Aside from producing what I consider to be mediocre and recycled games time and time again, the biggest thing that bothers me about him is that he's placed himself as THE top dog of Castlevania. HE decides what the official timeline is, HE decides what goes into and gets taken out of the Dracula's Curse cartoon script, etc. Aside from the upcoming arcade game(s), he's been the producer of every Castlevania game for the past few years, and he slags on games that are great, like the N64 games--but the funny thing is, his PS2 games don't even compare, and he shits on Legends but it's actually a fairly decent game. He's even mocked Circle of the Moon in the past, which is no worse than any of his games.
But what I'm getting at is that he is now considered the man behind Castlevania, when all other games before it were pretty much designed and created and directed and produced by an assortment of different people. I'm pretty certain a great deal of the staff members of the first Castlevania game aren't the same as on Castlevania IV or Rondo of Blood. There were always different teams creating different games. IGA has made Castlevania "IGA exclusive," and quite frankly it sucks. Even if he actually made games I enjoy, I'd still probably be pretty miffed that he has such a firm iron grip on the franchise without allowing anyone else to do their own thing.
-
I think the reason he doesn't wanna let anyone else assist him is because he feels he needs to prove that he can top SotN. Until this happens, he's not gonna let go of CV for a while.
In regards to removing certain games from timeline, I think he feels he is justified, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but obviously ticks off a lot of hardcore fans. Those games are just considered "stand alone" stories, Konami has done this before with the Metal Gear franchise. I'm sure there's lots of other series with the same situation (Zelda comes to mind, but I'm not too sure).
IGA has had some good ideas, although poorly implemented thus far. We still have the 1999 game to look forward to, and for IGA's sake, he better not fuck it up.
-
I just hope that Order of Ecclesia is a vast improvement over DOS and POR, which really stink. At least Aria of Sorrow had some interesting level design and is a pretty fun game.
-
one thing i miss most is being forced into playing through a level with a weapon that might not be ideal for the situation. the arsenals are just too huge and you can always find the one that's just right if you're willing to take the time to switch items. it does lead to a somewhat dull experience. fortunately, i can simulate that feeling of making due with what you have in most games. i really enjoy replaying the games when i make up rules like "ok, you can only switch items when you're at a save point" or "ok, you can only equip an item right after you've obtained it".

So... In which game was that the case naturally?

I'm surprised how so many people diss DoS but love AoS. I still think DoS was a major improvement over AoS in almost every way (except the soundtrack), albeit not as original (obviously). But I know I'm a minority here.
My main concern with IGA is actually his hat. It has to go. >:(
-
In Reply To #6
IGA can't give up the hat. It's the source of his power! With out it he becomes a average no-name game director.
-
In Reply To #7
I always thought it was the Vampire Killer he's carrying. But now that you say it, the hat would be way more logical.
-
He needs a wide variety of hats then, not just the one. Maybe he should experiment with different kinds of hats, like the sombrero and the fez 8)
-
In Reply To #9
I bet the one he's wearing is a magical relict of old, that houses great power. This is the reason why he wears this one and not some stylish Narrenkappe.

pretty much every game before Symphony of the Night, perhaps even including SoTN since you still could only have one subweapon equipped. two subweapons are better than one and three in my opinion though.

It's just now that I understand what you mean. Btw I liked to play through PoR without using Charlie and having just a short sword equipped to Jonny.

We can blame the metroidvania fanboys for that.

