Have any of you noticed that in the cannon all female characters on the side of good seem to be some type of mage while the male characters all seem to be warriors? Sure the male characters use magic, but they fight like warriors. Where as the female characters seem to rely completely on magic.
Am I wrong?

Well... It just makes sense. Males have a much higher level of natural physical strength and endurance. The whole female warrior thing has always struck me as kind of odd. Did you know that the world champion female boxer was easily defeated by an average male fighter? He wasn't even that good in his circuit... I'm sure I'll be called sexist for all this, but it's the truth. Men are far better suited to the warrior role.

Tell that to the Amazons and watch as they enjoy eating your entrails.

The amazons were mythology. Silly mythology at that. I know this is a video game, but I was talking in general, bringing in fictional references does little to argue against my point.

Why not use fictional references for a fictional game? :o

Suspension of disbelief my friend. you should not have to do it tooooo much, or it ruins any form of fiction. Making a female able to fight all sorts of monster without magic is to much in the face of Dracula, werewolves, mummies, and what not.
-
In Reply To #8
Considering vampires generally have more speed, powers and magic than a normal human being, a man shouldn't be able to stand up to them either, and yet they do. I don't see how a sex change is going too far.
-
In Reply To #9
Depends on how much stronger they are. And even so, a well skilled man would fare better in a fight. I have my own little theory on how the Belmont's do what they do. It involves generations of development.
I kind of saw it like this, each Belmont teaches their son everything they know. When there son becomes the next Vampire Killer, he goes out and learns new things. Then teaches everything his father taught him + what he learned on his own to his son. That way the keep learning new fighting styles, weapons, acrobatics, occult information, etc... That way each generation becomes better. And figuring how it is at least a 12-13 year training process, the amount learned is vitually limitless. Power and strength will get you far, but if it works this way by the time Trevor fought dracula (not to mention after) they had aqcuired so much fighting skill, training technique, weapoinry skills, knowledge, etc... that they would be able to stand against a seemingly unstoppable foe.
-
A skilled woman can do as good, it depends on how they lived, if they trained, raw talent, and other such things. I don't doubt that a man can get stronger than a woman, I think its proven somewhere too. But I don't see how a woman character should be completely discarded in a fictional story. It definitely isn't any more believable that only a guy can be a warrior.
There are female fighters in the past. Not a whole lot, but there are some.

Stop putting words in my mouth. I am not scared or appalled or anything by it. i just think it doesn't make much sense. Males are better suited to be warriors, it is just a fact. Look at history, and see the ratio. And underlining that part means you just don't understand what i am saying or are just using this because you have nothing else. You always have suspension of disbelief in fiction, but that does not mean anything unrealistic works. In Castlevania it is set up like this...
The real world, BUT monsters and magic are real. That in no way altars the likelyhood of female warriors. Males and Females are suited to different thing in every species that has both sexes. In humans, fighting, and just about every skill applied to warriors is more suited towards males. Calling me sexist for that is like calling me sexist for saying all male dogs are on top during sex. I don't think men are any better than women, but you're fooling yourself if you think women are just as able in everything as men, and vice versa.
And fiction with human vs. vampire has been around for literally thousands of years. Wanna hit a little closer to home? Read any Conan (the inspiration for the belmont's) stories (by Robert E. Howard) He fights monsters, vampires, and all kinds of magical things without magic. Castlevania doing this is nothing new.

