Title: Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse finally on the Wii U Virtual Console/3DS eShop
Post by: Dremn on June 27, 2014, 11:31:48 AM
Nintendo eShop - Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y40ZWMwwILU#ws)
So when are we gonna get a remake of this game?

I have never used Alucard's BatForm on that particular section (only because I'm a Heart-Hoarder). Glad to see it, but I bought this on Wii already so maybe it'll have a cheap upgrade price to Wii-U? I forgot how much it costs to upgrade...

Picked this up for my 2DS today. Now I have the whole trilogy on my 2DS. :D

This is exactly why I never buy any Virtual Console games.
Well I don't "need" to upgrade it. The vWii version plays on my gamepad just fine (though I still have to use the classic controller/wiimote to play it instead of the gamepad itself)
This would be a luxury thing to do as my Wii and Wii-U emulate Castlevania III just as nicely (if not better?) than the Virtual Console version. I bought it more as a Castlevania fan than to actually play the game. You should know that by now.

Doesn't mean they should be trying to stiff you though. They're seriously lagging behind, making you rebuy the Virtual Console title for each device owned, and or upgrade at a price. It's a milking tactic, plain and simple.
And sure, you could remove them from the loop and emulate it as you mentioned. It would be nice to have a legitimate copy though, without being boned for a few dollars every time you want to play it on a different Nintendo console. I'd seriously buy a bunch of games if I knew I could play them on both my Wii and 3DS. Extra points knowing I'd have them there and fully featured if I get a WiiU too.
The fact that they JUST implemented cross console eShop accounts tells you everything you need to know on how backwards Nintendo's network policies are. The WiiU 'upgrade' charge is the epitome of milking bullshit. Don't think for a second it isn't deliberate, and completely targeted at our demographic (old gamers) hoping to cash in on the nostalgia.

Blasphemy! It'll happen! You'll see! Right after the remake of Final Fantasy 7, and Chrono Trigger!
:'(
(Seriously remake Simon's Quest already though.)
Chrono Trigger doesn't need a remake since an updated re-release came out for the DS (I say re-release because there was already a release for Playstation a while back). The DS version is the most complete. My nephew played the living shit out of that.
But yes, they do need to remake Simon's Quest. MetroidQuest's PC version is just too faithful of a version, down to exact locations.
I do agree that milking you for every version of a game is bad form on Nintendo's behalf. The way it works right now is, if you own (bought) a VirtualConsole version of a game, you pay a very reduced (I think it's a dollar) price to upgrade to the Wii-U version, which gives you access to Miiverse in order to do social interaction regarding the game(s). For people who don't want to pay that dollar (could be a buck fifty), they can always play the Wii version they bought originally for free.
However, the way it SHOULD be should be like this: -You bought a legitimate virtual console version of a game. -You should, by cross-play nature, be allowed to play this game on Wii, Wii-U, and 3DS, all for one price, that price being what you originally paid for it.
They are indeed dropping the ball and do appear to be nickel-and-diming you by not having this feature. To be fair, PS4/Vita only recently got this feature... though I recall some blurbs online about such functionalities also being in the PS3/PSP, but I'm not sure.
...Nintendo people are trying to get there, though... that magical Apple-Like future where one purchase is playable in all devices... We really don't need it, but I doubt we'll get an original/new Castlevania anytime soon either. I'd settle for a remake/reimagining of an older game if it comes down to it.

well thanks for the heads up Oswalden, although we all have played cv3 since we were small childs, especially uzo and i. however i'm sure you agree, if Cv adventure Rebirth was ported/rereleased, then we would be more happy about it. we arent going anywhere.

Still have my working cart, 2 working NES systems, plus the PC release with the first 2 games and both Contras, so I'm good.

Amen, I was going to mention that too. I mean how many times do we have to pay for 20 and sometime even 30 year old titles to have the convenience of playing on a next gen system?

