Title: Michael Dorn (Worf from Star Trek) involved with Castlevania movie

Moving from Castle to Castlevania, tell us about your more current projects…

Dorn: Castlevania is a movie that Marina got me involved with. It’s based on a video game. People have been trying to get this thing done for a long time and they finally got the producers together that want to do it. They finally got the OK from the owners, and so they’re doing it. It’s a fun little part. It’s four days, and I’m playing a werewolf that’s been around for a gajillion years who works for this vampire. It’s not too far from Worf because there’s a lot of killing and jumping and sword fights and everything.

What is this with Trek people being connected to the Castlevania movie? :D Wasn't Jonathan Frakes rumored to play Sonia's grandfather at one point?

Yes Johnathan Frakes was rumored to be in it. That was a long time ago. I really don't want this movie to happen, cause I think it'll be terrible like the Resident Evil movies if it still is the same director. I'm sure it's still going to happen, and I'm sure it'll be awful, but I guess I'll try to remain hopeful. Maybe this guy could be Cornell in an LoS movie?

Not only that, but he mentions that Marina got him into it, by which I assume he means Marina Sirtis, who was Counselor Troi on Star Trek:TNG. So presumably she has or had some part to play in front of or behind the camera on this as well. Also "a gajillion" I assume that's an exact number lol. Well this might be a so bad it's good movie but I wouldn't hope for more than that. When you've got werewolf servants you're getting into "The Return of the Vampire " territory and away from explicit storyline in the games.

Nah, he mentioned it's a 4 day shoot so it's a cameo. Knowing Anderson the character is likely to be named Cornell, but it won't resemble the Cornell we love from LoD in the slightest. It's interesting that Dorn says he's a servant "for this Vampire" so presumably the villain for this film won't be Dracula, figures. I would just hope they keep to the Castle setting instead of doing something stupid like bringing it to New York. Teasing the audience with a proper fantasy movie in a castle only to cut to "New York, Present Day" after the credits are over or whatever is one of the most ass-chaffingly annoying tropes in the entire genre.

I mean they're going to make a big, dumb, loud and very expensive movie here. They might as well make a big, dumb, loud very expensive movie called Castlevania in a bloody castle. Instead of cutting to present day like so many movies do because it's cheaper and easier to shoot than a period piece.

Knock a Star Trek cast in a Castlevania movie all you want, but don't try to deny that they all assembled together before to make one hell of a show that was meant for kids but enjoyed by teens and adults:

Gargoyles - Season 1, Episode 01 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7Rz9aDhl-k#)

Frakes was vile billionaire playboy thief Xanatos, Marina was Goliath's mate Demona, and Dorn was Goliath's former lieutenant Coldstone, Brent Spiner was the mischievous Puck, Kate Mulgrew as fairy queen Titania, Levar Burton as the giant spider Anansi, Colm Meany as the father of Rory Dugan, Avery Brooks as the alien Nokkar, and Nichelle Nichols as Elisa's mother; as well as actors who guest starred in Star Trek, like Matt Frewer, John Rhys-Davies, long-time voice actor Frank Welker, William Sheppard, Michael Bell, Dave Warner, Tony Jay, Paul Winfield, Gerrit Graham, Paul Winfield, Clyde Kusatsu, Clancy Brown, Salli Richardson, and Diedrich Baeder.

That said, the werewolf bit is cringe-worthy, I agree.

Speaking of werewolves, I finally watched "Despicable Me" this weekend. If you've seen it, you should know how that tied in with werewolves.

I see some people already think that this movie will be 100% bad and nothing else. I won't be so...adamant about it. Waht if it will be good movie on its own, but a bad Castlevania movie? I will be content with that, since if anything, the past experiences with video games movies leave me with little hope for it to be "good video game adaption".
Though given past records of this director, I won't be so sure that it will be a good movie on its own, but I prefer to see it or at least know more about it, rather than insta-bash it with little to data.

Any hope that Castlevania movie from any director will closely resemble any game is futile. Thanks for different mediums and general need of material adaption. And the fact that there is many styles in Castlevania. Someone will be disappointed anyway.

