Title: On the other hand...
Post by: Pfil on August 21, 2013, 03:32:33 PM
What if, instead of what I said in the previous thread, the next Castlevania team decides to go full anime and the game ends up resembling more current anime designs than traditional Castlevania?

How would biggest Iga fans react? Would they like it or would they believe it is also too much?

Please don't fight, I'm just making new fun threads  :)

Like anime anime? I'd feel bummed !

It would be much better than LoS IMO if they dont try to cross the line. Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin are okay for me, but if they go far from that I really dont know what could happen (maybe it could be good, but its a risk).

So SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

It only depends of what type of anime they would be emulating. If it's something dark, not goofy, then I would be okay with it. I prefer if they don't go this way, though. Western market is the one who buys CV in the first place, so anime won't bring any benefit to the series.

Full anime? Oh no, I don't think I'd like that at all. Of course, if they were to nail the rest, I wouldn't complain as much; but I already have trouble with DoS and PoR's art design, and anime is the reason why RoB isn't as high on my list as it should be. I love anime, but not for Castlevania.
No, I don't think I could stand a full anime Castlevania. Whatever was wrong with Kojima's art?

Depends on what 'full anime' style they go with. If ever, it'll need to retain CV's Gothic trappings and atmosphere, with none to very light humor. And none of what they tried with DOS and POR.

Especially POR. Charlotte's Angry Face haunts me still.

Kid Dracula says hello :D

And Otomedius by way of Kokoro.

Whatever was wrong with Kojima's art?

It is a "What if" scenario, so disregard the "why's" in it, its not made to make sense if I understood it right. Its only for see what type of reception it would receive, Ayame Kojima art is awesome. xD

Especially POR. Charlotte's Angry Face haunts me still.

Yes, the main problem are these emoticon faces. But its okay for me if the game is good.

Too many androgynous men with rather deformed body forms. Everything else seems good.

I wouldn't mind an anime style CV once more. But I think the main thing is that 1# if it takes on a more serious stylization, say something like Vampire hunter D: Bloodlust? And 2# if the story was done really well in order to overlook the faults of the art style in case it's more along the lines of PoR or DoS.

Bring Yoshitaka Amano on board, then we'll talk. Like, just looking through the Front Mission World Historica, it's like clear as day when he stopped working on Front Mission and I just didn't like the character designs after he left. They're still good, but his art has a certain melancholic touch to it that fit so well with his works like early Final Fantasy, Front Mission, Vampire Hunter D, and Angel Egg.

I didn't like Bloodlust's style. I liked Madhouse when they worked with Satoshi Kon. But I didn't like their style in Bloodlust.

PoR is my favourite CV, but yes, it is a "what if" scenario.

I'll grant you that. But it's the best we have.
Even so, take Kojima's Aria cast, and place it next to what was done in Dawn. It isn't even comparable.

The point is, we haven't exactly seen anime Castlevania truly "done right". Think what you will about RoB, but DoS and PoR weren't exactly artistically stellar. Fundamentally, I wouldn't mind the transition, if it were done tastefully. But I can't quite picture it being done that way.

Berserk has design roots in the 80s, and kept the general art direction even well into the 90s. That being said, of course it looks good. My personal favorite styles of anime originate from the 80s and 90s. I mean, even the anime-esque designs of Richter in RoB or the designs in Bloodlines(which are pretty anime/manga-esque) are pretty badass. Hell, I'd take that and chibi, cutesy Maria over the style see in DoS and PoR(which seems more "safe" and lacking soul). Hell, even more than that dude that does Death Note. I mean, hell, if not Berserk, maybe something City Hunter, M.D Geist, Ghost in the Shell(movie) and the VHD movies.

IMO, that style is more fitting of a CV anime(or anime style fitting for CV in general if anime art was inevitable). Far more fitting if they went to appeal to Naruto, Bleach, or Code Geass(urgh).

It would have to be done in the right style definitely.

I like anime, but certain anime style does not fit CV and I felt what was wrong with CVDOS and CVPOR was that it had that "camply" anime flare to it.

For me, it would have to be a more dark and gothic style of anime similar to Berserk,Trinity Blood, or Hellsing for example.

What do you mean by "Current anime designs"?

Because from what i see, most current anime designs are pretty bland shitty moeblob stuffs, because that's what the otakus want, and the otakus are the entire market.

Why not just make a CV anime at that point also? I'd be behind that. something resembling vampire Hunter D or Hellsing Ultimate or something.
Title: Re: On the other hand...

