On March 20th, 1997 Akumajō Dracula X: Gekka no Yasōkyoku was released in Japan. It would later become better known as "Symphony of the Night" in other parts of the world.
A turning point for the Castlevania series and a milestone for video gaming in general, it is still loved to this day.
So now would be a good time to share thoughts or memories on the game. :)
I remember I first played it about 13 or so years after it came out, playing 30 hours over one long weekend, because the game is just that good. I really need to get around to finally playing my Saturn port I bought a few years ago.
-
Already? Damn.
-
Ha! I didn't know that. Today I turned 37, too.
-
Just wait till 2017. Then the game will be 20 years old. How old do ya feel now, eh? Anyone? Me? Yes... :P
I had no idea this game was released until me and my bro saw it at a video game rental shop. We picked it up and it was the best decision we ever made. I was skeptic at first because most games for the PS1 were 3D and I still wasn't into them yet. I'm a bit of a late-bloomer on many fronts.
-
I remember renting it and expecting another classicvania as I had not read much about since CV64 was what was really being covered by gaming mags.
At first I did not care for it, but then I realized it played like Metroid and became very invested. When I found the inverted dungeon I about shit my pants.
-
Three more years and we can get SotN totally wasted.
-
Lol, D9.
Man, I feel old again. (for the nth time this week)
I love that game!
Hmmm... I posted my Alucard cross stitch 2 days ago. Wow, what timing!
-
Playing as Alucard was one of the great experiences in gaming. Amazing how things have changed.
Time does fly. I am 42 on Monday and it makes wonder if I am the oldest guy in here. I doubt it.
Remember, you are only as old as you smell.
-
What a way to invite immortality, lol.
-

Oh cool, late Happy Birthday! ^_^

B-B-B-But you're 29....

I still remember picking it up from funcoland the day it came out. I played it it non stop eventually beating it with the help of my older brother. I lacked the patience for some parts. I remember getting very frustrated the first time through. I was like 12...
I also remember having to send it off to get it doctored for scratches. This was before the at home cd buffers were out. It cost me $10 to get it fixed so I could play through a second time!
It was truly a masterpiece!
-
Oh crap, I feel... quite young actually. I was 6 when SotN came out, but only played it way later.
-
I can't believe it has been this long. I was 12 when this game came out. Where is my cane? I'm getting old...
-
I'm older than all of you. I was in my negative years when the game came out. P:
-
It makes me a little bit happy that I'm not as old as some of you guys. I was 11 when it came out. hahaha.
-

Happy Birthday :)
Thanks! :3
-
happy Birthday SoTN
The game which I still find new ways to play even after beating it 100+ times already, with and without cheats, though the Talisman 999 Luck run was most broken.
-
SoTN is barely legal fellas!
-
I think right around 30 is a common age around here Shiroi.

Yeah. I fit that category very well.

Ha! I just turned 30 back in February.

Me too. ???

I was a 17-year-old punk when this game came out, and I'm a 34-year-old punk now.
This game totally justified the original Playstation console for me (other games were fun, but nowhere near as good). And I didn't even know about the inverted castle back then!
-
I first played this emulated on my laptop.
then I bought the 360 port
and just the other day, I managed to snag a "like new" used copy for 30 bucks.

Congrats! That's a good purchase. :)
I'm assuming it's the NA version, right?
-
pretty sure it is
-
It was my second CV game, the first being Dracula X for SNES. When I saw a guy wearing blue in the prologue I was almost certain that I had already played a game in the series, but only some years later with the internet becoming popular that I've discovered that I was right.
I remember that I liked to buy Joseph's Cloak and paint it blue to be like Richter lol
Happy birthday SotN, happy birthday Castlevania and I wish that a bright future awaits you and your sucessors! ;D

I always did this too. But I didn't pretend to be Richter. Instead I made the Joseph's clock white, armed him with the Lunar rod weapon and pretended Alucard was Kunzite (Malachite) from Sailor Moon ;D
Yes, you heard right. Deal.

Now we need someone that used a Beryl Circlet to pretend to be Queen Beryl xD
-
Right, I forgot about that circlet :-[
SotN has quite a bit of Sailor moon tid-bits. Not surprising since SotN came out while Sailor Moon was at the height of its popularity. The show had already wrapped up in Japan with it's fifth and final season, however American audiences were still receiving it.

No books or technical FAQs. The only thing we can learn about SotN is through IGA's interviews.
As for the amazing spritework, IGA specifically mentions in many instances that he had an amazing team of genius spriters who all but one had left Konami.
