Title: The Smash Bros. Thread
Post by: Killerwhip on September 12, 2007, 03:54:27 PM
Just thought I'd start a thread for people to talk about Super Smash Bros. Brawl since the old one no longer exists.

I want to play when it's out. :o But I don't own a Wii. Figure by now I may as well wait for a price drop. At least, I'm hoping it's soon around the corner...

I have it preordered along with Guitar Hero 3, and I can't wait to play both.
Maybe Nintendo will surprise us with a drop near the holidays, though, at the rate Wii's selling, I doubt they will.

I did see a few Wiis in stock at my local Target a week ago. It's a rare sight to see them behind the case at any store. :o I thought of buying one, but then figured I'd rather have Nip/Tuck season 4, after which I didn't have enough dough for a Wii, much less a Wii and a game. :o

I guess there's not much out now I care about playing. Zelda I got for GameCube (which it's better on), RE4 I have for GameCube (I don't much care about the extras or the Wii controls), and Brawl and No More Heroes aren't out yet.

You must have gotten there shortly after the shipment arrived.  Back in February, even keeping up with the shipments, it was still a bitch to get a Wii.

I like the Wii controls in Zelda.  I'm sure it was good on either platform though.

I am REALLY psyched about Meta-Knight's ship being in the game.  That was one of my favorite areas in Kirby Super Star, and they even retained the double barreled cannon-boss that shoots bombs, a laser, and its fist at you, and included those features in the stage.  That is simply awesome treatment to the hard-core gamer in me.

Though, I'm not a Kirby fan, I can relate to that with the Fire Emblem level. Nintendo sure is putting in a hell of an effort to make their fans happy.

Well thats two of us at least. I got caught up in the Melee hype not having liked the original much only to sell it a month or so later(to get Star Fox Adventures, which was probably worse).

Since we are getting it next year I might pick it up though considering that post Mario Galaxy there's bound to be a Wii software drought again.

Man, in the summer of '02 I was playing Melee a ton. Literally every weekend with my buddies for hours and hours. Went on like that for over a year. (Those were the great hangout days of movies, games, music, swimming, etc.) I can't imagine NOT liking that game. :o

Today's update is pretty good. I always enjoyed playing Special Melee in multiplayer. Playing as Giant Mario with Mega Mushrooms turned on to make them even more bigger and using Mario's taunt to make him even more bigger. They brought back the Metal Boxes, I can't wait to see how each character will look like in Metal.

Yeah, one of my friends was very fond of Mewtwo. He was a tough opponent. :o

I mostly stuck to Ganondorf. I was a slow, heavy-hitter type of player. Never could quite play like my other friends, with all the fancy strategies and precise moves. But I held my own. :o Won countless matches. I was a worthy adversary to them. >:O

Actually if you use your head... the fact that a Konami character is in the game makes it more likely that Simon might be used.  Because Nintendo has already struck a deal with Konami.
Title: Re: The Smash Bros. Thread
Post by: Slayer on September 29, 2007, 07:14:57 PM
My input on this whole Simon business:
It's possible for Simon to be in it...
...at the same time, though, I doubt that Nintendo would use more than 1 Konami character in the game.  If anything, I'd think they'd open the oppurtunity for other companies to have their characters in it as well.  This isn't Nintendo vs. Konami, afterall.
...I believe they already made a Konami game that was like Super Smash Bros that had Simon in it...

Uh... why?

Smash Bros is a fighting game using First Party Nintendo Characters.

Make that "was."  On the Japanese site (way back in June 2006), Sakurai stated that Nintendo was looking into putting at least three third party characters in Brawl--including Snake.  So, that leaves AT LEAST two slots open.  Most suspect that Mega Man (Capcom) and Sonic (Sega) will take those spots, but it's really anyone's game.  Realistically, Simon isn't likely, as Snake is already a character representing Konami; that said, there isn't a rule stated by Sakurai in place that says anything about "one character per company."

Another fact that not many may know about:

During the summer of 2006, the Japanese Brawl site took a survey/poll/write-in type of thing where you could suggest characters, stages, and (I believe) musical themes.  On the list of characters that got Sakurai's attention was none other than Shimon Belmondo.

So I'd say that he's a possibility, if a bit of a long-shot.  Stranger things have happened.

Quote
The ONLY reason Snake is in it is because Kojima begged to get him in!

"Begged" is a word that was put in quotations when it was first printed in an article breaking the news of Snake's involvement in Brawl in mid 2006, meaning the word can hardly be taken literally.  At most, Kojima probably said, "hey, Sakurai, can Snake be in the game?  Please?"  And Sakurai probably agreed.  Also, Snake was meant to be in Melee but couldn't be squeezed in due to time constraints.

Quote
Simon, Alucard, Richter, Sonic, etc ain't gonna be in it.

Unless you know something that the rest of us don't (i.e. live next to Sakurai, happen to be dating Sakurai, work at Nintendo, etc.), you have no reason or evidential backing to make such a claim.  Indeed, given the evidence, it's quite possible that Sonic AT LEAST will be in the game (Sakurai and Mayamoto have both stated that Sonic was THE MOST requested third party character), let alone Simon (who, again, apparently received enough fan votes to appear on Sakurai's list of possibilities).

