Pros:
512 Mb of Ram (PS3 only has 256 mb and PSP has 32 (Slim) and 16 (phat))
Touch Screen, Multi-touch
Six Axis Control
Dual Analog
OLED Screen at 960×544
Quad Core Processor
Most Powerful platform next to PC
Region Free
Cross Game Chat
Wifi and 3G support
Cons:
$325 for Wifi model, $390 for 3G model plus Service charges of 3G (Non Japan)
Track Pad proves Gimmicky Nightmare
3 hour Battery Life
Most IP's (at the Moment) are Either PS3 Spin-off or Direct PS3 Port
Extended Battery Peripheral announced instead of delaying the Release and Fixing the Issue (Lazy)
Final Thoughts:
Say Hello to the Next Gen Game Gear, Its too ahead of its time, being more powerful than any console out today and not having enough juice to power it, I really would hate to see what it'l be like when that battery starts dying and that life span goes from 3 hours to barely 1. The Price is WAY too steep and without any Impressive Original IPs at its launch, I don't see this thing doing too well as well as Keeping Developers since this thing Won't be selling too well, If people Aren't Gonna Pay $250 for a 3DS, they Will Surely Not pay $325 for a Vita.
The Vita will be Portable, from one Recharging outlet to the next.
-
If the 3DS can survive, the Vita can survive too, someone will buy it. The PSP was supposed to not last long either, but it has.
-
true that, I really want the Vita to succeed the PSP.
I love my 3DS and I Love my PSP, I need a reason to love the Vita.
-
3 hours? Well, shit. I play my PSP more than 3 hours a day, when I play it. I'd have to have the Vita plugged in the wall the entire time, since I tend to forget to check how much power I have left.
-
If people Aren't Gonna Pay $250 for a 3DS, they Will Surely Not pay $325 for a Vita.
The Vita's price is the same as the 3DS's at launch. 3DS was 25,000 yen when it launched in Japan and the Vita is the same, but 30,000 for the 3g model. The 3DS's price in North America was $250 at launch and the Vita is, once again, the same, but $300 for the 3g model. You're comparing prices from 2 different regions. 25,000 yen does equal $325 dollars, but that doesn't mean that Sony is selling it for that price in NA
The battery life is lame though. It seems like it's normal for handhelds to have low battery life these days, which really sucks. At least there is a way to extend it. I don't see what makes the trackpad a gimmicky nightmare though. I find it to be a welcome addition.
In the end, neither system is perfect, but I believe both will most likely co-exist...as did the DS and PSP.
-
$325-$390 is for the Japanese version (why its so much more expensive, I dunno)
$250-$300 For US version, but the 3G model is Garbage since we aren't getting the Free 3G like Japan (Cause people are too greedy)
I'm actually hoping Hackers can make official Signed programs for the Vita like the PSP
Since the Vita's Specs are so amazing, that's an opportunity for a wide range of perfect emulators (mainly SNES and PS2)
Ys IV was announced and Video'd, I want 10 more Original IPs of that quality and Sont Can have my money.
-
Battery life is 3-5, the same as the 3DS. Both are bad. It's comparable to PSP 1000 battery life. Also, remember that it's 3-5 on the default bright (which can be 2 if it's like on the PSP, meaning you can get some extra juice from it). And Sony (and thirds) have external battery peripherals to extend the battery life. Most of people don't even play their portables outside the house, anyway. The only rushed portable in the market is 3DS.
Trackpad gimmick? Didn't knew the portable was out already... how it is?
Also, 3D is a what? Yeah, gimmick.
Just a tip: wait for the portable to be out and wait for the games that uses it to make a judgement. I can think of interesting implementations for it.
About the line-up not having many new IPS, 3DS had A LOT of ports and remakes. The best selling game of 3DS IS a port. You'll probably compare it to the one announced right now, with Mario Kart 7, Mario Land, etc. Which is the second generation of a portable that's almost 10 months in the market already. Not really a fair comparison at all.
Also, the Vita already has many new IP's, more than 3DS at least. Let's count? (Not counting the new games from existing IPS)
- @field
- Little Deviants
- Yuusha no kiroku (TBD)
- Monster Radar
- Army Corps of Hell
- LORD of APOCALYPSE
- SUMIONI
- Jurassic HUNTER
- Ragnarok Odyssey
- DRAGON'S CROWN
- Escape Plan
- Alien Spidy
- GRAVITY RUSH
- Sound Shapes
- Reality Fighters
How many ports (not counting remakes, just ports and enhanced ports, not counting multiplatform releases too)? Let's see:
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend
Virtua Tennis 4 - World Tour Edition
Disgaea 3 Return
DREAM C CLUB ZERO PORTABLE
ULTIMATE MARVEL VS.CAPCOM 3
MICHAEL JACKSON THE EXPERIENCE HD
MALICIOUS
ZONE OF THE ENDERS HD EDITION
METAL GEAR SOLID HD EDITION
Little Busters! Converted Edition
NINJA GAIDEN Σ
Moe Moe Great War Modern Version ++
And that's it. From 100 games listed to be released on the launch window.
Let's see the 3DS ones? New IP's:
- Steel Diver
- Heroes of Ruin
- The Hidden
- Cubic Ninja
- Beyound Labirinth
- Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
- Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
- Rodea The Sky Soldier
Ports:
-Asphalt 3D
-Bit.Trip.Saga
-BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II
-Super Stree Fighter 4 3D
-Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns
-LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
-Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D
-Michael Jackson: The Experience
-One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP
-The Sims 3
-UnchainBlades ReXX
-SpongeBob SquigglePants 3D
-Star Fox 64 3D
-Tales of the Abyss 3D
-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
There where even more, announced but they were not released yet. The fact is: 3DS uses a very similar strategy than Vita is using, full of games aimed at core. And in the start, both have lots and lots of ports, because that's normal for any portable at all. This shit about "console games" is the biggest BULLSHIT I've ever saw (and you're not the first at all). DS has a lot of games that would be better on the screens (even without touch controls).
You're saying that you don't see how this portable will stay in the market with what is announced so far... well, that's about the same question I made for 3DS. The launch line-up was the worst line-up I've EVER SAW in my life. And the worst from the Nintendo portables to date.