Brothers Conflict, Free!, Saint Seiya Omega and Shingeki no Kyojin are actual anime and aren't moeblob. That's not exactly what all otakus want (I agree that great part of them are like that) and they dint are completely the entire market, there is people that watch it casually too, they are minority but they still count :P

I didnt mentioned Naruto, One Piece and Toriko on purpose, since they are a trend, we call it "modinha" here, its like something that is overated, is good but not like someone else says, but people say that its that cool ONLY because they hear another people saying this and they want to be part of something. So I try to ignore these series a bit, even if they are interesting, their Brazilian fanbase at least in some percentage acts like weaboos.

Not just the otaku moe stuff, there is a trend right now to appeal to the otome group.

Whoohoo~ speaking of otome power!

You mentioned BroCon!?! damn... I should really watch that one. Wait, have you watched it?

On topic: They should make sure that they get the pretty bishounen character designs and the amazing voice actors. Well, CV always gets awesome Japanese voice actors, so I guess that is a given.

I don't think ANY of those you listed have the right "style" for a CV anime(or anime based game). That's just me, though. It has little to do with my actual liking of them too. I love One Piece and Saint Seiya, but those styles are TOTALLY wrong for CV. It's like getting Akira Toriyama to as lead artist from the next CV. I love Toriyama's style(I know some dislike it, but I've always respected it and love it for what it is), but it's just no right for Castlevania. I'd go for something darker, more mature style. An anime style that focuses on more on tight designs and less accented facial features, yet highly detailed.

I agree. An anime style CV can work if the style was similar to the series you mentioned. The Hellsing Ultimate series is one of my favorites.

We just can't have the style we saw in DoS and PoR. That style is too bright and cheerful. It reeks of what you would expect in a Saturday morning kid's show. Yuck!!! Definitely not meant for CV.

Heretic.

Got to agree that Amano would be perfect for Castlevania, though.

As for the main topic, they definitely should try it at least one more time. I don't get why people always think anime has to be wacky. I guess my DVDs are diferent.

Good old user downvoting posts just for the sake of doing it (but without posting his own opinion).
Don't worry Intersection, he always does it to me, like in the first post here, which isn't even an opinion.

Well, I guess everyone chooses what kind of anime, since I didn't specified it well. But I was thinking about something like the anime I usually watch. Like Sora No Otoshimono, Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka or High School DxD, only with CV background.

Oh man, definitely do it in old 80s/90s anime styles! With textured cell shading to boot! Oh my god, if they could get Hideyuki Kikuchi to script the next Castlevania game, that'd be soooooo fucking epic!

I'd buy a Castlevania game if Madhouse did the artwork and it was in Satoshi Kon's style. It has to be Yoshitaka Amano's style or Satoshi Kon's style, no other way around it.

Something just exploded/popped outside. Bright flash and loud noise. Everyone in the neighborhood went out to look. My cat's eyes are bugging out still 60 seconds later. Still dunno what it was.

Oh. hehehe, I guess I should wait til the entire season is over. Then do a marathon.  ;)

Yup. It depends largely on the illustrator. The studios just deals with animating the base artwork.
Get the proper illustrator, add a good budget for studio, then it is good to go. I hate it when studios are not given enough money, it really shows on the changes in quality of the animation.

That's exactly how I felt about those animes, people told me over and over that they were the best thing out there, but when I got to watch them myself, they just didn't appeal to me as much as I thought they would. I agree with you, they do have an interesting story and take place in their own realm, but it irks me a bit how they seem a little over-rated.

And as for Castlevania, I don't think people would be completely against anime style if done right. I mean I'm a CV fan myself and played almost every single game, and unlike many fans, I appreciate the different variations that the series takes sometimes, because it keeps the series fresh and alive, even if some people think it's bad or not very Castlevania-ish.

I just love that kind of modern generic anime design (RtV, SnO, HSDxD, KWZdk...).

Not only it is full of moe pandering bullshit, it's the lowest I've seen KyoAni going so far. This studio is a fucking joke, they only do safe anime these years.
Shingeki no Kyojin is a better example of "modinha" than One Piece, seriously. But both are exactly this.

That's fine if you like it. I personally believe there is a place for everthing(as well as every type of art style). You just gotta know what works best. That also means not everything will work or at least work to be beneficial. I see it like, the dreamers idea of building a house on the beach where your yard can meet the ocean is a fantasy that sound beautiful if, in reality, it wasn't impossible, because you have to be realistic about the tide and such. Sometimes things just don't fit or mix well, and will never.

The generic anime is, IMO, very good if you want to make harem sim/rpg or a dating sim. Hell, as far as anime is concerned, I sometimes feel in the mood for something generic or cutesy(I'm pretty in tune with my masculinity to say that).