...i just think it doesn't make much sense.
-
No, it's not an opinion. I am talking about a 99% of males vs. 99% of females. Of course there are exceptions, there are exceptions in everything. Posting a pic of sophitia means nothing, she can fight people like Astoroth and nightmare because... Namco says so.
And need I remind you that she was beaten by cervantes/soul edge in soul blade. And who was the one to kill cervantes/sou edge siegfried. Ya...
If you take any male or female at birth and raise them for physical prowess, the male will be better suited to it. it's just basic genetics. males build muscle much faster, and much more effieciently than females. Saying the only thing one can do and the other can't is child birth IS SEXIST. Yes males can't give birth, but you are only dealing in absolutes. I did not say males can do this famels can't. I made it insanely clear that males are MUCH BETTER SUITED to being warriors. My reference about the boxer is good enough. The best female boxer in the world was effortlessly beaten by an average male boxer. What more proof is needed?
It's just nature man, males are better at some things, females are better at some things. Some species (elephants come to mind) have stronger more able fighting females. Humans, just aren't one of them it is the reverse.
And no... you really just don't understand the principle behind suspension of disbelief. just because there are monsters and magic does not mean that a woman would be any more capable physically than a man. Any man who had gone through at least one fourth of her physical training would easily surpass her because males just build muscle faster, and can build more of it.
I am sure the Belmont's use some magical items, but overall they were supposed to be physical warriors. And like I said with the Conan reference, stories with non magical beings defeating magical ones has been around long before this series.
My point being this... Yes, a female could be a warrior (it's rare but like I said, there are always exceptions). But fact is, a male warrior would be better suited. Men are better at some things, Women are better at some things. Strength, fighting, and almost all physical exertions are things males just excel at far more than females.
-
The problem with your "argument" is it has nothing to do with the topic. You're still not explaining how it's unrealistic to have warrior women, when you consider all the ridiculous things that we're supposed to believe in say Castlevania.
And there is no way you have fucking tested 99% of either sex to make that statement.
Also where's the proof of this boxer thing?
Also, I posted Sophitia because that art is gorgeous. And also Cervantes was possessed by the power of Soul Edge. Maybe Siegfried was chosen by the sword because his resolve is weaker? Afterall HE became Nightmare. Also, Cassandra wishes she were as cool as her big sister.
Also don't you learn anything from martial arts? It's not about the strength: it's about the efficiency in which a given person's body is used. Since boxing has strict rules, I'm not sure it's the best place to compare.
My point is: this really is a subjective argument and you're trying to make it fact. Especially since the definition of warrior is always changing.
-
you don't really use martial arts to swing a sword that's as large as your body though. :P :o
-
What? Cloud doesn't know martial arts. Remember? Zach did everything.
And BTW, real martial artists don't have to.
-
yeah but i mean, stereotypical videogame warriors always use large swords or axes. you don't use martial arts to wield those.
-
My god, did Sophitia's breast grow like 100 inches or something? Those are gonna sag like mad in the future games >.>

I am merely stating why I prefer males in the role of warrior. I don't think it destroys the series if they make if female. And you still are not understanding the principal of suspension of disbelief. It is far easier to swallow a huge jacked armored man fighting werewolves and vampires than a woman. Unless there is magic, and in that case it doesn't matter. I will find the youtube clip of the boxing match, and I don't have to test 99%, it is a known fact that men are superior in almost all physical activity to women. Do you really not know this? It does matter which man and which woman you're talking about, but there will never, has never been a time when the most able fighter in any region was a woman. It's just one thing men are genetically superior in. Both sexes have superior qualities in every species. Denying this is arguing against nature.
And about Siegfried... Sou Edge did not "choose him" it tried to kill him, it chose Cervantes, Siegfried defeated it.
And he had much MUCH more resolve than Sophitia. He WILLINGLY killed hundreds with Soul Edge before becoming Nightmare in a deal with the sword to resurrect his father. Even though taking lives hurt him extremely badly, he had the resolve to do what he thought he had to to revive his father.
-
Oh, so Siegfried's a total ass then? Who the fuck kills 100s just to selfishly revive their father? Also I musta been thinking about Soul Calibur then. That's when Siegfried becomes Nightmare.
Also, yeah it seems all the women's breasts in SC just get bigger and bigger. As much as I like the art itself, the proportioning system this artist is going by is getting ridiculous even for anime. Sophitia never had a rack like that before, and unless what she eats is all going to her boobs, it makes no sense that she looks like that now.
It's hard for me not to call his art gratuitously sexist now. He not only has them wear less with each outing, he grows their breasts so they popout even more outrageously from what little cloth is already there. And you really need no more proof than how he has Taki's nipples poke through her spandex (let alone that this is a Japanese woman with a double-D cupsize).
I bet the only thing Sophitia is crying about in that picture is how bad her back hurts. O_O
At least Hilde and Ashlotte have decent outfits.
-

He killed his father, and went insane from it. Siegfried is crazy from soul blade, all the way through Legends, up to the end of Soul Calibur. He does become nightmare at the end of Soul Blade, but in Legends it explains that the sword did not take him over until a while later.
And yes, the breasts are getting insane, Ivy, and Taki are the craziest.