Forgetting Bravery Default : Flying Fairy on the 3DS and Culdcept for the 3DS
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is Obviously not a New Ip, and really shouldn't exist period.
Ragnarok Odyssey isn't a new IP, its basically a port of Ragnarok Online 2 coming out soon (Proof: I'm a former RO Fan)
Jurassic HUNTER is a Port or Spin-off to Jurassic: The Hunted (proof: Activision)
Dragon's Crown is for PS3 and Vita, Not an IP
Yuusha no kiroku has NOTHING on it, not even a news article on development.
Vita Original IPs: 10
3DS Original IPs: 9
the 3DS isn't that far behind.
Besides, the 3DS is having a few games that'll use the Augmented Reality feature that gives it an edge over everything else.
And With Games Like the New Super Mario Land 3D will utilize the 3D as an aid for gameplay.
The Vita on the other hand needs to Drop that Aweful Uncharted Game to be taken seriously.
The Trackpad.... I still can't warm up to it Since I firmly believe that the Vita Should have had Triggers instead
while the launch titles are good, the ones releaved at TGS actually made me think about getting one.

Really have forgot about these two.
Skylander is ... oops, you're right... it didn't even look like a Spyro game when I saw the gameplay on youtube. You're right and I agree with you.
LOL, Ragnarok Odyssey isn't a port man, it's an entirely different game. It doens't have nothing to do with Ragnarok Online 2. It's more like God Eater/Monster Hunter type of game than Ragnarok Online at all.
Yeah, Dragon Crown is a IP. A multiplatform IP. IPs doesn't need to be exclusive at all. Also, Vita and PS3 will be cross playable online.
Just because Yuusha no kiroku don't have nothing on it, doesn't mean it's not a new IP.
Vita does AR even better than 3DS (Sony is working with AR since 2003, with PS2).
Playstation Vita TGS 2011 Keynote (Augmented Reality Tech) - Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEt1MpLuJdc#ws)
And I agree with the Super Mario Land thing. It's the first game I think that using 3D will be really necessary, instead of an option. And looks great too. Mario Kart and it are my most anticipated games for 3DS.
You lost me on the awful Uncharted... the most praised game in TGS and by everyone that see it, the game is amazing and is the showcase of the Vita right now. There's a difference of you not liking a game and a game being bad. I don't think you're being reasonable at all.
I don't understand your comment about triggers at all... the Vita has R and L, most than what is needed at all. The thing has a touchscreen, developers will use it.