Well, when you end up a game programmer at Konami, work your ass of, and then maybe get a chance at producing a Castlevania title, then you can call the shots.
Seriously, what do you want?! Iga to call you up and say, "Hey, what do you want in this game?". He's not gonna call you over to his office or discuss business over lunch with you. Konami picked him to do it and all you can do is deal with it.
So yes, he is THE top dog of Castlevania. HE does get to decide what the official timeline is. He's the man in charge and you're just gonna have to wait til that changes. I doubt that'll be anytime soon, cause I'm guessing Konami likes him or else he wouldn't have been in charge for the last 10 years
-
If I ever met Iga it would not be pretty.
I would have to tell him (via translator since he probably doesn't know "Engrish") that I detest his changes and the direction he steers CV into these days and refuses to allow the series to get even a new breath of it's roots.
Don't shove DXC in my face because that was a fucking remake and that doesn't count. Why doesn't Christopher get a new game? The only BELMONTS we've seen get it's own game since Iga took over is Sonia, Leon and Juste and he retconned Sonia's game and her other for Dreamcast was CANCELED and Leon's game was horrible.
The 3D games are just horrible, they are too bland and unexciting, and the same old metro-fucking-vania formula is bland, stale and above all else, OVERDONE!!!
Fire Iga and get the old staff back on board and save this precious series from an unfortunate doom at the hands of dictator Iga!!!!!!
-
I don't get what the problem is. I like the games the way they are. Ok, the 3D games could have been better game play wise. However, the stories were pretty good. As for changing the timeline, as producer and top dog, it's his right. Chances are that if or when IGA is replaced, the new person in charge may change the timeline again. And then, all of you will be complaining again and forget about what you said about IGA.
I don't mean to sound mean and unreasonable, but if you think about some of the things I said above, that you will all agree with me, or at least in part.
-
In Reply to #19,
Well, DXC did count because fans have been waiting for an official release of RoB for several years.
Chris got his own comic book series, that's better than nothing. Sonia's Dreamcast game would've been terrible, that's why it was cancelled in order to spare Konami the humiliation.
The Belmonts are the stars of the series, so what if there are a couple of games that feature other protagonists? There's still plenty of possibilities.
The ps2 games aren't horrible, they're mediocre-average. I can name lots of other worse games than LoI and CoD.
IGA has stated that the reason he continues to make "metroivanias" is because the positive response those games get. Also, he even admitted that the style is overused & CV needs to "leap forward".

I never played DoS past the first boss (or maybe a bit after that but no more) but I heard the level design sucked pretty hard in DoS. Maybe thats why?
-
In Reply To #22
You must be mistaking it for PoR. DoS's level design wasn't bad, but PoR's was putrid.
-
In Reply To #18
Yes, thank you. The Prof speaks the truth. Some people need to stop hating. Play something else. Castlevania might have been a dead franchise if not for Iga. Quit bitching!
-
I'd rather the series be dead than to see shit continued to be poured out of IGA's ass.
But what I'm complaining about is that IGA has seemingly pushed everyone else who might be interested in making a CV game out of the way.
Unless of course nobody else at Konami was even interested anymore in making a CV title, which I frankly find hard to believe.
To reiterate, the thing that I'm annoyed about is that the series is now under the control of ONE GUY, when all the classics--the far superior games--were done by AN ASSORTMENT OF PEOPLE. And IGA didn't even head SOTN, as far as I know it was mostly the work of the guy who directed Rondo, but IGA brought up the idea of free-roaming and leveling up and using the Super Metroid-esque map system. It's not even exactly his game, he worked as assistant director, yet he holds it under his belt like it were his own. That would be like Shinichiro Watanabe claiming Macross Plus as his own. Sure, he co-directed it and his influence is clearly seen in the series, but it's still mostly the work of Shoji Kawamori.
I just want to see variety again. No one person should be the overlord of Castlevania games since it's never in the past been that way. Even the classic music was composed by an assortment of different people--the gal who did the tunes for the first Castlevania never did another CV score, I'm pretty sure a couple people worked on Simon's Quest, and the list goes on. I want different teams, different talents, different directors, different producers to be making games again.

