You know they are bad, or at least mediocre...
You know the music is bad, or the story doesn't make sense, or the gameplay is a complete mess, or they are terribly full of bugs and errors...
Yet you liked them back in the day, and today you have so much love for them that you still like them.
It's the bad games you like :)
For myself, I can think of a few...
Knights of the Temple II (PC)
Medievil 1 and 2 (Playstation)
Miracle Ropis: Adventure in 2.100 (Famicom)
Frankenstein: The Monster Returns (NES)
So, what bad or mediocre games do you like?
Post some answers during the weekend, let's make this a fun thread! :)
And with this, I say goodbye to the forum for a few days, because I am traveling again to the mountains to meet with a friend, so nice weekend to everyone, and see you all when I return!
Kisses! ♥ :-* ♥

MediEvil bad? D: It's got some odd controls, but I always thought it had a really cool design, graphically and otherwise.
I don't know that I consider any of the games I like to be "bad." People tell me about how awful the controls and presentation of Deadly Premonition are, but it's just not something that I recognize as being a detriment or anything. My tastes in gameplay and graphics tend to differ from the norm.
Last night I did beat Dynowarz, though. It's not a bad game per se, but there's nothing especially interesting about it.
EXCEPT THAT COVER ART HOLY HELL AWESOME

Bionic Commando (the 3D one) is pretty middling outside of some bomb ass swing mechanics. I'm incredibly sad we'll never see a sequel. Not because I cared about the plot but I wanted to see the swinging at work in much better level design.
Silent Hill 4 is another one. Definitely the weakest of the original four, but it was still disturbing to the point where it's the only one of the games that's given me nightmares.
-
I like the two Evil Dead games on the PS2 (Fistful of Boomstick and Regeneration) even though they're just budget hack'n slashers. Especially the first one (FoB) because it doesn't have the needless sidekick, and it was the first PS2 game I owned. Resident Evil: Director's Cut on the PS1 might be even more fun today than it was when it first came out, all the goofy thrills of a cheap zombie/haunted house movie. Overall though there are a lot more bad/mediocre movies I like than games. I suppose because no matter how bad a movie is it always progresses, while bad games usually have frustrating controls that stop you in your tracks. Speaking of which...
Medievil 1 and 2 (Playstation)
I remember wanting Medievil so bad as a kid, one of the few video games I really really wanted to play. When I finally got around to going through it a few months ago though I was less than impressed with the loose controls and bad camera angles. Bet it was a lot of fun back in the day though.
Frankenstein: The Monster Returns (NES)
What did you think of the AVGN's thrashing of it? (http://youtu.be/cOfHlihgOn0?t=4m47s) I hate to say (because I love the CV-like premise and graphics) but it seems pretty accurate from what I've played of the game.

They did make a sequel. It's also on PSN, Although it's not as fun as the first I find.
My guilty pleasure is the game series Brandish. Many reviewers say that its control scheme along with the stiff, disorientating room turn brings the game down. But I was attracted to its story and music. That and the maze puzzles were enough to challenge my brain at the time.
-
Top Gun: Combat Zones
It's one of the most cheaply-made PS2 titles out there, has ugly PS1-ish graphics, bland music, and is utterly inferior to the PS2 Ace Combat games in every way. But dammit, I still love it to death and have great memories of it.
It was also made by the same people behind Superman 64. Yeah.

I believe he meant the non-sidescrolling game, not Rearmed. o .o

Strip Poker..... You know, the ones with the 8 bit pictures!

I enjoyed this game wayyy more than I should have, considering how I hated Bulletproof.

Monkey Magic!
+1 for this, I know this game and if they did a better way to show the story it would make more sucess.
A lot of games, I play games even if they are mediocre. I cant think any name right now and that makes me really sad (my memory seems to be worsening each day, for real), I'll try to post something after sleeping, maybe I need a rest :S

They've got a bionic commando game that's not side-scrolling? I've never seen nor heard of this title before.

