphemous devs do a Castlevania game, those guys are pixel art GODS.

I wouldn't be mad at that. Blasphemous was a good game with one nitpick from me: thebacktracking kind of got tedious after a while. Just the way they did maps made traversing feel like a slog sometimes.

But they did a great job on Ninja Gaiden Ragebound. That game was super fun.

If this really marks the Castlevania IP is able to open the gate of Hell again, I wouldn't be too disturbed to expect a Castlevania IP take from Team Ladybug (Touhou Luna Nights, Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, Blade Chimera, Pharaoh Rebirth, ...) or Bombservice (Momodora Series, ...) It's mostly just my nothing burger but I wanna see how they could deal with if one of the two particular teams somehow received fund in the same tier of Konami IP's treatment.

I'm surprised all the new Castlevania info isn't on the front of the main website.
It's still got some info from 2021 on there.

Kurt told me he'd be writing something on there.

Oh thank God. That was my biggest concern going into this. Dead Cells is amazing, but I really don't like Roguelikes.

YES. I'm also glad it's not a roguelike. Stuff like Rogue Legacy 2 was really fun, but I was really hoping for this to not go that course.

We got more details during the Triple-I showcase initiative.

-Double rapiers, spear and brass knuckles are available as weapons.
-Main way to heal is via rechargeable flasks like Dark Souls/Blasphemous etc.
-The "corrupted french knight" boss is Joan d'Arc. She becomes hostile after the main character reveals herself as a Belmont. Joan genuinely believes that the Belmont clan communed with evil and dark forces.
-The "werewolf" goes by the alias of The Fallen. The mc meets him early in the game and he appears to be as startled as Joan.
-Venice, specifically during the Carnival was the first idea for the setting, then they switched to Paris because they know it better.
-Dracula is going to be in the game and the events that lead to its resurrection are going to be quite unique.
-The team and Taniguchi stated that the story is inspired by Dracula's Curse, being some sort of continuation. The whip gameplay by SC IV, but they wanted to make it feel more "modern". The level design by SOTN. Curse of Darkness has also been mentioned. No mention of the Netflix show whatsover.
-No release date yet

(My theory) It seems like they want to expand Trevor's backstory and how he became the last surviving member of his clan.
Perhaps they want to give Transylvanian people a real reason to fear the Belmonts. Some of Trevor's family/ancestors could have done some seriously heinous acts and tainted the entire clan's reputation during the early 1400s or even earlier (Joan died in 1430). It is possible that The Fallen is a Belmont lost to darkness and left for dead. This also links back to the mc's curse, but why is it manifesting 23 years after CVIII? Is Trevor affected too?

I don't know, the music sounds like total garbage. The candlestick also dropping the same item as the zombie (coffee?) rather than hearts or money is weird but w/e.

Could be the same artist as the Lords of Shadow games?

Also State of Play got announced for June 2nd, probably we'll get more news then.
Every 3 days the official Twitter is posting short clips about game contents but it's mostly stuff of little significance, like "Bats are going to be in the game".

Glad it's not Sonia, let's leave her in her timeline, no need to rewrite/remake a character that has fans out there.

This trailer was a good watch, they definitely put a lot on effort on respecting the lore. Acknowledging Grant, CoD Isaac, Carmilla with the OG Mask, Rose directly quoting Leon. If the rest of the game keeps nailing Castlevania spirit like that, we're in for a good time. Some of the Castle rooms also look very nice.

I'm still not sure about certain gameplay choices and the never-ending flashing screen effects however.

Do we know what the curse is yet?

Great to see Isaac, wonder how his trip to hell has gone.  Interesting to think of him as a potentially continually resurrected enemy alongside other recurring bosses.

Someone mentioned Grant - I didn’t pick up on any Grant references - what was that?  He didn’t get his own costume that I noticed at least, despite Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard all getting one.

Of course have to wonder about Hector and Julia.

Looking forward to Tarot card mechanism.  Always loved the Circle of the Moon cards and the tarot cards remind me of the Death Bloodlines cards.  Wonder if the fortune teller type is a reference to anyone, or someone new.

Not thrilled with the overall art, but hoping it will grow on me.  I’ll have to wait for it to come out on Switch.  Being able to play this in handheld mode is just too juicy.  I’m hoping I can get away with not needing to buy a PS5 before the next CV that’s not available on Switch 1/2 comes out - I want to wait for the PS6 to come out.

As for Rose!=Sonia, I’d prefer it was Sonia, unless they figure out a way to actually make Sonia Trevor’s mother someday.  I guess I’ll hold out for that possibility and just be satisfied that Rose seems inspired by her (though you could just come up with her design by adding trevor and sypha alone).  Probably best the character not be tied to Sonia, even if I’m disappointed.

