I often wonder had this game been released, how it would've affected the direction of the series. All we have are few details & tidbits here & there, from staff that worked on the game. I'm sure Sonia's design would've had a MAJOR overhall, because she was straight-up fugly but that's subjective. The idea of time-travel sounded been intruiging but I fear it would've caused a lot of plot holes & would'nt have made that much sense in hindsight; surely we would've just brushed it off as "hey, Castlevania isn't big on story, so whatever." Still, I would've loved to see how it could've turned out, but it's just one of those "what-if" things that'll forever remain a mystery *coughAkumajoDraculaPS360cough*

The whole time travel thing with Sonia is probably not all that bad or plot-hole risky considering what IGA had introduced in CoD ie St. Germain, and CV: Judgment's Aion. CV Resurrection's time travel story is relatively tame when you take those two other games into account and a little more realistic for it's story; Victor Belmont throws away his destiny therefore fate needs to find another Belmont worthy of the fight and it summons Sonia from the past in order to aid the future. Rather simple really and nothing as needlessly complex as IGA has done. I personally think (now that enough time has gone by) that considering LoI and CoD and how they turned out, CV Resurrect would have been the better step forward. It is essentially like CV64 except with much better graphics, a higher polygon count, better camera and it was said that the game was to be more action-oriented and linear in style as opposed to CV64's exploration. I personally think this game should have been made, and it could have very-well been the best 3Dvania to date. But we'll never know now. If it were to be revisited and I wish it would, the game's graphics polygons, etc. would be pronominal. Heck, to me it would be more enjoyable then LoS. And I'll bet they could even make a much better-looking, none-anime Sonia this time 'round. This title could have also been Sonia's videogame redemption in the eyes of gamers since Legends itself was rather iffy when compare to it's two previous successful gameboy CV counterparts.

Considering I was going to get a Dreamcast for this game, I'm hoping it would've been excellent. ;D I thought all the screenshots looked awesome.
-
Decent. But not "like all the others", so I can't choose that option. So I guess I'm gonna go with Alucard Sword.
Time travel is a risky plot device in any fiction. Except Doctor Who.
Who was steering this project?
-
It obviously seems so much cooler now that it's a mysterious "what if".
Like Sonic Xtreme. Or the early 2D Rayman 2.
-
Well, if you're incapable of being objective anyway.
-
I wanted to vote, but no option matched what I believe.
I voted for excellent, anyway.
But the truth is I believe it would have been very good, but not excellent.
Excellent is my opinion of Legacy of Darkness.
3D Castlevania games were more than just decent in my opinion.
And I love Curse of Darkness, so it's not bad from my point of view.
Anyway, I'm not trying to argue.
Just to offer a general view on Castlevania 3D games from my perspective.
The thing is I'd love Resurrection to be finally completed and released some day, at least in a re-imagined way.
-
I honestly wouldn't put that much faith in Resurrection, I'm sorry to say. As Crisis noted, there was so little information released on it that it's hard to be enthusiastic about its possibilities. Even what little we saw didn't strike me as too impressive...
-
It doesn't look impressive now, yes. But there were some interesting details, like "the countess", Sonia's grave and Death as a horseman.
-
It basically looked to me like the N64 games with higher res and more hardware. That would've been A-OK with me; no hack'n'slash tendencies, no combos, just jumping and whipping fun.
I still think the graphics look rather pretty, but I've always preferred color and atmosphere over drab realism.

The music, on the other hand—based on the samples that were released—was really forgettable.
-
It's hard to say. Given how the other 3D games turned out before LoS, I'd have to say that it would have been equal or less then CoD. Keep in mind that I didn't like CV64/LoD that much (the camera angle and camera controls were bad). Let's also keep in mind that there was little released about the game and it was cancelled before we had enough to form an informed opinion.
Now then, if Konami attempts to resurrect the project, it could be good. Hell, with Legends not apart of the timeline anymore, the ideas of Victor Belmont and time travel can be thrown away and make this "Sonia's game". The first female Belmont as a hero. No love story with Alucard. Just a Belmont going after Dracula. Simple and straight forward. Just that the Belmont is a woman this time. I mean there could be some interaction with supporting characters like in CV64 and plot twists, but at the core it will be just like the classic nes games: Belmont vampire hunter going after Dracula.
All that being said, given how all the other 3D games turned out, I'll keep my expectations low so that I don't get disappointed.
-
Honestly I doubt it would have been good at all. You have to consider that it WAS cancelled first and foremost. I don't buy the claim that it was simply cancelled because the PS2 appeared. Konami has never been shy about alternating consoles with Castlevania, or giving many different types and visions of Castlevania in a short period of time.
I cannot imagine the quality would have been that great. Given the 'care' put into the story and art/character design direction, the coding likely fared no better. The interviews with the, I believe, producer or director were not flattering. Certainly a very arrogant and pompous individual with a giant chip on his shoulder. He even went as far as outright insulting other team's staff at Konami.
Bad attitude, lack of care for many aspects, and ultimately being cancelled: I don't believe this game would have been anything special at all.
-
I did really like the Countess. Something about her seemed very Hammer Horror-ish.
Sonia's design could have used a bit more tweaking though.