You bet they do! (Bionic Commando - Official Trailer [HD] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C9_we55J_4#ws))
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bionic_Commando_%282009_video_game%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bionic_Commando_%282009_video_game%29)). Too bad it'll never get a sequel. Controls take a little bit to get used to, but then they are absolutely amazing, and you swing with freedom of control I haven't seen in a video game before. Read below:

YES! Someone agrees! That Full 3D Bionic Commando game, despite flaws, was amazing. The swinging mechanic was the best thing I've seen this generation of games. If they had one more game to refine the level design and interactive elements, it would just dominate. It's an example of why you don't need to totally reinvent the wheel when making a 2D game 3D. They tried to translate it pretty straight up, and it was amazing. The visuals were impressive, too--swinging through that cave level felt like what I hoped a 3D Super Castlevania IV-like game would be like. Another thing I liked was the click-stick zoom in for precision shooting, and the voice acting. Story was sort of weird, but it was intriguing up to the end. And they KEPT THE CLASSIC THEME SONG! Can't recommend this game enough. Its sad when a company gets so much right in reviving a franchise, and then it gets thrown under the bus. I'll be surprised if the new rumored Contra comes anywhere close to being this faithful.
Some others I like a lot that don't get a lot of credit...
Spy Fiction (PS2), Mischief Makers (N64), Bomberman 64 (N64), Bomberman Hero (N64), Winback 1 (PS2/N64)...you know, I find I usually like the games that don't get a lot of credit. I think it's fair to say Castlevania 64 and its Legacy of Darkness follow-up fit on this list in terms of public opinion, too, which is a shame.

I've remembered some:
Blasto (PSX, this game deserved and still deserves a sequel)
Tomba! (PSX, crazy story, very cool game)
Pax Corpus (PSX)
Pink Panther (SNES)
Superman (Atari 2600)
Micro Machines (PSX)
Akuji: The Heartless (PSX)
Dragon's Lair (SNES, the original one is awesome)
Rugrats 1 and 2 (PSX)
I really doesnt know how to rate a game and know if its mediocre.
-
Micro Machines (PSX)
Oh wow, I totally forgot that existed

Akuji: the Heartless is a pretty good definition of a mediocre game. Doesn't do a lot wrong or a lot really spectacularly. Nice to have Richard "Shaft" Roundtree playing a badass undead Voodoo brotha though.
Also I've heard mixed things about Blasto! But they couldn't do a sequel because unfortunately the actor Phil Hartman who was the voice and main selling point of the game (at least in the US) is no longer with us.
-
Yeah, I knew that because of Wikipedia, so sad :(
But they could try to find someone with a similiar voice right? This game rocks and is very hard too.
-
Lords of Shadow. :-X
Also, any of the Dragon's Lair games. Any port. I love the fuck out of that game.
-

I'd say you're more likely to get a "spiritual sequel" than a real one. Which is to say a game with similar humor and gameplay but not actually attached to the same character or universe. Because no one would want to look like they were trying to dishonor the memory of Phil Hartman. In the US he was well loved and is fondly remembered for his roles on Saturday Night Live and especially the Simpsons.

*Gasp* Even the NES one?

Especially the NES one.

So bealtiful. ;_;

I've got to add Glover (N64) to that list of mine earlier. It's not celebrated, but it was really unique and fun, even if rough around the edges.
-
Oh my God, Glover was awesome. I had completely forgotten about it until you mentioned it. I wish I still had my disc. :(

M.C Kids, dammitall! :D
This game was surprisingly well-designed (despite what the Angry Videogame Nerd says about it).
Many years ago I actually beat this game. Now? I suuuuuck at it. xD
M.C. Kids - NES Gameplay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7j3XM2Xcvw#)
-
You actually beat MC Kids? You're a better gamer than I am.
I have the PS2 port of the original arcade versions of the Dragon's Lair games, though those are actually good.
Another thing i like isn't a bad game but a bad console (add-on, really) - the Sega 32x. I first got it in a bargain bin at Toys R Us for $15, and it came with Star Wars Arcade. The game was bland, but the 3D graphics wowed me for a day or two. For some reason, I am continually fascinated that the Genesis was given the potential to have 32-bit graphics.
Sega 32X Tech Demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOWZbydnlZE#)
I also played the shit out of the 32X port of DOOM back in the day. I honestly had no idea it was terrible until years later.

To be fair, compared to modern PC sourceports every other way of playing DOOM is terrible.

