Title: Face it, no woman will ever understand my love for Castlevania xD
Post by: jestercolony on April 24, 2013, 04:34:33 PM
Seriously - they do not understand why I play the series. So they ask me what it's about, and I explain it to them. I get so in-depth to the storylines (depending on the canon) that I become to passionate about it and I get a nerdon just speaking about it. And they're like... "You are such a dork..." /rolls eyes

And I'm all

le sigh

You don't just understand...

And it  makes me go /sadface

Surely the numerous women here understand.

Though I'm supposing none are enticed by your nerdon.

Are you kidding?  I was just talking to a friend of mine about Castlevania, Final Fantasy, and Zelda yesterday and how much I love those series and why.

One of my favorite youtubers is Archengeia, who makes videos that are several hours long where he just talks about how much he loves game X and way.  I've watched some of them multiple times; I like listening to other people who are equally passionate about the things I like.

Don't worry Jester. I understand your love of Castlevania. Being one of my favorite game series, I am also very nerdy passionate about it. If you think it's hard being a guy trying to explain Castlevania to girls, trying being a girl like attempting to explain Castlevania to pretty much anyone without them thinking you're a dork. It's harder being a girl liking this kind of stuff, believe me.  :(

Only because according to popular stereotypes you're a mythical creature. Popular culture at large hasn't caught up to the explosion of women into geek culture that has happened over the last 15 years. Starting with anime and games but now encompassing pretty much all of nerdom. This is why you still have shows such as The Big Bang Theory making jokes like "Women? Who read comics? Pshaw!"

Of course the prevalence of insecure testosterone fueled 12 year olds, and 30 year olds who act like 12 year olds, on the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is Xbox Live also discourages women from being open about their gender. A culture where boys/men who don't have the balls to do catcalls in real life (or even talk to a girl) show each other how manly they are by sexual harassment over a headset.

Not to mention the fact that a not-insignificant portion of the male population in nerd culture blames women for their inability to attract the mate they feel they're entitled to. And like other misogynists have decided as a result that all women are out to trick and manipulate them. This is where you get the uproar over "fake nerd girls" it's like "What? A woman who likes the same things I like?! This cannot be, I cast you out vile temptress!"

I think the best way for nerdy women to reverse this stereotype though is to just keep doing what you're doing. Be comfortable and be yourself. Guys who dress up as superheroes aren't grilled on the history of the character so if you cosplay or wear a nerdy shirt you don't have to prove shit to anyone, if some guy says you need a quiz to prove you're a "real fan" and you don't want to bother disproving him just tell him to get bent or ignore him. Eventually people will catch on that not only do you actually exist, but that nerdy women like you are not as rare as they used to think.

PS -
I do think there are some women who pretend to like things they don't because nerd culture is/has recently been "fashionable" (or maybe because they're an actress and the nerd market is the niche they've found) but here's the thing - there are lots of guys doing the exact same thing probably more of them in fact, and they don't get 1/1000th the shit and accusations that women do. If a guy says he's trying to get into comics or whatever it's like "Welcome to the club brother!" while a woman might get asked "Why are you doing this? What are you up to?" Nerdy Guys, the prevalence of the boys club mentality reflects poorly on all of us and it needs to stop.

Copy and paste what Kaori said.
Being a "nerd" caused me several troubles during high school with other "popular" girls, who thought the things I liked were stupid.
Not to mention the difficult to find a couple.
And just because of that prejudice, because I've been to other places and I could find couples there (like sometimes when I was on holidays).
So, it's pretty common I guess to get that feedback from a society that thinks that it's easier to disqualify than to try to understand that we are all different in our own way.
They think of every one of us like isolated individual people, instead of just another group of people.

This angers me.  IIRC a catcall is like a whistle right I refuse to do that I prefer to get up and talk to them that's just me. A day ago right before basketball class I was talking to three girls( two who were fellow basketball players) and the day before I was talking to two girls (twins) that were in my  math class back in high school ( one of them use to run their fingers through what use to be my curly hair before I got a hair cut) and awhile before that I was talking to an other girl in my piano class about what song she was going to play. Hell I even got a number from a girl in basketball but she said she was not interested in dating( yet I heard something about her going to a dodger game or something with some other guy that kind of put me in a sour mood but what ever I still talk to her, also I'm new to trying to get a date my love life in HS was a complete low to nonexistent hell it still is sort of ). Regardless I use to be somewhat shy talking to most girls but some where down the line I snapped and said f*&^ it to my self. Now it's just a matter of being bold.