Alexc2808, please stop misstating your own chauvinistic opinions as genuine facts, or at least come up with some cites to back them.

Yes I prefer it. But it is a fact that it makes more sense. You need look no further than history.
-
In Reply To #27
Saying it is a fact that men have a superior genetic ability to build muscle is not sexist. Please don't attack me. I have stated over and over that i do not think either sex is better. I say they both have traits better than the other. That's not sexist, it's just the truth.
-
In Reply To #29
But it doesn't rule them out. When you say something like "more realistic" about a sex doing something better in a game with vampires and werewolves, it doesn't make much sense.
-
In Reply To #30
Yes it does make sense. And the reason it rules them out is because there is no way the best warrior in an area would be female, when every attribute of warriors is something that males naturally exceed in. Now, if the mission were to settle the problem with compassion and understanding, a woman would be far better suited to the task than a man. Suspension of disbelief. I've already clarified my point probably 5 times, and you don't even reply to it. People just keep saying the same thing.
-
From Wikipedia:
Suspension of disbelief is an aesthetic theory intended to characterize people's relationships to art. It was coined by the poet and aesthetic philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1817. It refers to the willingness of a person to accept as true the premises of a work of fiction, even if they are fantastic or impossible. It also refers to the willingness of the audience to overlook the limitations of a medium, so that these do not interfere with the acceptance of those premises. According to the theory, suspension of disbelief is a quid pro quo: the audience tacitly agrees to provisionally suspend their judgment in exchange for the promise of entertainment.
Are you not entertained? ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?! So why don't you just shut up about it already.
Why don't you just use suspension of disbelief the next time you feel threatened by a woman's prescence as a warrior in a work of fiction. Again, if you can accept a flying Medusa Head, it should be no problem to accept the former.
-
In Reply To #31
The problem is, that's not a rule that needs to be abided by in a videogame at all. You're attempting to use genetics to explain sociological gender roles.
The line blurs a bit too much for others when it comes to the fantasy realms of video games. It seems it's pretty cut 'n dry for you, though. And that's a matter of opinion since no one can settle video game laws and rules except the developers. If they want the warrior to be the best and female, all they have to do is design it that way, and there go your rules out the window.