The original PlayStation versions hold up because of the dark ambient music. I much prefer to play DOOM that way because it makes it really unsettling.
And then there's DOOM 64 which is my favorite in the series, but that's an original title so eh.
Also, any of the Dragon's Lair games. Any port. I love the fuck out of that game.
You consider Dragon's Lair a bad or mediocre game? I think it's pretty badass. I have the Wii Dragon's Lair Trilogy which far as I can tell runs the games really smoothly. The only thing I dislike about the game is that when playing on a widescreen TV, it crops the top and bottom of the image. This can be avoided, but you have to go to the Wii settings and set it to 4:3, and then use your TV's view option to squish the wide image to its proper 4:3 frame. It's a bit of a hassle, but since it allows me to play the games in their original aspect ratio, I'll do it—but the game really should have allowed you to choose 16:9 or 4:3 in the options menu.
-
I've the Wii version too and I dont think its mediocre, only these sidescroller ports are mediocre to me.

Both of those have been ported/recreated for modern PC source ports, multiple times with increasing degrees of faithfulness iirc. Also I seem to recall the original composer for the PSX version released higher quality and extended versions of his tracks/new tracks for the game which I'm sure someone has figured out how to play with the PC version.
EDIT: Yep.

Yep, he's been releasing a lot of stuff on Bandcamp, including original material. It would be cool to play updated PC versions with the PSX music.
Something like ten years ago there was the DOOM 64: Absolution TC, wonder if there's been a better PC version of the game since, especially now that lossless, complete versions of the music has been released.
I'd love to play PC Quake with Aubrey Hodges' score. Wish I knew how to do that kind of editing.

You did not disappoint, CV Dungeon. You did not disappoint.
Does Mega Man X6 count? I don't consider it a "bad" or "mediocre" game by any means. a rushed, half baked product maybe, but not bad.

No, that isn't what I meant at all. i love the shit out of it, but it gets a reputation for being bad/mediocre for its outrageous difficulty. I was thinking more along the lines of "games OTHER PEOPLE generally consider bad/mediocre that YOU like." Which is why I initially said Lords of Shadow.
-
Ohohoho, I see.
OP asked for games we thought were bad or mediocre but liked anyway, hence the confusion. :)
-
Welp. Don't I just feel silly now. :-X

Actually, I found the episode to be really funny. One of my favourites. And I was surprised the Nerd mentioned every mistake I used to laugh at when playing the game.
Still, I love that game! :)
-
Deadly Towers. With the aid of a walkthrough, I can have fun with it. I can see how most would hate it, though. Being seriously underpowered at the beginning may have a lot to do with it (and so do the cheap pit deaths, the confusing dungeon, the general sense of not knowing what to do, but I digress).
I like Karate Kid for the NES, too. It's a nice little distraction to play for a half hour or so. And there are so many ways to earn extra lives that it kind of cancels out the frustration of getting juggled to death by enemies and sticks and whatnot.
I also like Rival Turf. Not the best beat-em-up out there, but still more interesting than the Final Fight sequels. Somehow. Brawl Brothers was okay, too. Peace Keepers kinda sucked, though.
T&C Surf Design. Man...that game was shit. But it was fun. Even trying to pretend that you knew how the surfing part worked could be fun sometimes. And the cat in the tuxedo is a stone cold pimp. Tied with Karate Kid for best LJN game. ;)
I could go on forever about crap games I like, so I'll stop here.
-
T&C Surf Design.
Another good game, though I can see why a lot of people would say otherwise. This is one of the first games that i had when we got our NES for the first time. That and CV 2. I also find it amusing and interesting that the surfing gorilla ends up becoming the gadgeteering mechanic Funky Kong in the Donky Kong Country series.
-
I never knew about this, good one.
-
the new Devil May Cry:DmC game. I don't know if this counts because I think it's a really fun great game, but I get shit for that opinion.
I like the new art direction, I think the combat, while not as hardcore as DMC4 Dante's, is really fun, fast, and interesting, and I really love the use of the Unreal 3 Engine. Being able to see the terrain change in front of your very eyes is pretty cool. I even like the rebooted characters. *shots fired*
Don't let Rugal see this post. :-X
-
I stand with you, Docta-San!
I love the new DmC and I consider it is the best (by far) of the DMC franchise, with the only exception perhaps of DMC3 story. But nothing else. As a game, it is the best and more complete and fun to play, and the most engaging one, not to mention the graphics are the best and the fact that it actually includes characters with personalities and a deep, mature story.
I wish they'd made another one, but seeing how everyone disliked it, I doubt it.