^Not sure if that is what you were getting at but I agree that the movie's first priority is to capture the feel of the games and make more direction references (like storyline references and characters to a certain extent). It doesn't have to resemble one specific game, but the basic foundation should be there at least. And obviously the movie should share the same concept of that of the games. They shouldn't make it a Bram Stoker's Dracula rip-off, like Anderson's initial idea.

As for bashing, I'm trying really hard to stay positive. I liked Wan's view on the series which made me interested in how he would execute his ideas, but I'm kind of worried about Anderson's involvement. And I'm not just basing that on his past (video game) movies if you know what I mean.

It seems Anderson's going to destroy Monster Hunter now. Maybe CV is safe for a while.

I am trying to say, that if it somehow, despite all odds ends up as just a good movie, with little resemblance to the Castlevania - its OK, since so far there were only handful examples of translating video games to movies, that ended more or less decently. At least there will be good movie about vampire hunters with the name "Castlevania" and even, if it will be hardly related to the games, it is still promotion that can inpire some people to get familliar with the series.
Though this director certainly doesn't give me a lot of hope for something closely resembling CV, not after RE series with Mary Sue for a main character. I will laugh Out Loud, if the main hero of the movie will be Sonia Belmont portrayed by...

I am personally not even sure what kind of Castylevania movie I want to see - there is too much material and most of it could turn awesome in the right hands. The closest thing for a Castlevania movie was Van Hellsing, but that was mish-mash, that ended rather horribly.

Yeah, who knows now though. Besides he's still the producer, the guy who in a lot of ways really runs the show and tells the director what to do with and where to take the movie.
I prefer to be a pessimist when it comes to things I love getting adapted by artistically bankrupt (or at best disinterested) moneymen. Get far fewer disappointments and a couple pleasant surprises that way. But hey it could be worse, we could be dealing with Micheal Bay/Platinum Dunes. Anderson's RE movies are awful but at least they're semi-watchable as really bad blockbusters if you forget or don't care that they're supposed to be Resident Evil.

Some folks think it's filming right now. Is there any truth to this? If so, could it be that this is actually the animated film? Or perhaps something else entirely separate from that and Paul WTF Anderson's movie?

Oh I'm not dismissing any actor because they were on TNG, I quite like the show and all of the main cast were good in it. I think some people could mistake their range as limited because in a lot of ways the characters didn't develop much beyond where they started in the course of the show, but that was because Star Trek is more setting than character oriented that way, not any fault of the actors.

As for the werewolf servant thing well, Dracula has, depending on his particular incarnation/strength at the time power to command, summon and attract all the creatures of darkness. Saying "Oh he's got this Werewolf butler" or whatever would be a mistake, but of course he does have werewolves who serve him. Then again, since Dorn apparently couldn't even remember the vampire he's working for's name this probably isn't Dracula in the movie.

Yeah, I noticed that and cringed a bit.

My worry is that the impetus behind this is LoS and its generic movieable quality (no offense intended, I just don't like it as much) and so it won't really even try to jive with anything older? I mean Castlevania 'canon' is kind of a mess at the best of times and I don't expect a movie to really take it into account especially, but also the fact there's a notable werewolf, etc. It's hard for me to think of a way this could be done right, but I'm interested nonetheless.

Eh... I gotta say I'm a bit skeptical about this.

Wait, no. Not a bit. A lot. I have said it before, I'll say it again: video game movies do not work out very well. I think it's just a very tricky translation, because the two aren't like books and movies or comics and movies.

That being said, if this is legit and it's really happening, I'm getting my cape and wearing it in the movie theater, or rental store...

I disagree with you, they doesnt even play the game and say that type of thing as a excuse in the majority of times. The problem is that instead of followiing the obvious they try to do some things that they find cool or that will make the fans happy and in the majority of times they are wrong.

Its so simple to do a good film about CV: A Belmont enter in Castlevania, battle various monsters and fight Dracula in the end. If they make it be a good film THEN they try to do new things based in the things that are really cool from the 1st movie, but no they are all HURR DURR lets make a super woman fight zombies (RE).