I did a major accomplishment. I beat CVIII with Trevor alone no restore points or anything. Not an easy task. And while I do have the nes version(I beaten it with Sypha afew times) I like talking about it on miiverse as well as showing that certain things are possible. Oh and I think passwords work I tried it on Simon's quest so maybe it should work on cvIII.

I got a Gamecube compatible Wii a few months ago with still no plans to get a Wii U. With just regular Wii, all three NES, Super IV, the Japanese PCE Engine Rondo of Blood, and Adventure Rebirth are all avaiable for download. Are they all still available for Wii U or do you have to wait for the Wii U specific? Just curious what the big deal of WII U versions are? I get the impressions it's ability to transfer to and play on the 3DS, access to some game specific forums, maybe recording your play, and sharing your recordings?

The Wii-U versions offer Off-TV play with the Gamepad as the input device. This is different than porting your games from your Wii to a Wii-U, in which case they'd be available only in "Wii Mode" which, though you can use the Gamepad as a screen, you still have to use another input device (Wiimote/Classiccontroller) as the controller.
The bonus of the Wii-U version is the awesome Miiverse community: Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Miiverse Link (https://miiverse.nintendo.net/titles/14866558073328042284/14866558073328042296)
There you can share accomplishments or draw art, etc. all related to the game, which is something no other console can really do, all built into the Wii-U and your Nintendo Network ID (NNID).
I've been doodling on there, hehehe. :)
Some cool posts from fans of the game. It's quite popular! So I'm happy CVIII gets brand-new love from Wii-U fans:

Awesome art, Jorge. Also yes, everything about the final stage in CVIII is still beautiful to this day. Those graphics still hold up well, but that's true of most Castlevania games.

My eyes could just be making this up, but I swear the Wii U VC games look better than in WiiMode due to being 1080p and not upscaled to such. I notice sharper and more defined edges, whereas in WiiMode the games are still slightly blurred.
The options for a save state and custom button mapping also make the Wii U VC really great. I hope Rondo gets brought over, and that we see SNES Dracula X soon and an announcement for Bloodlines.

I see someone in the MiiVerse community has Trevor on the pendulum with "I came in like a wrecking ball" written underneath. Surprised I hadn't heard that joke before XD. Also still have my cart and NES so I'm good.

The VC games look better on the Gamepad than on the TV in Wii-U mode, FYI. It seems they're not being scaled completely. If I'm playing and using the TV, I enjoy playing 'em on vWii mode. However, if I'm on the gamepad, the screen is awesome.
Also, it seems CVIII looks pretty amazing on the 3DS, based on the screenshots people have put up.

Damn that's some cool stuff. Well CvIII is the just the third CV game I've bought twice. I still have my NES cart. Unfortunately my original good NES is 20 miles away at my mom's. I have a second crappy more recent used one at home that rarely works and a Super 8 adapter for SNES that first the colors went bad and now have gone B&W. So I bought the Wii VC version. Both NES's have a replacement 72 pin connector but the one has something other problem where I just get a white screen most of the time.
Even if I can't be a part of the MiiVerse for the game at least we can see the awesome stuff on it still. We'll just make this thread our MiiVerse for outsiders.

Too bad Miiverse won't let one embed the posts in URL or IMG mode, just in HTML embed, which only Admins can use (sorry!). Otherwise, yeah, a Miiverse thread would be so awesome.
Don't know why, but this posts makes me laugh even harder the more I look at it:

I hope that dude's coffee table is pretty durable. Mighty commendable flippage.
Anyway, I heard about Grant being able to throw daggers right off the bat in the Japan version and then I found it odd when I got the axe and he was still only throwing daggers while grappling and could only throw them with up+attack while standing or jumping. In the US version though unfortunately starting with a stabbing dagger rather than throwing as a normal attack and you can't attack without a subweapon when grappling, you automatically throw the more powerful axe instead when you have it. Sideways it arcs. Downward it goes straight and of course through enemies without disappearing like the dagger.