No, I completely agree. See, I have this real stupid thing I do called detaching myself from my fandom in the case of a revamp or retold canon. I happen to love the shit out of DmC, and eagerly hope they continue the story, despite its various flaws. It plays very smoothly, for being so dissimilar (yet so similar at the same time) to the original gameplay style. I very much love the grappling elements and the deviations the game takes from the now-typical GoW-esque chain grappling.
And Kat's a better damn character than Trish or Lucia ever were(though they do have their merits), as far as I'm concerned.
I wish they'd made another one, but seeing how everyone disliked it, I doubt it.
People lost their minds over Lords of Shadow, and two sequels still came of it. Negative reactions don't always dictate the fate of sequels, so long as they aren't like the fuckwads now who send death threats to developers (seriously, can we just round these douchebags up and shoot them or something?).

DmC selled well?
-

Yeah after playing it some more the game definitely has it's own charm. If the hit and jump detection were a little more tight it might be a hidden classic on the level of Astyanax, unfortunately as it is it's not a very good game for control reasons. The password+non-infinite continues thing is really annoying but even Castlevania is guilty of this with Bloodlines.
-
DmC selled well?
It went Platinum with approximately 1,100,000 units sold. It might not be that big by comparison, but it isn't as much of a flop as people might think it was. Devil May Cry 3, which is very highly valued, is only a slight bit above it on the sales tier(I've never understood why DMC2 did better than 3 did, but whatevs), and just for comparison Megaman X is barely above it. So it goes to show that sales figures and fan reactions don't always dominate, exclusively or not.
-
So we might have another DmC game? :)
-
Remembered another one. A lot of people give it poor ratings. Konami's very own HYBRID HEAVEN (N64). For its time, it was a really intriguing video game story with its twists, and the art direction and unique combat system really stood out for me, despite the N64's limitations. I haven't seen a combat system quite like that since, and I'm a person who tends to like real-time over menu-based systems, so that's saying something. They mixed the two so well, though, giving a lot of control and variety to the player, and the physics of the actions felt real. I would love to see a sequel with some of the more MGS gameplay elements from the Beta demo video mixed in.
-
Pfil and Dracula9 I want to give you guys like +10,000 each haha! :D I heard DmC didn't even sell 1,000,000 across all platforms but the guys throwing those figures out were haters. They said like 600k or something. Honestly DMC3 is the masterpiece of thr series and it sold less than nearly any of the others. 4 has sold the most and I think its thr worst in the serious other than 2. Sales is a really shtty way to measure worth.
By I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the game!