Stop putting words in my mouth. i never said I was offended by it. I have made it as clear as possible that I just prefer a male in the role because it makes far more sense, vampires or not. And according to you antraxx it would be ok if a duck was the main character in cv because some people could except it for the sake of a game.
Exactly Jorge( I even pointed this out with Sophitia), I don't know how to make it any clearer that this is just my preferance, and I was simply giving the vast amount of reasons for this. People are far to quick to jump and scream sexist in todays world. I don't think men are any better than women, or vice versa... I'm not a sexist.
-
We need a "suspension of disbelief"-counter. I would make one, but I'm too lazy.
-
In Reply To #34
I don't think you're sexist... but I do think you have a rather rigid rationale for "Suspension of Disbelief".
I ran into a similar argument just a few days ago. If I may draw the anecdote:
I told someone I did not dig Naruto because my idea of what a "Ninja" is, and the connotations brought about by "Bright Orange Jumpsuit and Blonde Hair" are far too extreme of opposites for me to take seriously as a Ninja Anime.
He countered that in an anime where people are having all sorts of gnarly powers, the barrier of suspension of disbelief is pretty much shattered from the start. Then he countered that I have no problem with doublejumping superflying characters in Castlevania... ...it did not go well from there on down. Let's just say the guy calls me a "Christian" now for some reason. Something about logic and my not abiding by it, etc. No biggie.
So yeah, I think there's some things we can all tolerate in some media, while not in others. I can't see people doublejumping without it being explained away somehow, if it were, say, a movie, but I can see it in a game. You cannot see a supreme champion warrior being female unless it's possibly explained away somehow (Steroids? lol I kid, I kid).
I will say that I can easily see a female warrior. But hey, we're all different people. You explained your rationale and, while it makes sense in this reality, in videogame reality it would take a bit for you to get accustomed to it.
-
In Reply To #36
But it would be crazy if all of a sudden you saw some guy walking down a street all of a sudden perform a double, or super jump.
But as far as video games go, anything, I say anything, can go. Alex's points may apply to real life, but video games are as real to real life as cartoons are.
-
In Reply To #37
Believe it or not... suspension of disbelief rarely applies to reality. ::)
-
In Reply To #38
Why are you bringing real life statistics into a work of fiction. I don't see how you can suspend beliefs in medusa heads flying around, but not suspend the belief of a woman warrior, which is BY FAR more probable.
-
In Reply To #39
The most important thing about suspension of dis-belief is that you should only have to apply it to a few things. Allowing yourself to accept monsters covers madusa, dracula, wolf man, fank etc...
This is why a lot of movies fail (Van Helsing is a prime example of this). When you start having to accept multiple things it gets to a point that is to much. Just because you accept Medusa doesn't mean anything goes. By your argument it would be okay to have Mickey Mouse storm the gates of Castlevania, i mean it's already not the real world. ::)
-
In Reply To #40
It would be okay, cept for the fact that the story would probably suck. Since mickey mouse is a happy do good type of character. Unless you change him, then it wouldn't be mickey mouse any more. Having a different sex for a character does not alter the story in that fashion.
-
In Reply To #41
Saying it would be ok for mickey mouse, even citing it would be a bad story really makes your opinion on this matter very very questionable.
Seriously, just because it is fantasy does not mean anything goes.
-
In Reply To #42
I never said anything goes, that's why I think Mickey Mouse would do poorly. But I don't understand how you think changing a person's sex will be such a dramatic change like Mickey Mouse, since you obviously think so by referencing that its the same.
-
In Reply To #43
I did not say it was the same, I said by the logic you were bringing up you could have mickey mouse as the hero. Because your argument was that this is fantasy and has medusa, so how could anything not fit.
-
It's not about just anything not fitting. It's about a female warrior. Is that so far-fetched? Female warriors actually exist, despite the fact that they are more often than not weaker than males that had the same training. "Special" female warriors in games, stronger then men, are not far-fetched at all.
-
In Reply To #44
No, I never said that why would not anything fit, thats putting words into my mouth. I only said that a change of sex would not have the huge impact you seem to think it does, and that if you can suspend the beliefs in a flying medusa head, you shouldn't be surprised by a woman warrior.
A woman warrior would not make it into a kids game, would still be able to do things a man can do, and even in your "history" there has been woman warriors. Not much, I'm sure, but there has been. (I can only honestly think of one famous one, right now.)
-
In Reply To #46
There have been women warriors yes, but in EVERY CASE there was a male warrior that was superior. Even Joan of arc (who was not a warrior, she was more like a mascot) had her own troupe of male warriors around her at all times in battle.
-
A mere mascot doesn't earn a place in the history books. What a fucking disrespectful thing to say.
You really are starting to dig a grave for yourself here. With every post in this topic you peel another layer off what you really think.

She did almost no fighting, she just marched in to pump up the troops, she was a mascot.
Saying god and saints talk to you = nut job.
Saying mascot like characters dont make it into the history books is just wrong, she was a figurehead. A symbol, a mascot.
All she managed to do was steal the glory from real heroes who fought and gave there lives for there country.
-
In Reply To #49
See, now you're just bringing your religion or lack thereof into it.
You don't have to fight to be a "hero." But I don't think there were any records of her fighting or not fighting in the battles. I could be wrong, and feel free to name a resource saying so. There are mentions of her sustaining wounds and still returning to battle, I don't really read up on her, so I don't know the finer details, but hey, sustaining wounds but still returns to battle and leading an army successfully is better than most men in my book.
-
Not to mention she was climbing a tower when she sustained it. She was either leading the fucking siege, or at least in the thick of it.