I personally think DOS' level design is much worse than POR's. When I first played through the game I felt my mind going numb because so many of the areas were so poorly-designed. IMO, it was a huge step backwards from AOS.
-
In Reply To #25
So, you're saying the games Iga has been making over the years are shit? The things Iga brought to the table in Sotn like you mentioned ARE what make it a stand out game. I been playing since 86 with the original, and have seen all the changes over the years and think Iga is probably the best thing to happen to the series. And yes , I love the non-Iga KOBE stuff as well.
-
I personally think DOS' level design is much worse than POR's. When I first played through the game I felt my mind going numb because so many of the areas were so poorly-designed.
That is absurd. PoR had worse level design than HoD. Not only was it crappy, but the areas were so damn repetitive(I wouldn't blame someone if he/she got lost easy in the game), and after you beat the first four portraits, you have four more that are the same thing! The level designer sure was lazy.
-
So, you're saying the games Iga has been making over the years are shit?
I do think that, yes. Sure, SOTN is amazing, it was the first and best of its kind, but I highly doubt it would have been as great as it is if IGA had been the sole director. Even if he was the one solely responsible for the game's greatness, it doesn't change my opinion any that the GBA and DS games are lousy. To me IGA is like a one-hit wonder. I find it really strange that suddenly, since IGA stepped in and took control of things, KCE Kobe were no longer making games. Unless the division is defunct, which is probably the case. Like I said before, maybe nobody else is interested in making Castlevania games, in which case that sucks and I guess IGA should just keep doing his thing. But something tells me that he's just too concerned with the series and has too much power to allow anyone else to come in and make a game without his supervision.
I appreciate the fact that he brought two imports to the US in the form of the Chronicles games, and I understand his love for the series, but I just feel like his ideas and opinions are often quite stupid, and I don't like that he's the main man when it comes to all things Castlevania. CV was never a series like Zelda or Mario where Miyamoto always supervised or directed, or like Metal Gear and Kojima. I find it strange that the series suddenly came under the control of one man about five years ago, and has been that way ever since.
-
I can NOT WAIT until Iga is taken off the Castlevania games! Hopefully, the next guy in charge will retcon his games and we can finally get a good story going.

DoS's level design is not nice!! Aria's level design IMO is the most awesome after Symphony. DoS is having better enemies design and animation, but that's all it has. It lacks at level design, music, story and it doesn't have gameplay improvements!! On the other hand Aria was something new, with wonderfull level design, nice music, good story plot and an interesting gameplay!! My only complaint is that we didn't get the arranged versions of the sound track!! Only four tracks!!
-
People may hate me for that, but though I like the oldschool-vanias, I prefer every IGAvania (besides HoD) over ANY oldschool-vania. The only thing that matters to me greatly is gameplay. And gameplay sure was great in all of them... if you let HoD aside. No matter what you say. Your opinions aren't of any interest to me. They won't change my mind. I always loved Metroid more than CV, so a CV with Metroidesque gameplay is better for me than a standard stage-based platformer.
Other than that, we live in a time, where oldschool platformers don't sell well. I don't like that either, but I think it's just like that. Also, CV1 still rocks, as does SCV4, as does rondo, so I don't really need a new OldschoolVania.
And as said, don't try to change my mind with any bullshit-arguments. You won't have any success. I'll eccept you opinions, so you'll have to accept mine.

sounding kinda pretentious holier-than-thou internet tough guy there
anyway on topic, metrovanias have been degenerating for me with each new title. the newer the title is, the more sloppy, rushed and uninteresting it felt.
in pork's case it's almost visible, since the level design is repetitive cod-level copypasta, and the coding is so buggy you can cause the game to freeze accidentally, rather than by deliberate glitching like other games. hell, on some older ds systems the game will freeze randomly.
maybe ooe will change that. who knows.
-
LOL @ this thread.
The GBA and DS games were recieved well by critics and sold a lot, but still people think that IGA should pass the torch to someone else? Why would he deliberately make himself unemployed if Konami and the rest of the world is, in fact, pleased with his work? The only ones complaining are you guys, the so-called "fans", as always.
I too, prefer the IGAvanias to almost any of the oldschool games. Execpt maybe SuperCV4. I do, however, think that the formula is wearing thin, but I believe IGA is doing a fine job and all is not lost yet. And DoS was excellent. AoS was meh. (lol I am teh troll) So it's not only downhill from here. I have faith!

What's so pretentious about saying that I have my own opinions, which won't change through you arguments, mr celeb? Or is it the fact that I don't like Sotn that much?

