For the past 3 years, I have not owned a home gaming console --and I've missed out on EVERYTHING. 5 kids and a narcissistic anti-gaming wife can lead a man astray, but that's another story... Lords of Shadow has finally reawakened me --much like SotN reawakened me after the malaise of those dark early years of the Nintendo 64... Unfortunately, LoS presents a major choice in which game system to buy, so I'm really baffled what to do next --as I am truly ignorant. Please enlighten me which system I should own and why.
-
Well I own a ps3 and I love it. I don't know what kind of games you like but that should help determine your choice. God of war, uncharted and metal gear solid are just some of my top choice exclusives for the ps3. Plus it has a blu ray player if you're into that. The online works fine and its free, plus there's a good selection of downloadable games. Also ps1 backwards compatibility is nice.
The two drawbacks I see though, are that the 360 tends to get more downloadable games, or downloadable games first. And that a lot of people have 360's so if you want to play online with friends that also have 360s than that may be the way to go
Over all I'm am very please with the ps3, so I would recommend that.
-
I have both consoles, & they both have their advantages, but for LoS' sake, I'd pick ps3. The controller will be a lot more comfortable, the system isn't quite as loud as the 360, & there's the stuff Professor Bean Burrito mentioned. 360's DLC blows Sony's outta the water imo.
Considering Konami developed LoS with the ps3 hardware first, I'd go with that.
-
If you get the 360 you can also get the 360 exclusive title Shadow Complex, which is basically a traditional 2D metroid/castlevania style exploration game only in glorious 2.5D. I highly recommend it.

Why the hell would you ever marry someone like that?

Good Question. I was in love --or some lame shit like that...
-
I don't have a PS3 but LoS was developed on it so I guess that makes it the lead platform. I'm getting the 360 version since I do not own a PS3.
If I were you, I would invest in a PS3 and get LoS for it.
-
You should honestly look at other games that both consoles provide besides LoS and make your judgment on which one has the more games you want besides LoS. Otherwise, going by the reviews, there isn't much difference between the two, so you might as well go with the cheaper one (360).
-
I have a PS3 and love it.
The online is free, it has a Blu Ray player and the controller is easier to hold. If you have a PSP (or ever plan to get one) they work together, you can download games for the PS3 (older PS1 games, ect) and play it on your PSP. Plus Move is coming out for it soon as well.
I'd recommend the PS3..
-
If you can afford both, then go for that. Both are great machines, and it's awesome to be able to play everything. Otherwise, like others have said, decide what you want from your console and go from there.
I've been playing my PS3 a lot more often than my 360 lately. Aside from liking the interface a little better, that's pretty inconsequential, though.
-
I'm really wary of a game designed for ps3 getting dummied down for the 360. I've heard alot of rumblings over the years about Xbox Live being superior to the Playstation Network. Most of my wayward friends have 360s as well --so there is certainly a social draw... Can anyone tell me about the costs, features (pros and cons) of these online services?
-
Well, X-Box Live had a year head-start in the online gaming market, so of course it's ahead of the pack. But that doesn't mean the PSNetwork isn't inferior. Live's interface is very user-friendly; it has Facebook, Netflix, the Game Library is easy to navigate, there's really no issues. A Gold Membership will cost you about $50-$60 which lasts for a year (if I recall).
The PSN is very streamlined, as well. If you've ever used a PSP then you'll be familiar with the setup. There's a game section & a movie section, the menus are also easy to navigate. The best draw is that it's FREE, and it has it's own internet browser, which the 360 lacks. There's an optional service called PlayStation Plus, subscription is $49.99 for a year or you can pay less for just a few months. The package includes exclusive demos, content, avatars, etc.
So it's really your call. Both consoles have downloadable SotN, but as for exclusives, ps3 has Chronicles & 360 has Harmony of Despair. The new 360 slim is Kinect-ready, while new ps3 slims come packaged with the Move peripheral & Eye Camera.
Remember how everyone was saying Bayonetta looked better on the 360 than the ps3? That's because 360 was the lead platform. It remains to be seen if that'll be the case with LoS, but I don't wanna take any chances. There's also the issue of installing a portion of game data, which may or may not become a nuisance with future games you may purchase. I'll get the European Limited Edition for 360 though, just for shits 'n giggles (:
-
well like they said ps3 online is free like the wiis xbox is like 10 a month now I think for gold which ya need to basically do anythin... Silver is free but like I said you cant do shit with silver
-
Xbox live is going to cost $60 a month very soon and unless you plan on playing a lot of online games, it's really not worth the price.
Honestly at this point in the lifespan of both consoles I'd say PS3-it just does a lot more out of the box in terms of media capabilities and you still get a great system with it (not to mention you can justify it to your wife as a blu-ray player :P ). A lot of 360 exclusive franchises are going multiplatform aside from the ones being published by microsoft and they both have a great selection of games.
Also, the lead platform for LoS is the PS3, so if anything it's likely the game will be the same on both consoles or better on the ps3. Because of the way developing for both systems works, if a game's lead platform is the 360 the PS3 port will suffer, but the other way around produces the same results for both consoles. EA and some other companies are moving to make the PS3 the lead development platform for this reason. Bayonetta was slightly worse because sega did a lazy port job but it's still playable.