While like most modern media I find little that jumps out at me in today's anime, I don't find it inherently bad. It's just a lot easier to separate the wheat from the chaff after a few years have settled the dust. That said today and especially through the decades there's been such a wide variety of styles in anime that it's hard to give a "yes" or "no" answer to whether I'd like more anime influence in the games because well, which influence?

(I think the artist must have had something against the 90s with the weird cheek shape and exaggerated eyes, but otherwise very good.)

I believe a lot of the objections to more anime style in the series comes from memories of DoS and PoR. I think the real trouble with the art in those games didn't come from the fact that it was more anime-like but stemmed, like many other problems, from an unreasonably restrictive schedule and budget. IIRC IGA said in at least one interview that he loved Ayami Kojima's work and thought she was a genius, but you can't rush genius and she really couldn't work well in a tight schedule. The artists who took up the illustration reigns probably had to work very fast and consequently felt little attachment to or passion for the series.

All that said I'd certainly be a liar if I pretended I didn't like many of Castlevania's dabblings with anime in the past. I enjoy RoB and Bloodline's styles and I adore the artwork of the N64 titles.

To me a big part of the series charm is that, like Berserk, Castlevania is a work that takes cliche Western horror and fantasy ideas and gives them a fresh twist partly because the author(s) are coming from a different cultural perspective. When done well the anime style is just a more pronounced expression of the Eastern influences that help make the series special.

90 is like Saber J and I like it (not for a CV game though).
Title: Re: On the other hand...

90s had more style than just Saber's.

And studios don't define the style explicitly, but the art directors associated with the studios define the styles, and when a studio is supervised by the same directors and key animators year after year after year, each studio develops its own style. Studio 4oC has developed its own style seen both under Mike Arias's direction and Masaaki Yuasa's direction because one of the key animators/directors was Shoujirou Nishimi. He's as much a part of the studio as anyone else and he defines their style. Prior to Nishimi holding the position, it was Mutsuo Koseki, who worked for Madhouse and Studio Ghibli before, thus his style for Spriggan was different than what we see in S4C's works these days. Madhouse has had different directors and as such different styles, which is why I specifically stated it'd have to be Madhouse using Kon's or Amano's styles; they'd be able to pull that off, at least Kon's style, because they've worked with it for so long. Now, I would be willing to let S4C handle Castlevania, but they'd have to bring back their old staff and keep Nishimi, Arias, and Yuasa out of it; S4C did better under Kon's and Hidekazu Ohara's direction.

From the sounds of things, what people want is S4C under Yusuke Takeda's direction again (Berserk, Blood, Fatal Fury, GITS:SAC, .hack//Quantum, Sakura Taisen, Slayers: The Motion Picture, Gundam Wing). I wouldn't mind seeing him get hired on for Castlevania.

This post gave me an idea for a new topic...

90s had more style than just Saber's.

You dont got it, I was talking about this image shared by Ratty, this girls looks like a character from Saber J  xD

I think Pfil wants something like this

But this conversation made me remember this:

This style is sexy as hell and make Sonia even more hotter, I would like this to be a good example.

This one is cool too

To me a big part of the series charm is that, like Berserk, Castlevania is a work that takes cliche Western horror and fantasy ideas and gives them a fresh twist partly because the author(s) are coming from a different cultural perspective. When done well the anime style is just a more pronounced expression of the Eastern influences that help make the series special.
I completely agree with that.

From the image, 00 all the way! But I'm more of current decade style, right now.

90 is like Saber J and I like it (not for a CV game though).
Yes, it is! It reminded me instantly about SJtoX!
And you nailed it pretty good with the style I'd want, though the original topic was only to see fans reaction (my reaction would be like the Fry image when he says: "Shut up and take my money!").

Ahh yes I somehow forgot about Legends. It's a pity we never got to see Sonia in 3D, and that her in-game graphics couldn't live up to her cutscene and manual/cover illustrations. I'd also like to add that I don't think the artwork in DoS and PoR are as bad as people say, or bad at all really. I do personally prefer Ayami Kojima's art and find it much more atmospheric as I suspect most here do.
But I don't think there's actually a lack of quality in the portrait/illustration art of DoS/PoR, comes down to taste etc. Of course the shift inbetween AoS and DoS is jarring and I think hurts the latter game since as one of the few direct sequels in the series* the sense of artistic continuity is more important than it normally would be.

*Depending of course on how you define "direct", I mean starring the same central characters within a short frame of time. And especially if the actual games themselves are made within a reasonably short time of each other like CV1/SQ CVA/BR RoB/SOTN
