I just got my copy today of a used (near mint, not even a SINGLE scratch on the case, disk or booklet) Castlevania Chronicles for $50.
I love this game, through and through! <3
What do you guys think of it. I'm guessing everyone on this site has it, so tell me what your favourite stage/boss was, or perhaps if you liked it.
Oh, and the music for the second stage is phenomenal. I actually thoroughly enjoy the remixed music.
-
My favorite stage is the tower of dolls, the music of this stage is awesome.
-
You got ripped.
EDITZ: IN MY INSIGNIFICANT OPINION OF COURSE
-
I have many years to play this one, but from what i remember my favorite stage was the clock tower and the stained glass theme for this stage my favorite music.
-
While I can't say I enjoyed one stage more than the other (although nr.3 is pretty cool), I do know what I enjoyed about the game itself.
Chronicles just has a really unique feel to it. Partly due to it's almost techno-ish remix. It's like Castlevania on E or something. It's also a bit darker, when compared to other late staged based CV's like SuperCV4 and Rondo. Finaly I do like Simon's new look (even though most disagree).
-
Good luck with the Clock Tower on Hard mode. It can get a bit tricky there.
-
Chronicles was never my favorite Castlevania. However, when it first came out it was only 20 bucks so I can't complain.

You didn't get ripped. Chronicles always fetches as much as original SotN discs, and DXC isn't helping to lower the prices.
I love Castlevania Chronicles. The new Simon design looked quite evil himself. (Red hair + glowing yellow eyes = awesome.) Drac's new look is the best yet.
The arranged sountrack is great. Simon's Theme is at it's most epic in this game, and Etude for the Killer is equally awesome with its sinister sound. The Original Thrashard in the Cave remains one of my preferred CV songs.
Don't forget the original mode. It's like a smoothie of greatness- SCIV's graphics with CV1's difficulty.
-
No way dude! You can get it for $33 or less on the bay, I know.

:O No kidding.... :'( I did get ripped.
Oh, and John Capricorn, sorry if in the other thread my reply sounded insulting. That was very uncalled for on my part.
Azmodan, I personally agree on Thrashard in the Cave, however, there's something about the new one that makes it one of the most memorable tracks in the remixes.

I still have yet to play this :-X

It is WELL worth it, and you should get it when you have the chance.
I just beat it today, and I must say that this game has been around for 21 years specifically because any title that has its roots in a game this astounding should be of legendary status!

Chronicles is a great little game that, despite what people say, is actually very little like CV1 with the exception of a couple stages. I got mine when it came out, but I don't think $50 is too much to pay for it. It's not like $150 for a copy of Rondo!

...I was willing to dish out $190 for a brand new copy of CC. :-[ I have some sort of sickness I believe....
-
This one's on top of my list, seeing a new Simon and overall, this game is enjoyable.
I wanted to buy a japanese version back then (because it was cheaper and for variety), but I found out that it had no extras, no interview and art gallery. Sigh.
-
So Marto, did you prefer the Original Mode, or the Arranged?
-

I liked them both, but:
Obviously, due to my EXTREME bias, I enjoyed the Arrange one perhaps a bit more than the original due to the Kojima design.
However, the original one gave me the nostalgic value that I was looking for when purchasing the game. The arrange mode had many new differences and was its own thing in my eyes.
So, I guess I'll go with the Arranged mode. Simon really did look badass. He himself looked like a villain actually. :P
And what about you Azmodan?
-
Oh, Arranged definitly. Set to Hard and 1 life for the post-SotN experience with the pre-SotN difficulty.

I'm guessing you've heard of the Castlevania anime. Do you like the mixed style they're using for the advertisement? It seems like an eloquent mix of Kojima's soft gothic take, mixed with the macho physique and more barbaric outfitting of the original Castlevanias.
Oh, and I was playing LoI minutes before getting CC, and trust me, that was a change of difficulty alright!
-
I want to get chronicles but it just seems too hard to get. Everyone on ebay is selling it for waaaaaaaaaay too much and I have no money. If i ever get $40-$50, should I buy it?
-
Love the Japanese version (which I unfortunately don't legally own), a true version of ADX68000 and a wonderful remake as well.
But the US version is garbage, besides the exclusive IGA interview. They changed the original game too much. Subweapons not breaking blocks and the removal of Japanese voices (the Tower of Dolls will never be the same). They should've left the localization for the remake only.