Where did you hear that bullshit?
-
oh god my bad LOL I meant $60 a year HAHAHAHA
Personally though as an xbox owner I really don't see what our money pays for -online is still P2P and there are ads littered all over the dashboard. I've neper felt that playing killzone or MAG onlinewas an inferior experience to the xbox online experience, so shrug.
I bought my 360 because rock band 2 wasn't out on ps 3 at the time, but if I was picking between the two consoles now is go with a ps3. honestly the best thong you can do is just go and browse the top games for each console and see which ones you'd be interested in playing.
-
The 360's dashboard is TERRIBLE. I can't navigate in it. I always hit the xbox button to bring up the text based menu. it resembles the old dashboard in layout. Not sure where you're seeing ads though. I've never seen them in the text menu.
What we're paying for is better service. It is indeed better. Their service is faster and more reliable than PSN. It all depends if you want better service for a price, or settle for the free.

a narcissistic anti-gaming wife
That must really suck. All I can say is, I'm really glad I'll never put my husband through that kind of Hell whenever I get married. Anyway, I own a PS3, and I absolutley love it, so I'll be purchasing LoS for that system. Besides, since it's the leading console, there are probably going to be some differences (graphically) to that of the 360 version. Also, it brings me back to FFXIII; some game review sites said the 360 version had more blurry graphics than the PS3 version, and there's even a side-by-side comparison video that shows this.
As for the 360 in general, the dashboard is horrible and very difficult to navigate through (I owned a 360, but sold it), plus I read that the price of Live was going to be raised. I don't know if this is true, but in any case, I'd rather not pay for internet connection, seeing as I already have one to begin with. But, it's your decision, and either way, you'll be enjoying the game no matter what system you decide to buy.
-
Go for the PS3. I own both, and I absolutely prefer the PS3. The Xbox is crap, it breaks all the time. The online service is better but that doesn't make up for its crappy reliability. For instance, my DVD drive has crapped out. It almost always tries to read everything as a movie, even if its a 360 game. I have to try restarting 5 or so times before it finally recognizes that its a game disk (and this happens with all of my games). While I'm the only one I know that has this problem, its absolute bullshit. I would avoid the 360 (I have also gotten multiple rings of death, and all of my friends have had at least one). The Xbox has also been proven to break game disks, even if its lying down in its correct position, many of my games have had these ugly rings scratched into them. The PS3 has never given me any problems and is very reliable. Go with the PS3, there are no exclusives for the Xbox that make up for its shit quality and reliability.
-
My choice is PS3.
But that's mostly because LOS was developed with PS3 in mind.
And it has Metal Gear Solid 4.
Otherwise practically all game series that I play are multiplatforms.
-
loox like playstation 3 wins. HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES, CECIL-KAIN?!
-
Also, as far as the price for a Live Gold membership, Michael Pachter was predicting for Microsoft to eventually raise the price to $100 a year. It's just a prediction, and Pachter has been wrong on a lot of things before, but it could be something to think about, I guess.

Just fine. Thank-you. :-)
And thank-you EVERYONE --all of your comments were helpful.
I'll be putting money down on the Limited Edition for PS3 very soon.
I'll be shopping Best Buy for a new Home Theater next weekend.
My console gaming exile is almost over.
-
Glad we could help, enjoy some good games.
-
Is there any reason one's better than the other? Any known flaws?
-
I never ever play on my PS3. It's collecting dust really. That could change if I ever pick up Heavy Rain though, which looks fab. Also, I need to finish Yakuza 3 someday! The 360 however has most of my favourite games, but I'm worried about LoS coming on 2 discs. I don't have enough space to install disc 1 on it. Soooo, I think I'll get the PS3 version after all. I don't think there will be any major differences between the systems though. Not like Bayonetta anyway.
Also, as much as I love my 360, it's kinda loud which is especially annoying when playing story heavy games. It's not TOO distracting, but it bothers me sometimes. So yeah, PS3 it is for LoS.
-

That's the advantage of Blu-ray's dual-layered system. You can put twice as much info on a DVD disc then using the standard DVD system. That's something that the PS3 has over the XBOX 360. If they have two discs of LoS for the 360 then they'll only need on for the PS3...unless the the PS3 version has a whole bunch of little tid-bits and special features.