That said, I'd say that Simon may be (at the very least) an assist trophy, if nothing else.
Title: Re: The Smash Bros. Thread
Post by: VoDkA on October 03, 2007, 10:33:42 AM
lol. i want goku in there too

Not likely, I'm sorry to say.  Sakurai mentioned that one rule in place is "no anime, movie, or comic characters."  The third party characters to be used MUST have originated in a video game AND must have been in a game featured on a Nintendo system.

Yeah yeah, I know.

It's fucked up, though. The point of Smash Bros is to be first-party Nintendo characters. I could understand (reluctantly) that Snake got put in there because of Kojima's nagging at Nintendo, but not Sonic. Now it's looking to be more like an all-around game character fighting game.

Not that that's a bad thing, but it shouldn't happen with a series that's known for being Nintendo-only. Save Nintendo VS Konami VS Sega VS etc, etc for another game series.
Title: Re: The Smash Bros. Thread
Post by: Cypress on October 10, 2007, 06:45:52 AM
I think it was a bad desicion on Nintendo's part. It should be all Nintendo characters. The other characters are just there to advertise themselves and take up space that could have been used by Nintendo characters (Fire Emblem!). Lyn is an assist trophy, but Sonic is playable. That is lame. There hasn't been a good sonic game since the days of the genesis. If they are gonna put in 3rd party characters at least make them good. A castlevania character should have been in. There have been several for nintendo systems. Metal gear had one or two games and sonic never had a good one on Nintendo.

While I agree to some extent, I think the problem with "saving it for another game series" is that such a thing would probably never hit American shores.  We all know what happened with DreamMix...so, honestly, this is probably the best we're going to get.

That said, I don't think Sonic deserves his spot.  He's not a classic NES character.  But, hey, I'm happy he's in, regardless.

Uh, Sonic & Mario have been considered "rivals" in the gaming industry for a very long time, and now they finally get the chance to FIGHT eachother, & you think that's lame?

Quote

That's a matter of opinion. Besides, Sonic is an icon in video games regardless.

Quote

It would've been more out of place if Alucard was added to the roster than Sonic. Who do you think is more recognizable to the masses?

It shouldn't matter if a character had a good game on a system or not. As I've said, Sonic & Mario have a long history and rivalry (to an extent). That's really the main reason why he was added.

I'm sure there'll be assloads of Nintendo-specific characters anyway, so I see no reason to complain for Sonic wanting to join in on the fun. Sheesh..
Title: Re: The Smash Bros. Thread
Post by: Cypress on October 10, 2007, 11:04:42 AM
Those were my opinions as you said. I never said they were facts. I still do think it is lame that sonic is in and Lyn is an assist trophy. Nintendo characters should be playable if they are in. I never knew mario and sonic were "rivals". Sonic and Knuckles are rivals, Sonic and Mario...I don't see how they even matter to each other aside from them being platformers.
And as for Alucard not being recognizable, they put in several characters that were Japan only, or few people knew about (Marth, Roy, Mr. Game and watch) so I don't think it would be a big deal. Plus if they saw Alucard in the game im sure a ton of people that have never played a Castlevania game before would be playing as him alot.

As for snake, I wonder if Konami had a deal with nintendo to put him in the game in exchange for MGSTTS coming to gamecube. Just a thought. At least snake is an interesting character.
Title: Re: The Smash Bros. Thread

Mario & Sonic were rivals being that Sega & Nintendo were rivals at one point.

Sonic is cooler than Lyn anyway (just my opinion..)

Good stuff.  I hope he gets Green Hill Zone as a stage.

I don't know.  He actually looks much, much faster than Fox...there's likely to be a massive learning curve with Sonic.  But, if the videos are any indication, learning the character will pay off...

I hope you're joking...because if you're serious, that's the most ridiculous and baseless claim I've ever seen.  There is NO reason to think that a character, ANY CHARACTER, resulted in this delay, especially since a playable demo was featured at the conference during which Sonic was announced (and Sonic was a fully-playable, fully selectable character, insinuating that he's been done for awhile now).

Most likely, the delay is due to a bug, marketing, or wi-fi related content (such as the "user-created content" that was hinted at in the article announcing the delay).
Title: Re: The Smash Bros. Thread

They're probably trying to make sure that everything will run smooth at 100%. If that's the case then delays don't bother me.

It's not so much due to a character being added...the addition of a character *may* delay the game a bit.  However, Sonic's fully playable, according to IGN.

So, I'm sorry that she hates Sonic, but he's in the game.

EDIT: Again, with the condescending assholery. It was sarcasm.

Putting sonic in may have changed what other characters may be added (3rd party.) Also, possible new levels and music may be added due to him. Until we get the final product or some more insight we can't really say anyone's theory is unfounded. Besides, she didn't give her reasons for thinking that.

I figured the game would get delayed. Most big games do. Lets hope it doesn't end up like the last Zelda game.