The Point of Uncharted, Its Not a Bad Game, no, The Graphic Quality is the best I've seen for a Handheld, but the fatal flaw is its Vita Functions, They are ALL useless, trust me, People will rather Press a Button than to tap the screen, and would rather press up on the analog than to use the trackpad, The Game Seriously needs to implement the functions to where the Player wants to use them and have Areas where the player NEEDS to use them, When a Function has a purpose and a significant meaning of being used, its no longer a gimmick.
The Point For Ragnarok is that Its NOT an Original IP, Its Still based off of Ragnarok Online, even Sporting the Same Classes.
Dragon's Crown Being on the PS3 Marks the Vita Version as a Port since its not being Developed Specifically for the Vita
Sonic Generations is an Example of the handheld version NOT being a port.
Since there is no News of Yuusha no kiroku actually being Developed, there is a chance it might not happen.
I must say, the AR on the Vita is Applied Better than the 3DS, but the 3DS has developers making AR games.
I will say that this is gonna be one hell of a Handheld Generation
I'm really looking forward how the 3DS and Vita will one-up each other to make hendheld Gold!
-
All I know is that I must buy both a 3DS and a Vita. I have been unimpressed by the 3DS titles so far, but that is about to change with Mario and what not. As for the Vita, it just looks damn delicious. I'm not interested in Uncharted or stuff like that, but if the PSP is any indication, there will be tons of interesting obscure games for the Vita. And since it's region free I'm gonna import like crazy.
Bottom line: I'm a handheld gaming fanboy. And I need every handheld to feel like a complete person, basically.

It's fun what you said. Because, you know, EVERYTHING you said about Uncharted IS OPTIONAL. This is stated like, everytime they show the game. You don't need to use anything like that at all.
I understand your point of Ragnarok. It's a new game based on the Ragnarok IP, you're right.
Dragon's Crown IS A NEW IP, a Multiplatform one. Sorry, but you're wrong and I'll not agree with you here. The game isn't released on the PS3 already and will be ported to Vita later, they'll be released at the same time. Hence, multiplatform.
The development ambient for it is the same, as they've already revealed. It's easy to make multiplatform games between PS3 and Vita. We'll have more games like that. For example, Ruin, a new multiplatform IP just as much as this one.
About Yuusha... we have, like, 3 months to wait for that yet, a lot of time considering the game is on the launch list (not launch window list), it must mean it's already being developed.

The Vita will be Portable, from one Recharging outlet to the next.
Yeah batteries are falling behind in their evolution. Giv'em fancy names and a new look, but when you get down to it's internal components, it's still the same Alkaline Lithium core. If ever their was a need for innovation then I'd choose the battery. Scratch that! We don't need any more batteries. What we need is a portable power source the size of a battery. This would make all portable systems 'truly portable'.
Also does the vita have 'out to TV' support like the PSP 2000/3000? Cause I still wants to play my game on the big screen.

Nope. At least, not right now. Maybe they'll release a cradle with tv-out someday, or maybe in the next revision.
This is the best battery life Vita could have with all it's features. It's already using a 2.200mAH one (compared to 3DS's 1300mAH one).
Also, your guys concept about portable is funny (funny as in wrong). Portable doesn't equals Pocketeability. If you can bring it with you to other ambients with ease, them it's a portable. An iPad is a portable, just not a pocketable one.