Yes, Iga brought over two games that weren't available in Japan. But DXC is merely a remake, nothing more, nothing less. A good remake yes, but it isn't exactly "new" it's just a graphical rehash of a 15 year old game. Get your facts straight. It is not, I repeat, NOT new. That would be like 15 years from now if OOE wasn't released in US, remaking it and releasing it in US. It just didn't come here, it's still as old as it ever was in reality. And in this day and age, if it doesn't come here people will just download it or import it.
Iga did have a hand in SOTN and it was an awesome game. But to me I consider Dracula's Curse and CV IV the series' masterpieces. And until the day comes where Iga releases a remake of Dracula's Curse and the 1999 game he will not have my respect any longer simply because he is abusing his power and continuing to make mediocre games. He has a few good stories under the belt, I liked Soma's twist and Juste's story, and I especially want the 1999 game.
Castlevania needs more attention to it's roots, and I'm perfectly fine with him continuing his metrovania style if he would mix it up more and release more classical style games and 3D games in the style of what CV 64 was.

majority on the cv boards that count agrees that portrait is one of the weaker castlevania titles though. :o

While I am not sure whether I would choose Iga for the position, I think it is important or at least useful to have one creative director for a series. I see this as a means of telling a more consistent and perhaps deeper story. What if a different author was employed to write each of JRR Tolkien's many books detailing the world of Middle Earth?
As some have noted, Iga did rise through the ranks in Konami, made at least one highly successful title (SotN), and has continued to churn out at least marginally successful titles (at least as sales go).
I do not understand many people's attachment to playing as a Belmont. Obviously Castlevania is their story, even when a generation is largely impotent in fulfilling their destiny as vampire hunters. It is about their downs as much as it is about their ups. It would be a rather boring story if every generation produced a Belmont champion who could ultimately overcome any and every evil. Part of what makes the Belmont story rich is the humanity to it, and the courage despite the weakness at times.
I think it gives the story richness, and on a more practical level allows the game some added variety, to employ none Belmont characters along with or in place of the Belmonts in certain generations. One might look at it as the early designers having used up many of the Belmont stories, and Iga has had to balance things out to avoid being repetitive and to give the story its depth.
On the other hand, I agree that some of the recent games feel repetitive so far as level design go, and some of the gimmicks leave a lot to be desired. I am playing DoS right now and enjoy it but not as much as HoD or CotM (yeah seriously). PoR was the least impressive of the recent handheld games to me in this regard though I have not finished it (I got stuck and never came back to it because of other things).
-
I bet that when someone else takes over, say goodbye to the 2d style.
A lot of game makers would rather do a 3d title than to stick with the classic gameplay. Other than Contra, I cannot think of any old series that stuck to 2d action. Seein how well portable console can now do polygons, I wouldnt think the 2d gameplay would last unless it the director has lots of faith in it. I mean, Metroid, for the longest time was 2d until the DS was released, whereas no other metroids released was in that style; Smash bros doesn't count since that is a fighting game
People moans that IGA is killin the series unless he goes back to classic level base gameplay. No offense, but there are also those who like the metroidvanias. I personally am not a fan of them, but it is better than havin no CV in my honest opinion.
I mean for ME, this is similar to Contra 4. I didn't like it as much as the classic contras or shattered soldier, but I am satisfy with it and would be happy the contra 4 team design a contra 5 title.
I am sayin, who is to say that a new guy would put "heart" into a CV game? I mean, the Dreamcast version had a story that is more laughable to any of the post SOTN games. You think Soma bein Dracula reborn is bad, how about a chicken of a vampire and his ancestor from a few centuries ago, teamin up to defeat Drac through time?
I bet you guys a lot that you would whine when another designer takes over the franchise. It is apparant that some of you dudes whine just because it is different.