Thanks for the support.
I think DmC is a very compelling game in every possible aspect.
I didn't like DMC 1 and 2, and I think the 4th game just had beautiful scenery and some nice music, but as a game I found it to be mediocre.
-
On that note, DMC1 is actually my favorite of the series, despite its goofiness at times (dat grammar). It used to be 3 at the top, but the more I play 1, the higher it climbs. I dunno, I just feel like it's got some of the absolute best atmosphere of the series and that gets overlooked by first-game-of-the-series clunkiness and awkward sections (much as I feel about Silent Hill 1 and it being waaaay overshadowed by Silent Hill 2 and the more "fan favorited" titles). And also because that first fight against Mundus, regardless of the sudden shift to rail-shooter, is fucking amazing.
-
Love DMC1 to bits as well as DMC3. They're both completely different games though.
DMC2 we really don't need to discuss (it's horse shit) and DMC4 was okayish; I'm impressed and absolutely terrified by the depth of the fighting mechanics, which, doubled with the god-awful level layout makes me put it down the second I try to pick it up again. Also Nero being Dante-MkII was exceedingly lazy of them.
DmC... I dunno. The demo did nothing for me. I can see why people would like it, but to me it's devoid of any charm outside of maybe the bright colors they use in some stages. I guess the aerial stuff looks kind of cool, but it doesn't look like the combat does anything the other games do better. I was hoping the plot would go "so bad it's good" like in Bionic Commando, but instead it's just kind of boring. Which bothers me way more than a game being hilariously bad.
-
I've only ever played DMC1 (which I loved). What was the issue with DMC2, though?
-
A lot, IMO. For one, it just...doesn't quite have the same level and feel of action the rest of the games tend to have. Its plot is rather silly in execution (a billionaire corporate guy with a really annoying voice trying to open the Demon World and gain the power of another one of the super-demons Sparda sealed), and the female lead is really similar to Trish plot-wise(artificial demon, only she wants to stop the corporate guy because he's her maker). It plays a little awkwardly, I think, and its weapon systems on Dante's part is badly done (all swords, that vary in range and dealt damage, rather than the rest of the games which feature a balanced variety of weapon styles).
I mean, it really isn't unplayable. I don't wish I had never played it or anything, but it's not really a game I play very often. I think I've only ever beaten it three times between Dante and Lucia (the female lead who has her own shorter story on a second disc), and I generally don't ever have much desire to pick it up. It's meh, I guess.
-

Super short, super easy, lack of story, risible voice acting, random characters, cheesy one liners, bad music, out of context enemies, one of the worst ending I can remember...
At least from my personal point of view.

I don't care what people say I love this game.
-
Then let's list ShtH's redeeming qualities, shall we?
The soundtrack was quite good. I Am... All of Me was nothing short of awesome, for example.
The writing can be delightfully cheesy at times ("Where's that damn fourth Chaos Emerald?"), and at least it gave Shadow character development (though the point of the whole game is Shadow's character development).
Gameplay-wise it was still playable, unlike that rushed-out-of-the-door piece of shit that is Sonic '06.

It wasn't THAT short. It was pretty easy though because the guns are way overpowered. Once you get the submachine guns, you don't really need anything else, especially in boss fights. There that one boss fight where you're standing on a platform in space and the boss is floaating and all you do it shoot it. I played it a lot back in the day because I paid full price for it when it came out :-X THAT'S how big a DMC fan I am (if only I'd known it was wack when I bought it xD)
And I don't think the story was any worse than any of the other DMC games really. I'll give you the voice acting though. Man, Lucia's accent was so spotty lol! Dante didn't really say anything and the bad guy was just ridiculous.
DMC1 was amazing though and DMC3SE was even better, but they're very different games. 4 was definitely disappointing. If the series started to slide, it was there for sure.

Nero played more basic than DMC1 Dante. I have no idea what Capcom was thinking there. Whereas Dante in 4 was amazing and basically broke the game. But yeah the levels were terrible in that game. Easily my least favorite other than 2.
I was glad they didn't go the "so bad it's good" route in DmC. If anything, it was sort of a "don't be sso quick to trust the media" kind of theme in the story. I liked that the characters weren't so jokey about everything. Dante being ridiculous got old real quick in DMC3 and I think that game has the best story in the series (which isn't really saying much.)
-
I'll give you the voice acting though. Man, Lucia's accent was so spotty lol!
"He tricked me!... that macho!".
My God, that was SO, SO FUNNY!
She was adorable as a caricature :P
Dante didn't really say anything and the bad guy was just ridiculous.
Indeed. Dante didn't talk. Except the cheesy "Devils never cry", which is just as ridiculous as the "Jackpot!" from DMC3, but what can I do, I really don't like Dante. I generally like Vergil, though.
I guess he can as well say "Devils never speak" :P
And the bad guy from DMC was a funny imitation of Dracula. He was nice, though, as a horror parody.
DMC1 was amazing though and DMC3SE was even better, but they're very different games. 4 was definitely disappointing. If the series started to slide, it was there for sure.
DMC3 has a great and emotional story and very nice music, some nice stages and a general good gameplay.
Still, DmC (the 5th game) is my favourite). DMC3 is my close 2nd.
I believe the 4th game only have nice (I mean, BEAUTIFUL) scenarios, and nothing more.