Gotta play by different rules when replaying a game. This time I'll try to get all four characters to Dracula's throne. Each will follow a different path.
This time, the rules I'll play by are: - When meeting a new character while already playing with an earlier encountered new character, create a restore point before deciding to take the new character or leave them behind, and note which character will be left behind. - When there's a fork in the path and Trevor has a partner that he has not "ditched", it is possible for them to "split up". Create a restore point, and have Trevor take one path, have the other character take the other path when possible. Then "ditch" the other character (don't use them). - When all lives are lost, record the password. Then "switch" to playing another character, either by loading a restore point or password for where they were last. When playing as another character, don't use Trevor. Cycle through all characters that have been encountered in this manner. - When defeating a boss or reaching a new area, it is optional to switch characters. If a restore point is not being used for anything else, a restore point can be saved to save the current progress. Otherwise, kill yourself off and save the new password. - Any character can "rest" at any time (don't play their game for a while). - If one character is having difficulty clearing an area, it is okay to keep continuing them without switching characters. - Between splitting up at forks in the road and going separate ways when encountering a new character, try to cover as many paths as possible. There is no back-tracking, so some paths might not be covered. - If looking at a map of where all these paths lead and converge, it's possible for Trevor to "wait up" for another character who had taken a different path to reach the stage where he is at. Don't play Trevor's game until the other character has made it. Once they have, Trevor can be used in their game again, until they have split up again. - Only Trevor will work with a partner. If a non-Trevor character who is going it alone encounters another character, they can follow the same path, but each must clear it separately. Trevor can switch between his partner as long as he has not ditched them. - Because only one restore point can be saved at a time, it may be necessary to retread some portions of a stage a character has already cleared occasionally. It's okay to use restore points "cheaply" if possible when retreading ground already covered. Try to have all the passwords you might need available. A password can be recorded at any time that a restore point is "available" by creating a restore point, killing yourself off, recording the password, and then restoring the restore point. Or use a name that you can find passwords for in game guides. Alternatively, to avoid a potential restore point conflicts in the future, it might be a good idea to "kill yourself off" when reaching a new stage in order to grab it's password. - If so desired, different characters' games can be run on different devices or platforms. One could be on the Wii Virtual Console, while another on the Wii U Virtual Console, and another on the 3DS. This could reduce the amount of password-entering needed when switching between characters. - Keep playing until all characters have reached Dracula. Once they have, have Trevor partnered up with a different character for each of Dracula's three forms. Use restore points liberally when switching partners after defeating one of Dracula's forms in order to get them to the proper point of the battle.

Triple shot and boomerang make Death a lot easier. Second form just meanders in a pattern back and forth, sometimes moving one way more than the other. If you have these items, you're doing pretty good at that point.

Oh I've got a good method of my own for dealing with him since the little prick was asking for it for the longest time. But I don't use the boomerang. It's the triple shot and the axe. The axe is nice because of it's arc that can hit both the sickles and Death at the same time. Death's second form has also been known to block boomerangs but he gets no satisfaction from the axe. So I just carve that bloody ingrate up like a roast!

Yeah Boomerangs bounce right off the giant Skull, unless you throw them away from it and they pass through the skull on the way back. But the Axe subweapon, HolyWater subweapon, and the Flame spell are the best for dealing with it. The LightningBolt spell could be good but it doesn't track the skull's movements well, so it often ends up missing.
Title: Re: Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse finally on the Wii U Virtual Console/3DS eShop
Post by: X on July 10, 2014, 09:51:33 AM
In fairness the Lightning spell isn't too bad. The skull is big enough and it's movements almost encompass the whole screen so it's bound to be hit but the spell one way or another. I find using the holy water to be tricky since Death has to be hovering around the floor or platforms in order for the stuff to work on him successfully. His skull would be easier to tag with holy water then his first form considering the size difference and path of movement.