That. Exactly.
The game looked promising because it always looked like another Legacy of Darkness to me.

Agree with that too.

It sounds like Cox. I didn't know about this.

From what I've seen and what I've read, I never thought particularly highly of with the project. I'm actually surprised at how bad the art for it is. Even if they were just concept pieces, they didn't look professional at all. I didn't like the models, either.
-
I was looking through some magazine scans at the Dungeon, and I noticed one of the magazines mentions that somebody responsible for the game's art also worked on SCIV. I wonder if he is the guy who did the American cover?
-
It was the artist, Greg Orduyan, who seemed to be kind of full of himself. He uttered the memorable line in regards to Ayami Kojima:
Q. What do you think of series artist Ayami Kojima?
A. Nothing really. She's okay, she can draw.
But Kurt-sama did interview him not terribly long after the game was cancelled so it stands to reason he would still be a little sore at the time.
The music was actually done by Mark Lindsey. I uploaded the track Another Vampire Killer on Youtube, and he asked if I would properly credit him and I obliged. He actually was very surprised to find that the music was leaked on the internet.
-
Also, there was this bit:
A. Well, it affected the story, but as far as game design, I'd have to say no. It was scorned for life by those skeleton motorcycles. We looked at CV, we sort of debated ideas with the time travel. I like things to be different. We thought of a level where it's black and white, monochromatic, like the old Dracula 30s movie, with film grains and everything. We kind of left that behind. In game development, you create tons of ideas. But because of limitations in the time and budget, you fill it with the core ideas, and the stuff that cannot be shed.
A direct homage like that to the Hammer Horror Films would've been awesome.

Yeah, I'm inclined to give him a little slack here too. It seems dismissive, but after his game was canceled he would be in a pretty bad mood...I know I would be. It would have been nice of him to say something nicer about Kojima-hime, but in a very depressed and disappointed state of mind, some folks would be hard pressed to say something nice about *anybody.* ;-;

What about the cancelled 32x version?
-

That's something I STILL would love to see in a future CV game, but doubt it given the gaming trend.
-

It's resources were re-used to make SotN.

I would be too If I were in his shoes, but not in a negative way. Since it's on the internet it is in-essence immortalized by the digital world. As are the images of Resurrection. The game may not exist anymore but that which we do have access to, is still here. I won't forget it. I can't. Maybe someday, someone will come along and try to recreate Resurrection as a fan project. It would definitely be a lot of work just to try and recreate an entire game from so few screen shots. But I think it can be done. Or if we're lucky enough somebody on Konami's inside would steal the game data and release it onto the internet. One can only dream.
-

My bad I should have clarified. I was bringing up the cancelled 32x version in regards to Uzo's comment that Konami wouldn't just cancel a game due to a certain system's dominance (or lack thereof).
I'm just saying the 32x version was scrapped due likely to the near-total failure of the 32x, similar to how the Dreamcast was not performing as highly as Sega had hoped, although I wouldn't call the Dreamcast a total failure.

I still have some of the tracks on my computer.
Some are pretty cool.

This is EXACTLY how I imagine Castlevania in 3D. Real action platforming. Add a bit or "verticality" there and bang, we have a winner.

I have all of the tracks that were ever uploaded to the dungeon back in the day. I doubt it's all of the tracks that were made, but...
-
I have 17 tracks.
-
I only have 12 tracks, where'd you get the other five??! Share please! I wanna hear them... :'(
-
Yeah I'm [Alucard] interested in this [/Alucard].

While I don't like the character designs, I agree. It's close to my envision of what a perfect 3D CV would look like. Imagine if it was given the budget and gloss as LoS? Instead of focusing on a heavy combat system, focus on adventure platforming. Keep the classic old school horror movie references to Hammer and the Universal monsters. Awesome! I STILL want THAT game!
-
I was going to be a snarky bastard and say, "Y'know, guys, there's a website attached to this board ;D", but it appears the Resurrection tunes are no longer available from here. I doubt I have 'em anywhere anymore, but I could look. Probably on some old wiped-out hard drive, sadly.

Exactly. That's why I love the N64 games.

Here's one:
Castlevania Resurrection OST: " Cartoon Jazz " (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfgAmt3Z8lA#ws)
Sounds something a Disney movie would have when one of the characters bursts into a song. I can imagine it. Sonia sternly sings about the Belmont legacy while Victor listens with his arms crossed, pouting. Would include dancing skeletons and zombies playing the drums.