Saying mascot like characters dont make it into the history books is just wrong, she was a figurehead.

-
Innuendos aside, Sonia would just go into Burning mode and Simon can't touch her. It's a backup chastity belt when her main one fails.
Also she'd take any sub-weapons he threw at her and turn them into useless collectables.
That or she'd trick him into breaking a trap-candle, and the rest writes itself.
-
she can use burning mode once per stage. simon can use laurels as long as he has hearts.
hence, simon beats sonia. her invincibility will wear off eventually and then she's fucked. when simon's does he'll just reactivate it, then proceed to whip her into submission.
-
Simon is not the legend he is, because he is that strong. He is, because he has no powerful special abilities, or anything and still fights his way through Dracula's castle. I mean... He doesn't even run, or anything. He just walks smoothly through it and whips everything. But still Sonia would probably win with her rage of the titans.
-
a titan can't hope to even scratch an incarnation of a god though.
simon had no special abilities to kill dracula few times, during one of which he was greatly weakened and dying. sonia needed super powers pulled out of her ass and be in top shape to be able to beat him once.
this makes simon more badass and powerful by default. :o
-
Wow, holy thread derailment Batman!
Try to get back on the topic...

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Boudicia yet, She roughed up the roman legions and made the emperor of the time consider even removing all the forces of rome from our island due to the revolt

Alexc2808, did you ever take into account the suppression of women throughout history? Many of them weren't allowed to do things a man could do. They were expected to raise kids and cook, do the laundry, etc. If they were allowed throughout history to be equal to men, I'd bet money there would be more female "warriors" to debunk your load of crap.
Quit saying you aren't sexist, it's like a racist saying "but I have black friends"!

Yes, and your point is....? Write to konami and see if they can get the licencing rights to put Xena Warrior Princess as a playable character in the next game.
-
Men are naturally born with more muscle mass, but that doesn't make men the ultimate warriors. Being a soldier/warrior needs so much more than just muscles. I believe there are tons of women who could fight a lot better than men.
It's not all about physical strength. It's a lot about courage, technique, mental strength, etc. In japan there's a martial art called Aikido which doesn't even include using any kind of physical strenght. Instead you use grips and techniques to turn your opponents strength against him/her. In such a situation, a tiny girl skilled with the art of aikido, could easily take down the strongest man on the planet.
-
I do kendo and I get pwnt by girls.
-
not if the strongest man cut her in half with a large sword before she had a chance to reach and grab him. ;D
the force of the sword slash would also be very big considering it'd be the strongest man on earth, so she wouldn't have enough strength to block it in any way, much less grab, which would cut her arms off/into pieces. :o
almost every warrior guy in cv has a sword or another weapon of some sort, plus this is cv, not japanvania so no asian martial arts in medieval europe plz. :(

who? never heard such name. :P
she used the soul powers which were pretty much magic, so was her busty mode. :o
-
He said all CANON characters. Sonia was retconned, and isn't canon anymore.
I also thank whoever posted the picture of Sophitia, the sheer size of those things make me laugh everytime.
It's a fact that most men are more able to become fit as a warrior than women. However, if the women is say, more determined or trains more, she can become better than him. It's just a question of potential and who reaches it. The Amazons for example, in their ideal society taught them selves and trained as warriors. It was easy to become a warrior and they constantly became stronger, making them very good warriors.
If you put them against untrained warriors, they would rape the hell out of them. It's like putting a monkey against a human, and you train the monkey how to drive a golf cart, and let it learn the track, but leave the human totally untrained as to driving. The monkey would win despite it have a disadvantage in something like that. *is not comparing women to monkeys*
And like someone had said previously, think of the time periods most games are in. A female training as a warrior was rare, and so it would be a lot easier to train as a practicioner of magic.
-

Like I said Sophitia>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Cassandra. 8)
But Sophitia became a mommy; that's the only reason she stepped out of the lime light long enough for Cassandra to take her main character roster spot. Now Sophitia remains an unlockable each time :(
It should be the other way around. I mean, Sophitia could have Voldo watch the kids (since he's good at watching things with his blindness). I guess her no-good husband is too drunk to.