@Maedhros On Uncharted, True, but it also shows how some developers have no clue on how to implement new things where it functional and not a pain to use.
On Dragon's Crown, Yes it IS a New IP, But this Falls Under the whole Multiplatform thing, The Exclusive IPs Allow the Vita to Shine By Itself
Reason to that, I REALLY Hate the PS3 Porting, I don't see any point in it because most people are just gonna get the console version anyways and Its pretty much Sayng that you have to fork over $100+ in Buying the Same Game Twice just to get the "Full Effect"
@X
I'm pretty Sure it Does have TV Out, with the right Cable that is....

We don't know if people will get the console version. I see most of people wanting Vita version of Dragon's Crow, for one. It really depends of the game and the person at all. I know I'll not buy the PS3 version of these games at all, because I prefer portability. Also, the controls on Vita can ensure things that the PS3 can't do at all. There's no way to know if this strategy will not work this time, the PSP and Vita are totally different beasts, with different inputs and features.
There's a market for people who wants console ports, if there wasn't, PSP wouldn't have outselled DS first in the west, when it was launched (people forget this fast and conveniently). The problem was the lack of proper controls/dual analog gamimg for games like Resistance and other that have appeal with western market, because of these, most of the west forgot the PSP.
In Japan, this problem don't even exist, since people prefer gaming in portables there for most of the part.
Also, there are games that are coming integrated with the Vita version in one package, I'm sure. Ruin is the first one, but I can see packages of $60~80 for PS3+Vita versions incoming.
And there's no tv out or tv out cable disponible.
-
that's very true on the U.S. and Japan being two completely different Markets
In Japan, The Xbox360 doesn't sell, however the U.S. Sells the Xbox360 too much (most of the sales are replacements)

That's a really good, informative interview. Love how Yoshida doesn't jump around the questions and actually answers truthfully, even admitting to mistakes. Also, when asked about Nintendo, he doesn't start bashing the competition like some interviewees tend to do.

I believe the Handhelds Have to co-exist, this isn't a console war when the majority of the games out there are on both systems.
The DS and PSP always had something to go back to and I can't determine which was better of the two without making them even.
The 3DS and PSV are the same case, with only 2 games in common (MGS3 and maybe Monster Hunter 3) They will both be very different from each other.
But the one thing that is more effective than anything is advertisement.
If God of War 3 Sold that much, it was all advertisement (GoW3 was a complete crock of shit with polished graphics), Whilst Infamous (fucking superior) is relatively in the shadows.
In the Vita's Cause, Uncharted, a Series where the Story is more important and remebered than the gameplay is a very unwise choice to flagship.
oh, the 3DS has a problem too, Where the hell is Kid Icarus? that was the FIRST 3DS title I've seen before it's release.
Both are sprting very good titles, It really sucks that they are in the awkward state of ports and remakes for the sake of sales since give or take 10 original titles aren't enough to sell the handheld alone to a wide audience.
Since the 3DS has those guaranteed titles, and Smash Bros 4 (along with wii U) plus great new ones coming soon I'm sold
Vita has Bioshock and Ys, LBP, Like the PSP, its gonna need a few more titles, but Its still gonna be a buy.
Note: SHAME on you Square-Enix, Pikmin for the Vita? C'mon! you guys are supposed to make Good Handheld games!
-
Army Corps of Hell looks interesting, I would try it. I'll probably get it somewhere, not on launch though.
-
Sumioni looks like it plays almost like a 2D Okami. Hope this get brought over here.

Gravity Daze looks good as well. The gravity controlling aspect, if done well, might be really neat.

Ragnarok Odyssey is looking to be a nice game too. I'm interested because it's from Gamearts, and they created one of the RPGs I like the most: Grandia.

It's Gamearts?! Really?!?!? My username comes from my favorite video game series, Lunar....also made by Gamearts. That does look pretty awesome. I'll have to keep an eye on that.
-
I would kill for another Okami game.....
Impressively, unlike it console counterpart, all those games run at 60fps!

Love Lunar too.
Yes, it's from Gamearts (Gungho bought them, that's why we almost don't see games from the series anymore... =[ ). That's mainly why I'm interested.