I think I saw something like “Trevor Style” and “Sypha Style”, which I’m guessing is more like the various modes of Circle of the Moon where you just concentrate on a given gaming mechanic without otherwise changing the character or gameplay, with the costumes just being there to help get you in the groove.  Hope you can get those costumes without a preorder.

It’ll be fun to see the first chronological appearance of Carmilla.  Wonder if we’ll learn anything special about her background.

She said "mother, father and their allies" and I just assumed she meant Alucard and Grant.

Yeah. This game seems to be in the base continuity rather than the netflix one, so I see no reason they wouldnt include Grant if only as a shoutout.

wonder if she'll have to face the fake sypha/trevor/grant trio =o.  that's one way to sneak in a direct grant reference.

i also wonder if they had to make a long trip from Wallachia to help out the folks in Paris.  if they were in wallachia for a long time, maybe Grant was "uncle grant" to Rose growing up.  (assuming Grant, the rebuilder of Wallachi, would have stayed there for as long as possible)

Another few random thoughts about the Belnades.  The Belmont in Rose seems pretty strong, but what about the Belnades?  Does she have any elemental magic at her disposal?  If not, might explain why Belnades power is so rare in the Belmont Clan.  I suppose there "is" a Sypha style, but how much of it is in her normal style?  Wonder if that fortune teller was related to the Belnades Clan.  Also, I've long had a theory that the Mysterious Woman from Simon's Quest was Sypha.  Here we're at least seeing another Belmont afflicted with Dracula's Curse (now they're calling it Dracula's Curse in addition to Belmont's Curse, ha), so it would seem likely an ancestor of his would know all about it.  Didn't Hector transmute Dracula's Curse though?  Wonder what's afflicting Rose then and if it ties in with that event some how.  Maybe Isaac delivered a big old dose of Dracula's Curse into Trevor when he nearly stabbed him to death.  I suppose if she was born after Curse of Darkness Rose would be about 18-19 at most.

Considering what the gnarly voice "What makes you yhink you can stop me this time?" (Death?) and the female voice "God has given you another chance Rose" say, I think Trevor and Rose fucked up and were defeated at the start of the game. And this is how she got the curse perhaps. However it is stated to be Dracula's Curse and Dracula only shows up later.

We've got the first real gameplay video, it was taken down by the author but you can find it on this channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BH2nVEdFGw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BH2nVEdFGw) EDIT: this one was killed too.

-3 Relics can be equipped. No armor pieces apparently.
-the stats are seemingly only ATK and DEF.
-7 weapon categories. It looks like there's 4 weapons in each of them, starting with "Ordinary" weapons, for a total of 28 weapons. Swords, greatswords, whips, rapiers, lances/spears, fighting gloves, and short sword + shield.
-A deeper look into Arcana tarot cards. Only one of them can be equipped at a time.
(click to show/hide)
There's a perk system and subquests (for example defeat a number of enemies in a certain way) to gain points and upgrade those spells. Each defeated boss will grant you the card, a spell, a progression/movement ability, and often their weapon too.
(click to show/hide)
-You don't start with the Vampire Killer, that's in Trevor's pocket of course. It's not clear yet why Rose and her father go separate ways because the intro isn't shown in full.

I'm not sold on the gameplay, having lots of weapon options is cool but is there more depth to the system? Are the 3 relics enough to make different "builds"? Both in systems and in gameplay it looks more similar to Blasphemous I and II than Igavanias.
The writing seemed passable to me, but it is worrisome that not even 2 minutes in and they are already depicting the Bishop as greedy. I hope the Church isn't the villain or a negative force like in the Netflix series.
(click to show/hide)
There are also some worries that Rose might be the only child Trevor had, which would break the Lament of Innocence family tree, but we don't know yet.

More videos and reviews from journalists who were asked to play the demo are popping up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v2nOfQiEjk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v2nOfQiEjk)
Konami made them play the game in a deconsecrated church in Paris apparently.

(click to show/hide)

-The game is going to be fucking easy according to what Taniguchi said. "Difficulty modifiers" (according to Kotaku) allow to customize the experience. Note that the journalist used the modifiers because he couldn't beat the first boss (why are you even a gaming journalist?). So we only know that they can be used to make the game easier, but it is reasonable to think that they can also make it harder.
-According to the Famitsu interview it was Konami to ask Evil Empire to use Trevor's daughter as the protagonist

I honestly approve. I would rather each player get to tailor the difficulty to whatever they want rather than have a big damn group decision get made for everyone. That way everyone actually has fun, which I will go to my grave insisting is the primary and immutable purpose of a game.