The amazons were mythology. Silly mythology at that. I know this is a video game, but I was talking in general, bringing in fictional references does little to argue against my point.
Actually you're wrong. About two years ago about 2-3 years ago some diggers found remains of an Amazon woman who had died in battle and they have actually found an orphan child who was adopted who turned out to be the great great great....etc grandchild of this woman. So in reality this little girl is the last of the Amazonian tribes.
This was actually on the local news here in Missouri. So your point is proven false. Have a nice time playing.

Still want warrior girls?, i dont think that warrior women can be hot or at least they arent my type =/... I preffer them like mages
Any case Nathan was a kind of mage with the card things and Alucard looks more like a spellcaster than warrior
-
What makes you think that a warrior girl can't be hot while a mage girl can?
They can't look like Anna Kournikova? And why not? She's fit and can probably kick your butt too.
Alucard may look like a Spell Caster to you, but he definitely ain't a spell caster. If anything, both him and Nathan are Mage-Knights.
-
Considering how your average Japanese student can bring down the house, albeit with soul absorbing, I'd assume pretty warrior girls could.
I mean it's Soma, he IS a warrior girl. :V
lololol
-
No those are weight pushin chicks... bodybuilders. Warrior chics would be buff but lean and slim cause all theirs would be acquired because of their line of work not because they hit the gym every day.
-
Castlevania is merely medieval, wearing heavy armors, and using from tiny daggers to enormous 2hand sword... so think twice about a "hot girl" being a warrior... actually waiting to watch hot warrior girls is kinda lame, from fantasy things... Sonia is a big exception cuz she is just using a whip and she can use nice magical attacks

I have no idea what you really said. But waiting to see a "hot guy" wouldn't be much better, yet most of them are probably so scarred and effed up, its not even funny anymore.
Quite frankly, I wouldn't wait to see a hot anything from a real life story, but its a game!
-
Speakin of SC, it is a shame that Shura is not real.

Okay.... a real warrior girl should look like this
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ieljastrik.nl.nu%2Fpictures%2FFIBO%252030%2520april%25202006%2520024.jpg&hash=f1b4b934ada62bc6c321ec163cacba8e687d2c5a)
Still want warrior girls?, i dont think that warrior women can be hot or at least they arent my type =/... I preffer them like mages
Any case Nathan was a kind of mage with the card things and Alucard looks more like a spellcaster than warrior
The one on the left really sint that bad - Thats my left, not hers!

Has anyone noticed that when you use the killer clown soul in DoS the cards are of the good guys? For example, the queen of hearts is Mina (I think), the ace of clubs is Hammer, and the joker is Alucard/Genya Arikado. But what's surprising is that the picture on the joker is of Alucard in his true form and not in the disguise known as Genya Arikado.
Interesting, right?

Old news, obviously.
I had a feeling that was the case, but no one seems to have mentioned it in this topic so I did. Just in case someone hasn't noticed.
-
I always thought I'd seen Death on one of the cards LOL.
-
Has anyone noticed in Castlevania 3 that when you pause the game in the clocktower stage the gears in the background keep moving? :o
-
nope, I try to avoid the clocktower, you only really have to go that way when you want the pirate guy, and I don't.

Did you guys notice that when you press a or b while playing Castlevania you either whip or jump?
No, but I've noticed when I press the F button something special happens.
-
and if you press the [power] button, you'll instantly win the game. but the sheer awesomeness of this will be so large, the console will overload and turn off for safety. how cool is that?
-
Guys! Did you know? If you connect your GBA with CV1 NES classic inserted with you psx with Sotn, you unlock 8bit Sotn!

It is very big though, it might destroy the forum with it's awesomeness.

well he can always resize it. this is the original vectored version, with this size you can resize it to anything you want and still have the best quality possible.

In Reply To #133
Not really. It looks bad if it gets too small.
-
it's fine on 100x100 with smart resizing/filtering/smoothing enabled, and the forum still looks good.