Where do you or any people get this idea that I'm trying to change others' opinions? Enjoy IGA's games all you like.
And yeah, unfortunately his games do get a lot of praise. But I don't like them (nice going on putting "fans" in quotation marks, shelv--I guess if I don't like the shitty new games, I'm not really a CV fan). Also, I never said anything about "passing on the torch" as if I want to see someone else take over CV. Dammit, people, don't you know how to read? I simply want variety back. I don't want CV to be controlled and produced by one single person, because it's only been like that for the past 5 years or however long it's been since HOD came out.
le05andalotmorenumbers, what about Mega Man (speaking of the ZX series and the upcoming MM9)? What about New Super Mario Bros. and the other Mario 2D sidescrollers on the DS? What of the upcoming Metal Slug 7? Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure? Kirby? There are tons of sidescrollers on the DS, lots of people are making them still. I highly doubt that if IGA let go of his grip on the series and allowed other people to develop games that suddenly there would no longer be any 2D games.
And "whine just because it is different"? Why is it that all of you people are so prone to attack ME and the others who share my opinion? I've never once said anything negative about your people's opinions on IGA's games. I think the games suck, that's my opinion, but do I go and make baseless assumptions as to why YOU people enjoy his games? Do I try and knock you down? I don't get why some of you are so uptight and getting your underoos all in a bunch.
And if I were whining just because it's different from the old CVs, then why do I adore SOTN? I consider it one of the greatest titles in the series. However, Kobe and IGA haven't come close to achieving that brilliance ever since. I'd say that Mega Man ZX does the whole free-roaming style of gameplay better than any of the post-SOTN Metroidvanias.
As for the whole story element that Moon Knight touched upon...I don't really care for any of the stories in IGA's games, to be honest. I've NEVER really cared about the stories in CV 'cos to me the games have always been far more about gameplay than storyline. I always thought the CV1/CV4/X68000 story was pretty cool, Dracula reviving and some dude trained in combat and blessed by God with supernatural strength and abilities taking down Dracula and his minions with a blessed whip or whatever, but that plot is very thin and I'm A-OK with that. It's enough to give motivation and purpose for the character, and I get to play a really cool game because of it. I honestly don't care about storyline continuity in the CV series since for me the thin story (even the newer games have thin stories) means little to nothing.
To sum things up and to spell it out for anybody who perhaps STILL doesn't get it: IGA can go ahead and continue to make the Metroidvanias that a lot of the people on this board love. But, I would really like to see different talent come in and create other games, specifically old school platforming games. Maybe other directors and producers would themselves crank out shit, it's highly possible. Perhaps no one at Konami right now is really talented enough to make a game that I enjoy. But perhaps this is a case where maybe Konami should allow another company to make a game. The post above me mentions Contra 4, and I adore Contra 4, and it was made by an American developer. I'm sure there's somebody in this wide world with the means of making a classic CV game and also has the desire to do so.

I think one must ask why havn't there been many (any?) Castlevania imitators.
-
I'm all about mashin' the buttons. :] For me CV has always been about the exceptionally fun whip-wielding (or in the case of Bloodlines, spear-thrusting) action, the precise platforming, the horror aspects, the creatures, the music, the atmosphere... Which brings about another thing: Handhelds don't do Castlevania justice. I'll admit that atmosphere, full sound, a large screen, and excellent graphics are a large part of why I enjoy a game. Obviously gameplay is the most essential, and I love games that play wonderfully but look like ass, but I also revel in the beauty and art of it all. Unfortunately, seeing a 2D Castlevania on a console is not very likely at all, aside from perhaps the 8-bit game, if it gets made.
I realize today's market has a lot to do with the games I enjoy most no longer being made. But there ARE still a number of old school games being made.
As for other people making CV games, I suppose nobody really wants to do a CV clone since they're usually looked down upon. Or no one cares. But I mentioned Mega Man ZX, which is clearly inspired by the Metroidvanias, but also fuses that with MM/MMX/MMZ style gameplay. A Castlevania game that combines the free-roaming aspects of the SOTN style games with the whip-wielding, non-leveling up platforming aspects of the older games would be really cool if you ask me.

what made you even think someone will try to do that, so you went with a disclaimer like that? even if it's stating the obvious, there really was no need to say it in such snobby arrogant tone. if someone goes and tries to change your mindset like:

then you can tell them to fuck off and die. but otherwise there's no point in adding silly disclaimers to your posts, especially worded like that, as if you were someone so important that every time you post someone would try that on you.