But that game's good. D: Super awesome music, visuals, and that fun Prince of Persia style gameplay.
Only trouble is I've yet to beat it 'cos it can get kind of tough.

Nosferatu on SNES!
Played that one too and thought it was interesting. The graphics really grabbed me like SCV4's did.
-
It's aesthetically nice, but I wouldn't compare it to SCV4, since one is an excellent game and the other one is a game that it's now almost forgotten (though I like it, because I'm into that somber look and that kind of gameplay).

Nosferatu on SNES!
THIS! SO MUCH THIS!
It's really not even bad, honestly. It's just boring by comparison, but it gets a TON of points for atmosphere and being rather realistic as far as character abilities are concerned.
-
Let's not forget the super awesome animation, particularly in those cutscenes. Really impressive stuff.
-
I actually like playing Bram Stoker's Dracula on the NES, including the trippy ambient music. Jonathan Harker's sprite always seemed well animated to me.
-
I played it on Sega Genesis as a little girl, I don't remember much about the game, but I was already fan of gothic, vampires and all that horror stuff.
-
Oh there are so many bad/mediocre games I enjoy :D
Krusty's Super Fun House (SNES)
Clever puzzle platformer that nobody likes. I can totally see that it's really annoying, but I have very fond memories of it.
Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance (PS2)
Capcom brawler with light RPG elements. Is often mentioned together with Final Fight Streetwise and was universally panned. I like it :D It's a bit like Yakuza, almost.
Suikoden Tierkreis (DS)
I am pretty surprised that this game is so hated but I understand that people were disappointed when it wasn't a proper Suikoden. Also, the voice acting is ATROCIOUS, especially the main character. But it's still one of my favourite JRPGs on the DS.
I'll think of more.

The NES/Master System version of the many many tie-ins for that movie is the one to play if you're going to. But yeah it's still not very good. You're better off with Nosferatu if you want a non-CV Vampire themed retrogame.
-
I remember the SNES version of Bram Stoker's Dracula to be especially awful. Depressing to look at, boring level design, weird hit detection, hilarious walking animation (feet does not move at the same speed as the actual floor, if you know what I mean. It almost looks a bit like the main character is ice skating, but in a strange way). To think I actually bought a copy back in the day...

Nosferatu have a really nice look and atmosphere, but it's SO HARD! Pun Pun! >:(

tales of the tempest and megaman x7
-
It wasn't THAT short.
Uh... Yeah, about Nero being less complex then DMC1 Dante... Uh, I'll just leave this here:
DMC4 NERO COMBO MAD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOcVbMig64E#ws)
Sure, Nero's just got the one sword and gun, but the number of options you have to style on fools is ridiculous. I admire the game for that but it's really difficult to get into for the same reason.
And as shitbad as DMC2 is, I love the game just a little bit for bringing Arius into this world. His voice is hilarious especially with his ululations of anger when Dante tricks him, and as a bonus he reminds me greatly of this guy:

tales of the tempest
Is it really that bad?
I'm quite fond of Abyss, Graces and Symphonia, and I'm waiting to play Xillia.

Much more of mediocre than bad. I have fond memories of playing this at my best friend's house. It's also pretty much the only decent stand-alone Superman game out there.

Or as realistic as an average Joe taking on the creatures of the night with his bare hands can get, at least. ;D
But yes, seconding! I wouldn't mind a Nosferatu reboot if they can do it right.

I much prefer the SNES version. I just watched a video of this one and while it's in every way identical to it's super Nintendo counterpart, the SNES version has better music that seems to compliment the atmosphere of the game very well.
-
Superman for SNES was on my list too, thanks for reminding me :P

With out a doubt a lackluster experience especially compared to Abyss, graces, symphonia, xillia, and vesperia oh god I love vesperia. It's battle is odd you can fight on three planes it's not like phantasia or symphonia where it's on one plane or 2d/3d like Abyss or Vesperia, it's just an odd ball not to mention it just does not have that feeling of polish. Hits feel very light and cheap. exploration feels light and even with all of that I still dig it. But this is not your go to tales game you really have to be a fan to even consider this.

It should be really strange to fight in three planes...

it does not jive well with me why three different planes why a top, middle, and bottom? it's a weak system imo.
