Title: It seriously burns me that there was never a Vita Castlevania
Post by: Lumi Kløvstad on December 12, 2015, 12:09:25 PM
You might have expected one. After all, Castlevania's been represented on almost every handheld that meant anything.

It's also a name that tends to sell well.

When Mirror of Fate HD was announced, I'd though that finally the Vita would be recognized, but it never happened (and to hear Eric Alvarez talk about it, a Vita version was briefly mentioned in a developer's meeting, but never seriously considered).

I'd enjoyed Dracula X Chronicles and the refined SOTN port on PSP tremendously (I actually wore out the UMD!), but was always slightly disappointed that it was a remake and rerelease, and not new content. I'd hoped for a Castleroid or even a 3D Castlevania on Vita, given what the hardware was capable of, but Konami, like almost every other company, kept their distance from the system save for some animesque low-risk-low-reward games and then used the resulting low sales as justification to completely abandon the system altogether. Konami doesn't get sole blame for this (everyone, after all, was guilty of this almost from the outset), but it is so appropriately them to do so.

Seriously, the Vita's ability to do a decent 3D Castlevania (albeit a linear one like Lords of Shadow) cannot possibly be understated. The analog sticks and touchscreen would have made for a great combination (like dragging your finger across the touchscreen, or even the back panel to flail the whip defensively instead of holding the attack button and waggling the directional inputs as in older games). The graphics would have likely been impressive for a handheld, and one could easily expect it to control responsively beyond what could be done on the DS or PSP.

In the end, I doubt we'll ever find out what potentially awesome Castlevania adventures (or adventures of any sort) that might have been on the Vita; especially given that it seems like Sony was conspiring to murder their own system since day one, and game developers seemed only too happy to help them.

It's sucks that we didn't get an exclusive CV on vita but you have 3 CV's you can download and play on it.

Chronicles, SOTN, and Drac x Chronicles.

Aside from that, there are tons of great vita games. Especially the Japanese ones which are abundant.

If you want something CV like get muramasa rebirth. It's great.

The system is under the radar. But it's games are fantastic. It reminds me of what it was like having a neo group pocket color.

At least the Vita is getting Bloodstained.

But yeah, a Vita CV would've been nice. I would've especially liked a metroidvania with gorgeous 2D graphics. Shame it's never going to happen now with both CV and Vita being basically dead.

I am interested in Salt & Sanctuary though, which looks like it might've been inspired by CV (and Dark Souls). Dunno when it's out though.

Yeah, totally getting it on both PS4 and Vita.

I have not heard of this game. Tell me more?

Sadly you can't get CV Chronicles on the Vita anymore. I've tried many times, but came to the party too late for that title.

Not even by downloading it to your PS3 and manually moving the installer to the Vita? Strange.

You have to download it on PS3 and transfer it.

That's the only way. But it works like a charm.

Also the Japanese region version of CV Chronicles supports PS Vita, and it has differences compared to BOTH US version and old Jap version (The invulnerable time of Medusa boss, the hitbox of sub-weeapon, and other small stuff)

*chuckle* That still doesn't inspire much confidence. Ah, well.

To be honest, the Vita was going nowhere fast :(

I wouldn't have minded a remake of CV:IV maybe since PSP got Dracula X I guess :p

That tends to happen when you don't advertise your product at all and then overcharge for it for the few people who know it exists, and then include tons of hidden costs.

The PS Vita could have made it as far as the PSP, but Sony got unrepentantly greedy and by the time that admitted to the huge mea culpa, the damage was done and they'd murdered their own system. After that, the murder became far more deliberate. Never before had I ever seen such promising hardware so ruthlessly squandered by its own maker.

i'm thankful it was never made on the Vita so I didn't have to buy a Vita.  however, if I owned a Vita, I'd be very sad.

So I was playing DXC on my Vita (and sucking at it because it's been a while), but I came to the conclusion that even if they'd just kept the PSP's graphical fidelity for a Vita game, a CGI Castleroid in the classic universe (or one very like it) on the Vita would have ROCKED.

Given how satisfied I was overall with Mirror of Fate HD, I am convinced that a Vita Castleroid would have knocked my damn socks off.

Would've loved to have a CV on the Vita. Such an awesome, overlooked handheld.

Considering how fun it was to play Guacamelee on the Vita, a new Metroidvania would've been incredible.

It's not like any of the hero phones that run 3 or more gigs of RAM and a Helios X10/Snapdragon 810/Exynos/Kirin CPU with killer graphics get anything better from Konami -- this despite their claims of moving towards a "mobile first" strategy "because that's where the money is".

Konami's been listening to Wu-Tang clan a bit too much.

I would argue that a 2D game is probably a whole lot cheaper than producing one of those large scale 3D ones with a huge dev staff. Much more to gain by staying traditional since it's less of an investment cost. Bloodstained ain't exactly doing bad, either, if one needed proof.

Fuck 3D.

Vita should have been the platform we got a beautiful hand drawn 2d Vania on.
But it likely would have been on vita/PS3/ps4 with cross buy and cross save functionality. Which would have been even better.

And that would have been the ultimate CV of my dreams.

But instead we got mirror of fate... ????????

That's what I'm talking about.
Companies are only "losing" to projected profit margins. At the end of the day if it costs a company 3 million to make a game (make as in concept, development, employ staff, hire an office, produce the physical copies etc) which has been backed for 10 million, they made 7 million in 2 years.

I don't remember any large companies recently saying they've made heaps of profit off of anything, even say a company who makes popular franchise games. They always say sales are up/ down but the company is still struggling to make ends meet or took a hit etc. They're all full of shit imo. People are just hoping the good times will last forever.

For example Nintendo with the Wii U which has apparently bombed, say on average a Wii U costs what 300 USD? And say it costs them (at a worst case scenario) 100 USD to get them onto shelves by the time everything (factory, fabrication, printing, boxing and transport) is considered. They've still sold 10 million units, which multiplied by 200 USD is still 2 billion dollars which is a lot of fucking money... Not to mention that games cost a lot, Amiibo's are a fucking rip off but people still buy them, gamepad and controllers cost A LOT. I have no sympathy for companies of this magnitude who claim to be losing money.