True, a lot of it is laziness. And to me, at least, the fact that there seem to be a bit of snobbery around video games doesn't help matters. I think quite a few people write off stories by virtue of them just being a video game, hence 'let's not try, no one important will care' and, voila, the RE movies.

Though I suspect that might just be the whole 'video games are a relatively newish form of media' as compared to the modern comic. Which, again, is weird to me because I'd like to think the majority of people are like my dad- not a gamer, but still respects how far we've come from the first generation (seriously, he regales me with tales of how his dad figured out a way to cheat at pong).

/nonsensical time over  (and I enjoyed the SMB movie as a kid too. Ha.)

Though I suspect that might just be the whole 'video games are a relatively newish form of media' as compared to the modern comic.

I agree a lot with that statement. I think video games have to age in order to be more accepted. As far as I can tell, the console video games got their huge boom during the baby boomer's children's generation, and now that most us baby-boomers' babies are turning into adults ourselves the market is changing. The media LOVES to present video games as "nerd stuff" and "only something the uncool dweebs do", but that is slowly changing as video games are becoming more and more successful, which I speculate is due (at least in part) to the first real gaming generation turning into adults.

If you look back to early voice-acting in video-games, they were usually dismal affairs, with God-awful voice-acting and people too embarrassed to be known they had "stooped" to such a low-level. Look back at some video games like Symphony of the Night and Resident Evil, and you can see some examples of bad voice-acting (although some of them ARE trying their damnedest) . True that exceptions DID exist (Legacy of Kain and Starcontrol 2 are great examples), but they were just that--exceptions. Listen to the original Resident Evil and its REmake and you can see the world of difference in the voice-actors, as video games have become more popular and it isn't so stigmatized. Popular comedians like Dave Chapelle and celebrities like Mila Kunis admit they play stuff like World of Warcraft--despite the media's unfavorable portrayal.

E-sports is still a growing community, too. In countries like Korea, there are Starcraft II celebrities who are widely-hailed, and even have entire events dedicated to watching them play on a giant screen. Hell there are countries (like Korea) who PAY and ENDORSE people to play SCII and represent their country. Even here in the U.S., there are things like the NASL (North American Star League) which offers a membership to view SC2 matches and tournaments (in fact my brother has paid for all 4 seasons). And there are other events like WCG (World Cyber Games) and other burgeoning E-sports competitions that are slowly making names for themselves. On the latest season of NASL, the commentators mentioned that ESPN--freakin' ESPN--was considering putting them on one of its channels, but the commentators speculated that the older generations are not yet ready to accept the growing community of competitive-gaming as it is. With a large number of the baby-boomers approaching an age where they are ready to retire, the newer generation is ready to take over--a generation that is more accepting of video games.

The long point I'm trying to make is that I think there WILL be some faithful video-game-to-movie adaptations, but just not yet. Things like comics and books can get made into good, successful movies; just look at how profitable Nolan's Batman trilogy, Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy, and the Harry Potter series were. Comics and books are "accepted" so people take serious attempts to make good (and faithful) movie-adaptations, and I feel that video-games will eventually be too. Just not yet. Within our lifetime though, we may see them become popular enough to attract a serious director's eye.

Bump for an insignificant little detail. I listened to the part the podcast where the actor revealed he was working on the CV movie and he mentions the werewolf character he is playing is called "Thane" or whatever. I wonder if we'll have more awkwardly named OCs in this movie? But I'm glad they didn't call him Cornell.

Also, he mentioned they were filming the movie right now, or at least, they were in september. Is anybody else also worried this movie slipped so silently into production?

I admit it's a little disconcerting that production on this movie is happening pretty low key. I don't know if it's just because word wasn't as wide spread back then as it is now, but the first RE movie seemed to have a pretty silent production.

But at the same time, I'm already moving forward with this having the lowest expectations as possible. As much as I'd love for this movie to come out great, I also know that the likely hood for that to occur is slim to none.

On that note, who's planning on going opening night? How about...dressed up on opening night?  ;D I might, for giggles and all that.

I don't expect many news regarding development this movie. I don't see why creation of the movie based on Castlevania, should be in the headlines - it's not that big afterall and it is another movie based on the video game, hence low expectations. Sadly.  ???