Edit: Also wearing nice clothes helps for instance I got some new clothes recently and a couple hats. Girls love hats and I'm not talking about freaking baseball caps those things are annoying. But most of all who wants a drab guy?  "Every girls crazy bout a sharp dressed man"

Yeah a catcall is a form of verbal sexual harassment were you would have somebody yelling out in public to someone they've probably never met "Hey baby why don't we X" or whistling and making lewd comments about their anatomy. (Complimenting someone on their looks is one thing, singling them out and yelling in public about how sexually pleasing they look and what kind of sex acts you'd like to do to them like they're not even a person is another.) It's basically the IRL version of a lot of the taunting you're likely to hear on XBL. Here's an article if you care to read a little more on it http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/06/living/street-harassment (http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/06/living/street-harassment)

Bold yes, in the sense that you must have self confidence. Remember if you want to get someone else to like you, you need to make sure you like yourself first.

I remember the cat call because of the murder of emmett till because of a short paragraph in my political science book.

Like my self... I never really did not understand why girls do not like me in this way. I have not even gotten my first kiss yet :'(

I wonder why is it because I'm a big guy? ( and no I'm not some stagnated guy I play sports and hell I have a football ring and a trophy from lacrosse! I do not like to slack and I play good defense in basketball)

For the same reason, I'm not much into online multiplayer.  I'd much rather play with people I know personally next to me.

I'd stream videos if it weren't for the fact that every time I've done so the result always seems to be a # of male viewers telling me to take off my clothes. You'd think there were enough explicit materials on the internet for people to be satisfied... >_>

Yes you gotta like who you are first, some people think getting a partner will solve all their problems and it doesn't work like that. No one wants to constantly have to cheer up a sad-sack, when you have to do that you're not a partner- you're a nanny. This is not to say if you become depressed your partner will leave you, in fact they won't if they're worth having. Just that being depressed might not be the best time to look for love.

Personally, the woman who is the love of my life did help me pull out of a deep years-long depression but we were just friends at the time, we didn't become romantically involved until years later. (She's also the one who got me into gaming and is still a bigger and better gamer than me.) It sounds to me like you're putting too much pressure on it, and too much stock into designated timetables of when these things are "supposed to happen". They happen at their own pace. Don't place a lot of pressure on finding "the one" or whatever, just make friends and maybe you will click with some of them, maybe you won't but you will have another friend then, it's a win-win.

That's terrible, I'm sorry to hear that. The only multiplayer game I really play is Killing Floor but the community there seems to be pretty good about this, though I don't usually play in servers with mics enabled so maybe they're worse.

Hell I remember get my butt handed to me in KofXIII IIRC by a girl who used kim( she was kind of a meanie when I lost I forgot about the rule you lose get to the back of the line arcades can be brutal, oh but I got her back in kof 2002 thank you Athena, Mai, and Yuri  :)

Yeah when I find her or vice versa I want it to be a 50/50 relationship also she better be ready because I want three kids  ;D

Also it's kind of odd you say that my dad has said some things very similar to what you have said like the friends part.

Haha, good way to put it. That is very true.

It's really sad that things turned out that way though. Shit like that just has to stop; Both in the fanbase, and in the industry itself. I'm really ashamed you had to go through that at all.

This conversation is reminding me of a song on the subject of geek shame/lack of confidence by nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot

MC Frontalot - Shame of the Otaku (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foGYO9nEFSQ#ws)

You can get all of the lyrics here http://frontalot.com/index.php/?page=lyrics&lyricid=55 (http://frontalot.com/index.php/?page=lyrics&lyricid=55)
But the Japanese verses say:

This world has walls, a ceiling.
Outside, cars drive by.
The sunlight roasts my flesh.
Even a bird who chases a rainbow
finds itself blindsided by a plane.

This world has walls, a ceiling.
With the glow of our LCD screens,
we greet the morning.
IRL, lacking the sun,
we have no need for the sky.

It's about how a lot of us nerds do have this problem with confidence and tend to retreat into the imaginary worlds we love rather than confronting the problems, which only makes it worse when it comes to things like liking yourself and having the confidence to find and attract that special someone. I know I've been guilty of this.

I remember when i was working on a video games store, when a girl came inside with her parents and saw Castlevania CoD and said, wow!!!!! Castlevania, i can't believe it, i wanted for my collection and i 've been left with my mouth open, because i didn't believe that there was a girl in my country that would love castlevania as much as i do, but i didn't try to make some contact with her.........and now that i thinking of it, maybe i should.......

My tactic for the womans and they will love castlevania its to tell her that are characters like this:
(click to show/hide)

most of the time it works and she will want to know more of that characters and then i put all the history of castlevania XD. for girls who read this do not take it wrong i dont say that all the girls are like this but its a start to know about castlevania

Hmm, that's pretty close minded. A girl I know goes on and on to me about her favorite games, and they are Visual Novel Otome games like Haruka, which are clearly marketed toward females, where the main objective is to romance men. While I don't play games like that, I understand the appeal of them and I can appreciate some things about them, like the cool character designs and some of the music.

