Title: Official Resident Evil 2 remake announced
Post by: Claimh Solais on August 12, 2015, 12:32:54 PM
It was recently revealed that Capcom has given the green light to an official remake of Resident Evil 2 (http://www.destructoid.com/the-resident-evil-2-remake-project-is-officially-happening-303928.phtml). Spearheading the project is Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, who handled the remake of the first game, so there's a good chance it will be done in a similar manner to that one, but given that there are no official details, who knows?

Fans have been asking for this for 13 years now, so I can't wait to see what they do with it. RE2 is one of my favorite games ever so I hope a remake at least lives up to the original.

Thoughts?

As long as they give it the same treatment as the RE1 remake it should turn out ok.
Now if they start with the shenanigans Square is pulling with the FF7 reboot, then to hell with it.

Best in the series.

As long as they follow the same path with the RE1 Remake this should turn out to be fantastic. If they add the option for fixed camera angles and over the shoulder then everybody wins.

I mean, we already got a taste of what to most likely expect with Darkside Chronicles....

That said...IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME.

Sad that it won't be like the original REmake in that Hideki Kamiya won't be back to direct, but we'll see how it goes.

Preach it, sister.

I'm quite happy to hear it, but I'm also taking this with the same grain of salt I've taken Square's promises with for years now. Don't betray my cautious optimism, Capcom - neither of our wallets can take it.

I'd love this, honestly. Cold Fear on the PS2 did this back in the day, having both options. So I think Capcom can pull it off with Resident Evil.

Spearheading the project is Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, who handled the remake of the first game [...]

I'm not sure who that is, but it appears his work on REmake was mocap engineer (http://residentevil.wikia.com/wiki/Yoshiaki_Hirabayashi) (also: MobyGames credit (http://www.mobygames.com/game/resident-evil-)). What made REmake so great was the involvement on RE1's original director, Shinji Mikami.

As Sindra stated, it's unfortunate that Hideki Kamiya (RE2's director) won't be involved, or said as much about a week before RE2make was officially announced. Apparently he doesn't like horror games yet at the same time would rather see the remake "from the eyes of a fan," stating that knowing all the nooks and crannies of the development made the original not fun for him.

I'm hopeful an RE2 remake will be good and that Capcom currently has the talent to pull it off.

Sorry, shoulda clarified. He actually handled the recent remaster of the remake.

And as for Hideki Kamiya, he stated he wouldn't want to work on an RE2 remake with Capcom (http://www.relyonhorror.com/latest-news/hideki-kamiya-would-work-with-capcom-again-but-not-on-a-resident-evil-2-remake/), despite saying he would love to work with Capcom again.

OK, REmaster (lololo never gets old) was a solid enough effort, I just hope Producer "H" has it in him to assemble a creative team to create what is, essentially, a brand new game. I'm sure they'll stay faithful to the original PSX game, I just hope they see what makes the original work so good from a gameplay mechanics angle, spruce that up like Mikami and team had done with REmake, and add some cool new additions to make it a new experience beyond just new graphics and sound. Remakes or even ports (I'm lookin' at you, Gameloft's Earthworm Jim) can be really mucked up with poor coding and controls so that those familiar with the originals can feel that something's off.

Flashback really comes to mind here.

By the time I get around to finally playing my Dreamcast copy of the original game the REmake will probably be on steam sale so  ;D

Been on the backburner for years now. Thought about playing it this October but my girlfriend wants to play through Silent Hill together instead.

Wasn't till my girlfriend wanted to see me play all the Resident Evils that I finally got around to playing RE2 in its entirety (tried a few times before but only got a couple hours in). Really is one of the best in the series—right after the remake of the original and RE4 (the latter of which may be my favorite just from a gameplay perspective). Now I know just why people have been clamoring for a remake all these years.

I wonder if this announcement had anything to do with the fan-build made in UE3?

Maybe. I would think if anything, it is a combination of that and the FFVII remake.

Capcom's also been getting their shit together lately and really giving people what they want. An RE2 remake is something people have been wanting for 13 years now. I don't imagine a release any time soon but I do imagine they'd release it on the 20th anniversary of RE2.

I just wanted to take a moment to point out in the new Wesker Mode for the Resident Evil 0 HD port, Rebecca is wearing what appears to be an early prototype version of Jill's mind control brooch doodad.

You can now return to your regularly scheduled RE2 thread.

This. The money is in remaking masterpieces today, because large companies who were previously more about 'crafting excellent games' are now about attracting masses and the all mighty dollar. Remakes of popular games are a good way to feed the beast and get newer gen gamers interested in older games they may have missed/ chosen to miss due to newer games being in abundance.