Agreed...
Sony has also gotten Namco to sit back down and reintroduce Ace Combat back to the console.
Moves like this, as well as the technology Sony puts into their machine....well, I expect that Sony will be returning to its glory days, and CV is going to be an outstanding title on PS3. I would not be surprised if 360 owners end up with blown up home consoles, saving and other data issues tied to the 2 disc set up.....
-
I wish I could change my vote on the poll because I just bought a ps3 today.
-
looks like you will be able to use a Gabriel avatar now in Playstation Home. that's one thing the PS3 has going for it.

there are also minor framerate problems on the 360 version
-
^That's what I am hearing now... makes me wonder if it's installed and it's doing so? or they are confusing the intentional slow downs... as Jorge mentioned in his post over yonder. I hope it's not true.
-
I love my 360, and will be getting it for 360. I've never had ANY problems with mine, but mine was made with a Japser chip, later on in the 360s life. I will say I know many people who have had theirs die. But I never buy anything when it first comes out. I prefer a nicer price and to have all the kinks worked out. Heck my buddies PS2 would stop playing Gran Turismo 4 when a race started. But his PS2 was bought when the first came out. I personally think the XBOX has better exclusives by far. But they interest me and might not someone else. Gears of War, Fable, Mass Effect(especially Mass Effect). While the only game I really want to play on ps3 that is exclusive is God of War 3. But it looks like This game will take care of that problem. As I love Castlevania, if this is sort of like GOW but with Castlevania style. It'll be my new favorite game. Oh, not to mention the 'Titans'. I love Shadow of the Colossus, and that looks a bit like that. I must say I'm pretty excited. This is prob the first new game I've been super pumped about for some time. Heck it's Castlevania. I'm sure it'll be fine on 360, maybe a bit slicker on ps3 since that's the system it was designed for. But from what I normally hear, games on both systems tend to wind up better on 360. Maybe I'm thinking wrong here. but I think the Bethesda games are even glitchier on ps3. Oh, and 360 has more cool exclusive downloads, and I hear the ps3's online isn't as good. It better not be considering I pay 50 bucks a year for online service. I hope this game has a killer soundtrack. It looks leagues better than the PS2 Castlevanias(which I liked). I'm sure it's gonna rock on either system.
-
I heard some of the newer ones also die... it's one reason they got rid of the 3 red rings... >.>
I had an older one that worked fine for a good long time. Never broke down, I just got it banned and switched it out claiming it had reg rings, lol.
In any case... I thought I read a post about Cox and teh slowdown... like he said it's not there any more or fixed or something? (for 360 I think, specifically)
-
That is one gay fucking fact. Getting banned. How damn lame! You meet a few dip shits online, and they are actually loser enough to complain about you like a little fag, then you can get banned. What the FUCK? Why I try and not say a thing on xbox live, and I've actually had people diss my rep for it. I have bad stuff on my rep for being 'not a team player'. Fuck one time a guy on halo shot me in the back of the head with a snip rifle that was on my team. So I shot him in the chest with a shot gun, and he complained about me. What a fag. Wow, that's shitty that new ones mess up. I'm on mine all the time. Not really gaming, but I watch Netflix a lot lately. For the last 3 weeks I've had my xbox on for 12 hour of the day. Then again I take care of my stuff. I have the same NES that I got in 1992. Works like a charm, as do all of my other systems. While my one friend who's family is very dirty and destructive. They had 4 ps2s, they are on their 5th xbox. It's ridiculous. I myself never have my stuff break down, and I use the shit out of em.
-
^Sucks dude... though it wasn't my reason for being banned.
And yea, I hear about breakdowns but I've neer had it happen. Lucky me, or us, rather.
-
PS3 all the way, and not only because its the lead platform but because its a better value.
the only reason to get a 360 is if you have to play halo, and I have to play God of War just that much more than Halo (Halo 2 cured me of giving 2 shits about the series... kinda like the Matrix 2- convalute the shit out of the story etc)
Anywho- the PS3 will give you blueray and both give you netflix-and the ps3 is also a 3d bluray player if you care about that. bluray + netflix + free PSN = win over 360 any day...
I know it has changed now with the new 360 systems, but it used to be by the time you bought a 360 with a harddrive and then gave it WiFi it was MORE than a base PS3
If I play games with friends its in person or in a MMO on my computer- and I hate paying for XBL- and XBL gold members should be thanking Sony for comeing out with PSN + @ 50$ to force down gold from about 120 to about 60...or so they say, its still about 100+ for gold- boo.
And the PSN as a media server rocks- also the hard drive is upgradeable and that action is supported by sony- rather than banned by microsoft so they can charge you, what was the 60gig add on drive to the Arcade? 120?$? - just buy some SATA 2.5inc drive, toss it in your PS3 and it converts it- the PS3 also has an option to backup your current PS3 harddrive to an external drive so when you swap to a bigger/faster drive it will re copy everything.
I have a 60gig fatty hardware ps1/2 comptable I got refurbed from compusa.com for 260$ a few years ago (good deal) and a slim 120gig I bought for upstairs bluray.
The ps3 outside of gaming is a supriour bluray / 3d bluray player to every option- the only reason imo you would not buy a ps3 as even just a bluray is if you just want a simple entery level blueray thats sub 200, once you break the 200$ mark you should just go to a PS3. I have an insignia wireless bluray we bought for 140$ from bestbuy for the bedroom- it has built in netflix- the first one we got would not boot, the 2nd works. The netflix experiance is not as good, no animated menus or search function- playing of blurays seems like a task for the loud drive- I feel if I used it as much as my primary (60gig) ps3 it would be dead in a month, then to get a good stand alone bluray that has wireless etc- your getting close to a ps3...and it does not have a harddrive or media shareing stuff like a ps3 does.
okay ps3 fanboi out!
looking forward to castlevania :-)