I groove to this theme from Angelique sometimes. I kinda' dig the easy going and dreamy mood of Angelique, which is a dating sim : )

My girlfriend used to oppose my love for CV. This did not last however because her understanding of the game developed more. She's not really close minded but wondered why i would wait until night or in bed to play these games. I didn't even need to use words; i simply let the game speak for itself. So now she is working her way through SotN all by herself and NO i will not help her figure out how to open BLUE DOORS! So let them understand it at their own pace is my suggestion. Not only will the love unfurl with the game but its funny watching said girl get owned by Slogra and Gaibon 47 times ;D

I love Castlevania, and I was lucky enough to have male friends that don't look down on women and really appreciate it when a woman knows her share of nerdy stuff. Or is it just because I'm in the academe and video games and other nerdy stuff are some of our exhaust vents. Hehehe.

Though, way back in high school, it was a different story.  :'(

that don't look down on women and really appreciate it when a woman knows her share of nerdy stuff.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why that wouldn't be the case. Especially for the older crowd, women just generally didn't take an interest in it. We wanted them to, but it didn't happen. Now it happens and we shun it?

Thinking about the sexual harassment a little more, specifically the 'nudes plz' type: I can see where that may stem from. Once a nerd guy finds a girl who is into these things, they may want to try their luck. Unfortunately nerd guys sometimes jump the gun on these things, and get side tracked with trying to hit it out of the park instead of taking their time with things. Nervousness? Maybe. Inexperience? Certainly.

It is totally unacceptable though, don't get me wrong, but I think thats the source of it. Don't stand for that shit either way. Call it out when you see it. It is NOT acceptable. That goes for other guys too. Put the shame on the aggressor. Let them know it's not welcome behavior. Silence is condoning!

That goes for any harassment really. It wont stop if we all sit idly by. I call that shit out when I see it. Stand up for what's right, and you may just change some minds along the way. I came to these conclusions on my own over time, but I know some people who changed only because they were shown that the behavior wasn't acceptable and it made them rethink things.

Me myself? I was in a unique situation in High School; although I was open about my "nerdiness" to everybody, I was still grouped in with the "popular" clique. I didn't care that people knew about my interests in Star Wars, Castlevania, etc. and although I wasn't really into extra-curricular activities (sports, etc.) I still hung out with those that were, went to various parties, etc. But I still hung out with the "nerd clique" too.

That's part of it in a lot of cases, but you can't underestimate the importance of this bullshit as a form of posturing for the benefit of the other males in the audience.
But you are right, I think it was the humor site cracked.com who pointed out that a lot of the worst offenders for this sort of thing have had two sources of experience with women - their mothers and porn. So their views of how to actually interact with the opposite sex are rather skewed, to put it mildly.

I'm happily engaged to the mother of my baby and let me just say that CV or any video game has never caused a problem for us. She's not in to every game I play, but that's ok because I'm not in to everything she is like shows and games. It's more important that you love each other and get along we'll. being in a relationship with someone who shares every interest with you could be very boring.

Besides... CV is a 1 player game anyways.. Lol. She makes fun of me for my nerdy games and I make fun of her for her nerdy shows. Haha. It's fun to have differences. Try not to look for someone with prerequisites in mind and jut go with the flow!

Fear not, for the women of gaming exist....and the female enthusiasts of Castlevania, though rarer, will still be that diamond in the rough to seek out.

Guys will give me weird enough looks when they find out how much of a geek I am with my knowledge of gaming, particularly oldschool. I will say it's kind of funny as hell when they ask me about my Castlevania tattoo on my ankle, I explain what it is, and they get that look like they're a mixture of confused, intimidated, clueless, and the slightest bit curious. (more-so if they're a fellow gamer) The facial reactions I've gotten are priceless.

I'll never forget one time in college a guy wandered into our social group of geeks, trying to weasel in by spouting random gamer talk. He found out I was into Castlevania and, trying to be a hotshot, proceeded to try to insist that Richter was not playable in Symphony of the Night. When I corrected him, he asked me something along the lines of "Well, what makes you think you're right?", in a way that implied my knowledge of gaming was inferior because I was a girl. My friend who was sitting behind me proceeded to bust out laughing out loud right at the guy with a "Dude, you're out of your fucking league" connotation to it. I told him to go up to the computer lab and look up "The Castlevania Dungeon" and let me know what he found. He never returned.

It's those days I live for, as a female gamer. =)

I don't really hang out in nerd circles because sometimes they're a little too nerdy—or more like just focused on one or two factions of nerddom and taking that to the extreme (whereas I'm fairly branched all over)—so I'm not familiar with guys scoffing at female gamers/nerds outside of the intrawiebz, but if that's really what goes down, I don't really get it. All my life I've always wanted to hang out with cute gals who are into all the geeky stuff that I like, because ideally I'd date or marry a friggin' fellow geek who hopefully shares enough common interests with me that we're not always at odds. I DUNNO, MAYBE THAT'S JUST ME THOUGH.