That said, I can totally see a valid point to Abnormal Freak's reasons for not being too fond of the current head cheese behind the demon castle chronicles. On the other hand, I also feel thankful that one of the greatest game series in the history of action platforming is able to continue onward with, all things considered, its integrity still fully intact. Beyond that, I think personally that until someone new comes around to snatch the whip from his sweaty hands, his personal CV master plan is what it is. I'd like to see KCEK make another CV game, or the original SOTN team go make another epic CV game.

Actually, the folks at KCET and its branches, the lil' people under the major heads are talented.

The former CEO of KCE Kobe is the leader of the company that developed the new Wario Land game for Wii, which quite honestly looks like a steaming turd. :) Which is depressing considering a 2D sidescroller for Wii would have been awesome (but only if it loses the Wii remote's motion functions...dammit).

I completely agree with you here!
Give him a break. I enjoyed CoD quite a bit, I loved DoS and AoS, and SotN is easily one of my favorites in the series. The only games he made that I didn't like were HoD and PoR. I think he has been doing a good job with series.
-
But what I'm getting at is that he is now considered the man behind Castlevania, when all other games before it were pretty much designed and created and directed and produced by an assortment of different people. I agree he's doing too much. He needs to delegate more of the work and have decent sized teams of people work on the games again. A game is a huge undertaking like a film. 1 person can't do everything, at least not fast enough to make the company any sort of profit. Not for a long time and that's only if they do a truly exceptional job.
-
I give some Castlevania fans credit for having the resiliency to continue following the series, even if they've been largely disappointing with the products for the last... 6 or so years.
I think Iga has made some bad moves and dumb decisions in his time as producer.

I remember when I got slammed for saying that Curse of Darkness is my favorite Castlevania game, and Symphony of the Night is overhyped.
Crap.. I just expressed my opinion, didn't I? I will leave now. :-X
::Hands you a cross and a flame shield:: You know: just in case. :P

I'm pretty darn excited about OOE, to be honest. Being able to explore outside of the castle will be fun, even though I'm sure the level designing will be much the same. But I'm hoping there will at least be nifty backgrounds and sprites to look at. :P The recent games haven't always had the best looking in-game artwork, but overall they're really good.
I dunno, something just tells me that OOE will be the best of the DS games. Well, here's hoping...

Koji Igarashi stood alone. Waiting, by himself, just 15 feet or so away from the Castlevania Judgment demo station set up at this year's E3. It was as if he was searching for something. For validation. I believe it would have made his day for even one individual to have walked up to the game, played for a while, and exited with a smile on their face. But it didn't happen.
The fanboy legions of Nintendo consoles are a force to be reckoned with, and it seems like most all of them have already written off this Castlevania fighter -- specifically because it's a fighter. The shared sentiment seems to be that it's great that Castlevania is making its debut on Wii, but in the form of a fighting game it's undesirable. While we can't offer a compelling counterargument to the contrary, it is safe to say that's it far too early to judge Judgment -- the completed title may well surprise several of the naysayers. And the Wii is not a console overcrowded with other options for fighting fans, either, so it could very well find itself a fair-sized amount of sales this November. The word is still out on Castlevania Judgment, so stick with our coverage in the next two months and the full review that arrives in November to learn, for sure, whether or not Iga was right to be sad.

While I'm hopeful for OOE, Judgment really does look like a steaming pile. I don't even play fighting games for one thing, and even if I did, I don't know if I could be excited for this.
Sucks that IGA had no one come to the booth or whatever at E3, but I'm not gonna boo-hoo for him over a crummy-looking game and nobody showing interest. Now No More Heroes, a truly excellent game, hardly got any attention in Japan. The director, Goichi Suda, was at a store for a signing on release date, and nobody entered the store to purchase his game. Talk about a kick in the balls. That game deserves all the praise in the world.

Suda's games aren't for everyone. NMH wasn't, neither was K7. They are more like insider-tips. I really love both of them, but I can totally understand, why they aren't popular.

That's 'cos Suda is so ahead of the curve and people don't like things that are new and awesome. :)
