Title: Castlevania, what haven't we seen yet?
Post by: Belmont Stakes on March 19, 2011, 06:21:52 PM

Do you think it would be possible to combine Castlevania (I,II or even III) with its platforming, pits and instant death hazards with Symphony of the Night? There is no question that a lot of the older players like myself like the platforming aspects and that the popularity of SOTN and the Gameboy Advanced and DS titles have struck accord with the younger demographic (supposedly). Can the two gaming engines ever meet somewhere to give us something I have not yet seen. Please keep in mind I have not yet played LOS.

Second and last question. Castlevania I boss fights could be considered to be the precursor to fighting games (save for Karate Champ).
Do you think a Castlevania fighting game could be done right if the right people get behind it. Please disregard Judgment as it was a big breasted abomination.

Of course these things are possible, but the people in charge right now are far more concerned about reinventing Castlevania for the masses --rather than honoring it for what it is.  Instead of Transylvania we get Middle Earth.  Instead of Night we get Daylight.  Instead of Pipe Organs we get Brass and Strings.  Instead of Fleamen, Bone Billars, and Medusa Heads --we get Goblins, Trolls, and Giant Warthogs.  Instead of Dracula we get....  Well...  Yeah, that about sums it up.  I was all for a reboot, but I was deeply heartbroken to see Lords of Shadow drop the ball.  Not a bad game mind you, but not Castlevania.

I do not what the Demon Castle Wars of 1999 is but CV III is something I would be surely down with making. That and Castlevania II, Resurrection and a really really really strong remake of Judgment. I thought the game on paper (like so many games) was a brilliant idea and then I saw the whole staff from Konami take one giant simultaneous shit and in heart wrenching pain I realized that what they made was Judgment. Judgment, more like Fudgement.
I do not want to change Castlevania I just want to add to it and make it all that it is but what we have not seen.
Getting back to what I originally stated though I have a new question. I know what you would want to see given your responses but would you want to see that?

Ignoring the story of LoS, I think it was a great marriage of classicvania and metroidvania in a 3D environment (with the exception of the constant climbing and shimmying).  To be honest, I think that there should be more CV games that work like LoS.  LoS is like the N64 CVs and LoI at least in terms of game play.  I would actually like to see some older CV games like SCV4 done in the style of LoS.  Think about it.  Imagine the 4th stage of CV4 with the dungeon that rotates (stage 4-2) and the entire 9th stage (the treasury) in a LoS type setup.  To me, it sounds epic.

Yes! I want both very much. With Ayami Kojima providing the artwork. And Michiru Yamane doing the music for the 1999 game.

I believe it's possible to have metroidvania game play with classicvania death pits and so-on. It's all in the programming and it's doable. I think it would be interesting to play too, if not frustrating from time to time.  :)

I personally wouldn't mind some sort of revisit to Belmont's Revenge, in the vein of  "Rebirth" or Chronicles release of the original. Am I the only one who thinks Christopher needs more love?

More Castlevania Rebirth in general would make me happy.

Mega Man ZX does a good job of fusing classic platforming/action asskickery with Metroidvania-style gameplay. Do that sort of thing with a new Castlevania game and I think it would be just peachy. Simon's Quest already has that free-roaming gameplay to some degree, so I'd like to see an advancement on what that game was doing, but put it together with a map system and more freedom. I just wanna explore some woods, yo.

Combining the two is possible. Recent games weren't very challenging (even OoE and PoR level 1 hard modes), so having some hard palteforming + level up, equipments, different characters, more bosses, etc. can be very cool.

However, I don't know if a game with instant death pits and stuff like that would attract lots of people today. Just imagine: you make a lot of plateforming, kill enemies and just before the end, you are hit by a Bone Pillar fireball and fall in a pit -> Game Over, restart please. Even with save points, it'd be very fustrating. (But I personnally would like it!)

I'd think you'd just restart at the last save point before you died...but if you didn't save then yeah, frustrations galore.

Or they could at least make the enemies an actual threat to the protagonist with their heightened abilities and maneuvering.

-A game starring Soleil.
-A Sorrow game where Soma is much older and more experienced, preferably Julius's age (50+ years old). He wouldn't have to be the protagonist, but it'd be cool to see him at that stage of his life.
-A game starring Quincy Morris and company. Now before you go "No, it shouldn't be canon in the first place", it's not like Hollywood hasn't done this plot to death already. Would a CV retelling be much worse?
-A LoI or CoD style game with proper platforming and level design.