Oh, and new vids on gonintendo and some info on ign.

I don't mind a delay as long as it means new content. Some people might not like Sonic being added, but I personally think the more the merrier. You can't get enough characters in the game, in my opinion. If they want to add Master Chief, Arthas Menthil, Simon Belmont, or HHH, I say go ahead. :P

IGN:
Marth
First Appearance: Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryu to Hikari no Tsurugi, Famicom, 1990 (Only in Japan)
Next Appearance: Fire Emblem DS, DS, Coming in 2008
Of similar concern to some has been Marth, as some fans have been worried that Fire Emblem franchise newcomer Ike would be replacing him, in the same way that Lucas seems to be replacing Ness. But this one doesn't cause us as much concern

As awesome as that would be, I still doubt it.  I might be wrong.  I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see it happening.  Especially since Nintendo could put a different main character in and give him an agile moveset similar to Marth's. Then again I never thought I'd see the day that Sonic was in.  I guess we'll have to wait and see.  This week's updates sucked, so hopefully there will be some updates that are actually worth somethign next week.

There is also the fact that Marth has been in two fire emblem games and he is the original fire emblem Lord. The remake would make him a candidate for return (that is the whole reason roy was in) and also if you hadn't noticed (or I didn't mention already) the emblem used for the Fire Emblem characters in smash bros (Ike included) is Marth's sword the Falchion.

That could mean something.  I didn't notice the emblem.  I don't know, maybe he will get in.  The only thing that would make it for sure would have been if the DS Fire Emblem was released before Brawl.

Why would they take marth out of smash for? I mean the character plays extremely well and is one of the hight tier character commonly used.
Title: Re: The Smash Bros. Thread
Post by: The Last Belmont on November 20, 2007, 02:55:14 PM
There is also the fact that Marth has been in two fire emblem games and he is the original fire emblem Lord. The remake would make him a candidate for return (that is the whole reason roy was in) and also if you hadn't noticed (or I didn't mention already) the emblem used for the Fire Emblem characters in smash bros (Ike included) is Marth's sword the Falchion.

I agree I don't think marth is going anywhere that'd be like taking link or mario out, it would piss off too many people.

Ah, nevermind.  You guys are probably right.  He is favored pretty well by a lot of people, and is a damn good character.  He's the only person I'll use in Melee.

Seriously, when is the last time we saw a good update though?

Man, Saki should of been a playable character instead of an assist trophy. The pictures make it look like he is a playable character. Man, he would of been cool to have as a playable character.
Title: Re: The Smash Bros. Thread
Post by: le052383 on November 24, 2007, 02:18:02 PM
Seein how Saki is in the game, I began to wonder what treasure character would be playable.  I mean, if there is a pattern whereas there is a assist trophy from another company (i.e. Grey Wolf,) there has to be a playable character from that same company (i.e. Solid Snake,) then that means there should be a playable character from Treasure.  If so, I hope it is a guardian heroes character.

Now Sakurai's probably just throwing random things  in and calling them updates. I kinda figured there would be a friend list, and the widescreen display update was just pathetic. The only thing I've found interesting in the past month is the new color changes.

Is anyone else disappointed by the game's less then average soundtrack so far?

The jazz arrangement of Meta Knight has made me lose all hope.

Still. It is the same case as Marvel Vs Capcom 2. The entire soundtrack was pretty much Jazzy tunes. Now is that what one would honestly find ideal for the battle of the century? With all these composers it is odd that almost every song in Smash Brothers Brawl seems to be either a generic attempt at orchestral (Kid Icarus, Zelda OOT Mix) dumbed down techno (Donkey Kong, Ridley), or just random (Ashley's theme).

And once again..perhaps one would like that type of music, but I am not sure if it belongs in this particular game. That is just my opinion though.

So I assume you like "Dark Link"? When I saw that I thought I was on a bad Mugen fan palette site...

And how is the widescreen addition pathetic?

I meant the gameplay.  Maybe a new character, someone's moveset, or final smash.  Even a collection item or assist trophy.  I'm not saying I'm pissed that it's in the game.  If you have a widescreen TV, then good for you.  I just don't think it should have been a sole update.  Were it accompanied with something else, I wouldn't care.

Honestly, this game better have 36+ balanced characters, incredible online play, and a ton of good stages.
Theres no reason it shouldnt since theyve delayed the game three times.

For some reason i doubt its a translation issue. The E-4-All Demo was in English first off. Why it is possible they wanted to change things there still the issue of the what has been revealed on the site. Every thing was in English. Everything meaning the menus and any text in the shot. (this same reasoning can be applied to other languages as well)

I think its just a production issue. ya know...cd's and such. oh well....either school will keep me occupied or ill pick up No More heroes or Dragon Quest Swords (finally).

Stop at 4:20 and 4:21 at the video. From last Friday's update we learned that stickers can be equiped to power up your characters in the Subspace Emissary and can only be used for certain playable characters right?

In the video, they show Ness, Jigglypuff, and Lucario as part of the characters that can equip those stickers as well. So, all 3 of them confirmed to be in Brawl.