CVfan13, you should not use eBay for it. Instead, go to Amazon.com, and buy it from there. You can get it for $47, used, and it's very safe to shop from there. That's where I got mine. That, and it gives you a description of the condition of the item next to its price. (or below it...)
Here, I'll even give you the link. :)

That, or you can get a new one for $129.99 :-X
( I was going to do that...)
Still, here you go, and I definitely recommend it more-so than any other site out there! :)
-
There's also craigslist.com, but I don't know how reliable that can be.

Lol, as much as I love Chronicles, $129.99 is way too much to pay for ANY game in my book!

:-\ At the end, that's what I felt about it too. Fifty wasn't though! Now, 80 would have been probably near the limit of what I'd pay for it...

Thanks for the advice, but I use ebay all the time for games and never have any problems, but if you think amazon.com is good than I trust it.

My dad sells stuff on craigslist and its pretty good, but unfortunately, I haven't seen any games on it.

ebay > Amazon
big time
-
Man, I remember buying it the week it came out. Went to EBX and grabbed it brand new. $30 was such a nice price
-

Nice. Luckilly I got my friends Chronicles for free, he bought his old PS1 just for that game and didn't like it for it's the oldschool Castlevania style. Though he loves all the DS and GBA Castlevanias and SOTN.

:( Dude, I wish mine was from the release days...
Even though, mine isn't a GH version or anything. It's the regular black strip Chronicles.
Does this game even have a Greatest Hits version...????
-
Definitely does not have a greatest hits version. I bought mine the day it came out. I love this, it's one of my favorite Castlevania games. I just downloaded Rebirth and it seemed so lame, so I busted out Chronicles and WHAMMY so much better! I love the look of the game, the music is awesome, and Simon looks cooler than ever.

Why are you replying to a 3 year old topic? Anyway this game is great and its like $5.00 on PSN.

I finally bought this on PSN about a month ago. I don't think it matches up with its 16-bit brethren and I actually enjoyed Rebirth a lot more. Still, it does have some standout moments, particularly stages 2 and 3. It's at its best when it tries to innovate (moving mirrors, flaming rooms, frozen area, etc). The CG ending, despite its age, is quite cool. Also, the remixed music is amazing, especially level 2's (I wonder if the remix composer did work on Contra: Shattered Soldier or Neo Contra?). I can't beat the boss of the Clock Tower on Original Mode as of yet, but I beat Arranged Mode with the new and neat Simon sprite.
-
I really can't stand the redone Simon sprite. I only really play on that mode because the redone Dracula, by contrast, is super awesome looking.

You are correct, Sota Fujimori (mostly known for his work in bemani games) did a few songs in shattered soldier, most (all?) of neo contra and this soundtrack.

I love Chronicles. I remember being so excited when it was released I modded my PSX and bought the Jap import cuz it came out before the US version. (I ended up buying the US version too though.) I think Iga did a real good job with this one. Having 2 versions of the game on 1 disc is great and I really like the new soundtrack on the arranged mode. The FMV's look a bit dated now but I thought they were great at the time, especially the ending cinematic of the castle crumbling---the castle itself looked HUGE! The gameplay was also really good. It was a tad blocky, but it definately played like a CV and it was fun. I still play it every now and then and it still feels fresh...CV2, CV3 and SCV4 all have that quality.

I typed in Castlevania Chronicles on search, and this was the topic that came up. Didn't look and see how old it was. Glad to hear people can play it for 5 bucks.

Wow necro-thread. Anyhoo i got chronicles off the psn and can't get enough of it. The game does such a good job of kicking my ass. I wish they would make more classic games like this...