For such a sorrow game, I would like to see a more experienced Soma, but not that old.  Perhaps late 20s/early 30s.
I would also like another 3D games, but more in the style of LoS without all the climbing and shimmying.  No leveling.  Just stage by stage with life and magic upgrades hidden within them.  No titan fights in which you have to climb all over the monster.

I think there is an opportunity to satisfy both gaming markets. If you have Alucard in the game the difficulty is drastically lowered as he has the power to fly out of pits and with his high threshold energy wise hitting spikes is not an issue. If you have a Belmont fighting then you have the challenge for the hard core stick man. But if you must keep it easy just have respawn points near to pit areas. Say using a statue to be a checkpoint or save point.  There need to be more fan service games ala the new Mortal Kombat.

Wait a minute. I just realized something. Aren't there first person shooters out there where you can die with one hit like from a grenade or an air strike? What about being sniped in Halo. This whole thing about instant death not being a good selling point is bull plop. BULL PLOP I tells ya.

For a new 3Dvania, I'd like something with straightforward whip and punch/kick combos that WORK. I don't like a long list of abilities that i don't really care about. Also a strong subweapon centric battle system would be nice. I'm not into the crazy magic powers many of the recent CV heroes have.

-The dagger is your long range projectile/activate switches etc. but can also be used for CQC.
-Holy Water can be poured over the VK creating a flaming blue whip John Morris style for increased damage.
-Axe will be a mid range projectile and has increased damage on flyers. Can be latched to the VK for crowd control
-Stop watch freezes normal enemies and slows down time on boss battles. Can also be used to get through/reset puzzles or make you move faster/slower.
-And finally I'd like to see the crucifix as a spinning windmill of bloody doom.

1.Demon Castle Wars 1999 (The final battle with Dracula for noobs lol)
2.A proper 3D castlevania game that retains all the previous elements of established CV titles.
3.A Symphony of the Night sequel
4.A CV3 Dracula's Curse remake

I'd like to see a CV game starring Quincy Morris and company. They'd probably call it Bram Stoker's Castlevania or Castlevania: The Bram Stoker Chronicles. For another 3D Cv experience I say make the game similar to 64/LoD, but with all the fancy and impressive level designs that LoS used (minus the stuff in LoS that just wasn't CV at all).

I keep seeing people say this, but can someone tell me what other wars were being held aside from Julius & friends vs. Dracula?

I too would like to see Quincy Morris make it into a game (I believe he was even referred to in PoR, was he not?), but I don't think they'd be allowed to call it Bram Stoker's Castlevania without some licensing issues taking effect..

Also I would love to see a game taking place during the Black Plague (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Death), perfect setting for Belmonts hunting vampires, and it could even allude to Dracula being the cause (allowing him to absorb all the vampire/demon souls that the Belmonts kill).

1. The 1999 battle would be great to see.
2. A re-telling of CVIII on a current-gen platform would be FANTASTIC.
3. Put Simon's entire story into 1 big game via the Chronicles treatment. Do the same with Christopher. Give them both proper retail releases for a console.
4. Games showing the story between LoI and CVIII. There's hundreds of years there worth of story that we haven't seen yet.

The story of Bram Stoker's Dracula novel is public domain --there would be zero problems legally if Konami chose to go in that direction.

I don't think the one with Quincy would have to be named that blatantly. I'd say just name it like any other, just have the focus be on what happens with Quincy and his merry band of peeps; I imagine it'd be shortly after they give chase to Dracula, having him escape in a newly reconstituted castle. It'd be a great way to have some kind of choice over different characters you take inside, and part of what ending you get could be based on whether or not Mina succumbs - sort of a race against time if you choose to do it.

If you are gonna do Symphony II then it needs to be done as that proper 3D title. With that said I am not a fan of the protagonist being jacked up on steroids and basically invincible laying as Alucard was an excellent gaming experience. As for the CV3 remake, the more I think about it the more I feel that any characters other than the ones in CVIII would not be cool with me (although I am ok with Simon, Leon or Sonia as far as vampire killers). I would love to see a plat former that turns into a fighter when you get to a boss but done proper unlike Judgment. I like the orb battle system in LOI.

I like this idea a lot. Use the sub-weapons as relics. not only for attack but to get through levels

That is a nifty idea. Swinging the axe at the end of your whip would be just Brutal!