I DUNNO, MAYBE THAT'S JUST ME THOUGH.

I hear that. Would be kind of hard for a woman being with me, a CEO of a game company, and not having any interest in game sor related media I'd imagine, haha.

Well, there's a difference between being a part of the culture, and being understanding of it.

Great example of this was a friend from one of my groups that invited a bunch of us east coast peoples to his house for a long weekend gaming bonanza. About a dozen geeks (two of us were females) in a gorgeously furnished basement, with at any given time 4 consoles and at least one handheld all gaming at the same time. The host's wife introduced herself, packed up her things and spent the weekend over at her sister's place, because while she wasn't a gamer and didn't necessarily want to get knee-deep into our gamerthon...she was understanding that it was important to her husband that an event like that happen and cool with it all. (and since her house didn't get trashed, she's up for future events now!)

That's another side of the "gamer relationship" aspect: you don't have to really find a girl gamer who games with you and shares the gaming love, but find a girl who's open to the concept, understanding, and encouraging to your love of gaming. They do exist. Just have to find 'em.

Figured this was relevant to the discussion of having confidence and not running away to fantasyland (v-games, etc.):

My girlfriend is an occasional gamer. We'll co-op Borderlands, Castle Crashers, and a few other things, but she mostly just likes to watch me play stuff. It's weird, but kind of cool in a way (she also always guesses plot twists before I do, which is admittedly kind of annoying). It's even to the point where I'll suggest we get back into Dexter or watch a movie, but she'd much rather just watch me play a game and eventually doze off. She's also as excited as I am about the manchildcave dedicated to video games I have going on in the basement, so that's a plus!  :P

She doesn't really share my fanboyism for Castlevania, though. She thinks the premise is cool, and even shares my enthusiasm for collecting stuff (if only a little bit), but I don't think she has the desire to play any of the games.

I don't have a problem with people not understanding why I love videogames in general. I just hate when they say it's kiddy stuff or when they say for me to grow up, which obviously trigger a "fuck you" reply or something similar.

I had luck to found someone who, even though isn't really into videogames, accept my hobby, just like I accept her differences. :)

For Castlevania, in specific... I have 3 friends who loves Castlevania since SOTN. After playing it, they proceeded to know the series (through emulators or the actual hardware) and still love the series, specially the music. It's great to discuss with them, even though we have different preferences (we all were dissapointed by LoS though, specially on the music department).

This is something I would say and I respect that. To me your spouse or partner or whatever should be your very best friend.

For the original thing. My sister is a huge CV fan, my mother (while maybe not the women you were talking about) is enough of a CV fan that she can quote the opening of SotN and other CV quotes. In fact my sister posted about CV today on facebook and my mother posted a CV quote to it. (but probably because my sister and I quote CV), I have a very good lady friend who is a CV fan and comes to me for CV advice and finally I met a girl this year who has shown real interest in CV. My point is girls who like CV exist. I would say just keep looking.

Me: Castlevania is an awesome series about vampires!
She: Like... Twilight?
Me: Doh! ... More like Bram Stoker's Dracula.
She: Doh!... Never heard about it. That's it? ...
Me: Let's talk about cats from youtube...

It's always like that.. I understand your pain, jestercolony..,.

@sindra: Yeah, thats kind of what I meant there, but wasn't very clear. I want at least respect for the medium. She doesn't have to like it, or be a gamer persay. But if she looks down on it, or even worse tries to force/encourage me out of it, then we got problems.

Yeah that's one thing I've noticed some nerds doing and I don't really understand, wanting your partner to be a clone of yourself when it comes to interests, hobbies and worldviews. I guess it comes from a lack of social interaction because that would be really boring. Part of the joy of a relationship is the differences. You don't have to share or enjoy all of each others hobbies but you do need to respect them. And just like with other close friends with time you probably will get each other interested in new things, my girlfriend got me into gaming and I got her into riffing on terrible old movies ala MST3K, though the Cinema Snob really helped with that one XD.

PS-

Well I'd say that's the wrong attitude to start out with. Just talk to people, if you're not comfortable around women find women who are interested in the same things you are and that will make it easier. But love isn't always or even usually something that spontaneously happens, and you can't force it. Don't have the attitude of "I'm going to go and find the one, we'll date for x months and then have x number of babies in x years." just have the attitude of "I'm going to make some friends and have fun."

Clone of, no. Sharing some similar interests, yes. A certain level of similarity helps to draw people together. It's no use being with somebody if you can't both take joy in the same activities.

As fer da comic, it's just comedy.

That's how my sister-in-law was with my brother.
Also I dunno wtf downvoted you but I fixed that.
