Title: Is Order of Shadows canon?
Post by: Tuxedo Mark on July 12, 2013, 08:27:26 AM
I haven't been able to find any info one way or the other.

No, it's a reboot in an alternate universe with some similarities, music not being one of them  :P
Its story would contradict with almost all games in the franchise, because characters have been relocated to MS wishes to fulfill certain roles when in the original canon some of them were centuries apart. For example, the central part of the plot that links both main games (LoS 1 and 2), which is Mirror of Fate, would be in total contradiction with Castlevania 3.
Not to mention that even Dracula himself is a completely different character.

Quote from: IGA
Translation: Regarding Castlevania 64, Legacy of Darkness, Circle of the Moon, Order of Shadows and the Arcade, they are stories from a separate world with the same world view. Castlevania 64, Legacy of Darkness and Circle of the Moon are treated in the same way as the makers intended.

This is in response to a question I asked him.

It should be noted that the game has some obvious shout outs to the main continuity. It was supposedly intented to be an alternate continuity from the very start. I'm guessing the story writer wasn't aware of this fact.

i think he was referring to Order of Shadows, the cellphone game, not Lords of Shadow *giggles*

either way, both games are not canon, as admitted by the developers themselves. OoS can be viewed as a "side story" or "gaiden" game, but it has no place in the main timeline.

Oh, silly me!  :P
Well, the answer is the same for OoS, though the part explaining Mirror of Fate wouldn't fit there, I guess  :P

Yeah, everything said so far. But I seem to recall IGA having some very minor input, if only for gameplay stuff and not story. Would've been interesting to have had Desmond as Simon's father though.

I think IGA just offered moral support to the team, kinda like how they sometimes put a "Special Thanks" in the credits of some games. He might have popped in the offices a couple times to give his blessing, and left it at that.

Here's some bits from an IGN interview.

IGN Wireless: How is it tied to other Castlevania storylines?

TR (Tyrone Rodriguez the game's lead designer): Castlevania: Order of Shadows' main protagonist is a Belmont. He's doing what Beltmonts do best.

IGN Wireless: How closely are you working with Koji Igarashi for this new title? Was he pretty hands on during the development, or did he just offer some guidance? Did he enjoy the challenge of working on a new platform, or was it outside his expertise?

TR: We met with IGA pretty early on in the development process, he gave his blessing, but also reminded us that the game had to be fun and keep with the spirit of the Castlevania series. This needs no interpretation and reaffirmed our believe that the game had to be designed to embrace the mobile platform. IGA took a look at the design, story and script, giving his input and comments as necessary. He was actively involved with ensuring the game was consistent with the current canon. His attention to detail and knowledge of the series is obviously unrivaled. It's really great to have a living, breathing encyclopedia, even if he's in Roppongi Hills most of the time.

IGA knows games, there's probably nothing related or unrelated to Castlevania he can't handle. His background is in programming so he understands the challenges of mobile. That's been a huge help—he even came up with a few solutions on how to improve hit detection and the whip mechanics.

IGN Wireless: What sort of timeframe in relation to other Castlevania titles?

TR: Officially, Order of Chaos is considered a "gaiden" or side story to the Castlevania canon. However, it takes place roughly in the late 1600s.

I have to disagree with these two comments from Tyrone Rodriguez. If both these sentences are true then IGA wouldn't have made the mistakes that he had. And the continuity of the series would be largely intact, with no plot-holes or contradictions. There are people on this forum who are far more intimate with the CV series then IGA has ever been.

Does intimacy refers to looking at fanarts in bed?  :P

I was tempted to say, "That depends.  Are they wearing pants in the fanarts?"  Then I realized half the characters in Castlevania don't wear pants anyway.  They wear leather.  And use whips.

At first look at the text I believed you were going to ask me what I was wearing in bed, haha!
Then I read the text  :P
So, to answer your question, most of the times they are, yes.
Not me, because I am already in bed  :P

When I was a kid I used to go to bed with shorts t-shirt & socks on my feet. As I got older less & less articles of clothing were getting worn to bed. Socks became too uncomfortable, so I went to bed with just shirt & boxers. Towards Senior year of high school I was just wearing boxers & left out shirts altogether. One particular night during college, without going into too much graphic details, I ditched wearing boxers to bed, but only sometimes. Then summer came, and I couldn't bear wearing any clothing to bed at all. From that day on I've been sleeping nude with only my bedsheets covering my physique #dontjudgeme #noregrets

Haha! That Twitter tags are funny!
I went progressively losing some items during the passage of time, too. I used to wear pajamas and socks, night robes, and a variety of stuff my mom bought for me. It all came to just underwear in the end. I could lose once piece, sometimes. But at least panties were always present, even in the hottest summer nights. I can do OK with an old t-shirt without bra, though. Or even nothing. But I wouldn't be comfortable wearing nothing, I guess.

Some talk this thread has become!  :P

Oh, you should try it! It's very liberating! Especially after a long day of playing Castlevania, particularly Belmont's Revenge. Granted, sometimes my dog (a rottweiler/pitbull halfbreed) would jump in the bed with me, but he always prefers to sleep at the edge of my bed. He never tries to crall up my butt or anything, and I'm thankful for that. Most of us prolly mess around with our phones right before we go to sleep, and sometimes I might even play some CV on it (my iPhone is jailbroken, so I have access to all the classics via emulator). I even have Encore of the Night, but playing that game, while naked, can be frustrating. However most other games I don't have that much of a problem, despite the poor controls. Sometimes I imagine if everyone walked around naked, and clothes never existed. It would be a very honest society we would be living in. How did Alucard manage to find comfort when he was asleep for all those centuries? Was he fully clothed? It's hard to imagine, however the SotN prologue shows him awakening already in his outfit, or so it seems. The smell of 200+ years in the same clothing and position must've been something fierce. But I digress. Sleeping naked is fun. At least for me. I'm willing to bet other Dungeonites sleep naked and are afraid to admit it, or maybe just wearing socks & nothing else. Or maybe just a t-shirt with no underwear? Strange customs, you guys have  :-X

Well, this must be the strangest conversation I've been into in the Dungeon so far, even more than the thread about Castlevania confessions, and that Succubus between my awards doesn't help my image when I find myself talking about sleeping naked, haha! That's what happens when you talk so much about doujinshis and fantasies.
New members by now must be thinking weird stuff about me  :P
Let's hope they don't read too much of my older posts.
In real life I'm not this open, to be honest. It's nice to free your thoughts in an online community.
I'm very open minded in some things, but they are things I just can't talk with my mom, for instance.

And while we wait for the inevitable return of the train crushing into the walls of this topic, let's continue this because it's so fun  :)
I don't know if I would be happy with a naked society.
I'm not even comfortable when I'm wearing a swimsuit in a swimming pool, especially when it's a two piece swimsuit.
And about Alucard, I like to think that every character from every game and anime (I mean, beautiful characters, like Alucard) smell all the time like roses and fine perfume.
