Title: Castlevania's many colorful "Game Over" taunts
Post by: cecil-kain on May 23, 2008, 04:36:20 PM
Anyone have any audio clips hiding somewhere on these internets?

Hmm, not sure about that. You mean the game over music? I'm sure you can download them all from the Dungeon.

Speaking of Gameovers, does anyone have a screenshot of CoD's gameover, the one with all the drops of blood? I need it for a school project.

Were making dragsters in Woodshop, so I need something to decorate mine with. I wanted to have the front be covered in black paper with red drops on it to look like blood, but since I can't find anything to look like that, I figured I could just edit the game over screen with paint and make it so I can cut out the right shape to fit the front of my car. I'm also going to have a cool sword on it, a flaming skull, and the CV: SotN title/insignia thingy. Oh yeah, and the CV cross + bat thing from DoS & PoR. I would have put a pentagram on too, but that wouldn't be "school appropriate".

Why not just drip red paint over the edge? Save some trouble.

He's talking about the different taunts you can hear on the Game Over screen by dying in different situations in Symphony.  These were in the Japanese version and, if I recall correctly, recorded but never properly implemented in the English version.

Unfortunately, I don't know where you could download them.

Yeah, but my teacher's being an ass and won't let us use more than one color of paint on it. All decor has to be printed from a computer.

Actually, I wasn't looking for just SotN's taunts.  Lament and Curse also have plenty to go around --some bosses even have multiple taunts if I remember correctly.

I know I heard some weird stuff when a frozen half killed me one time in the catacombs.

Well let's have at it!  Those with the skill, bring on those rips!  And while we wait.. maybe we can talk about some of the more memorable taunts?

All of these through the prism of hazy memories...

DXC Succubus to Richter --
"now we can be together forever!"

DXC SotN Richter to Alucard
"what a waste of time..."

Original SotN ? to Alucard
"Gamer Over wuhuhhahahaha!"

LoI Death? to Leon
"Game Over comes to all"

"Game Over comes to all"

I thought it was "Death overcomes all", but I'll have to check to be sure.

Anyhow, my favorite is CoD Dracula to Hector: "You die at my hands. You should be honored!"

Oh, I also have Dracula's taunts from CoD too. If you want them add me on AIM. My name is Rugalitarian.

It's Death overcomes all, not Game overcomes all. >.>

I also remember Walter's. "Now you join her!" Obviously talking about Sara.

wow, u guys must die a lot in Castlevania.

Way back in the day, I played an NES game called Shadowgate.  It was a role playing game, but not in the traditional Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy sort of way...  To be brief you went through this laberynth/castle where any wrong turn resulted in death.  And each death was colorful, gruesome, and often entertaining.  The Grim Reaper would appear at the end and say with a taunting air.

"It's a sad thing that you adventures has ended here!!"

http://youtube.com/watch?v=aCeAlHQD9Eo
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pS0bZWIpE0w

And that was the best Game Over music EVAR BTW...

The point is this: Game Over is an essential part of the experience.  The taunts spoken by Richter, Shaft, Joachim, Medusa, Walter, Trevor, Isaac, St Germain, the Succubii, Death, and Dracula say so much about their character, that you're truly missing out if you just breeze on through these battles...  If I don't get my ass handed to me the first couple times, I'll die on purpose just to hear what they have to say.

They need to make one that's all like "you are dead, your friends are dead, your dog's dead, your family's dead, you suck ass at life, go outside and do something else you atrocious gamer, game over"

Wait, you make an extra save just to do this? 'Cause how else would you? I'd rather take Serio's route and just hex-edit them outta the code. Or wait for someone else to.

I for one have always believed to try to find every ounce of spoken dialogue or text in an RPG, and as such I would walk around towns of Final Fantasy games just to make sure to talk to everyone, and to make sure to hear all their different flagged-state conversations. Obviously Konami put these reverse death throes in knowing people wold hear them, so I'm glad someone enjoys them. But reloading after a save just to kill myself to hear a 3-second sound byte is just too much a hassle.

I would never do it, but that's just me.

But yeah, I remember the Shadowgate game fondly (still haven't played Shadowgate 64 though), and yeah that game over music impressed me from day one. And you die a lot more in that game cuz one wrong move in that point-and-click inventory adventure would send you to your doom (as most in this genre are accustom).

Still not as bad as Deadly Towers :P (random awful NES game reference FTW!)

bug in the code. enemies shouldn't trigger that. i once got it when a blue venus weed or even a bomb armor killed me.

Yah, I know I was just messing with him. I knew by the other ones he had listed that it was LOI or COD, but I remember Medusa especially being a pushover in SOTN.

you're abusing the hanging thing.

i made it for castlevania characters only, ones that should have never been made, not to hang every single thing because it's too easy to defeat. :P

still need a sonia sprite.

They are placeholders for an original sig I'm working on :P And Medusa SOTN wasn't just a pushover, her sprite was crappy too. She moved like a poorly done stop-animation.

There should be a few on Mr. P's Castlevania Realm. And why do you want to hang Sonia? I think that she could have been a really cool character if Iga hadn't just killed her.

dunno her role in legends wasn't good at all. she was really poorly done, copying alucard's quotes, and generally having no real personality (not that castlevania is famous for that, at least the pre storyline ones) and being a completely wasted potential.

also i could use better quality sprites. legends ones suck. i downscaled the oos guy, antraxx upscaled the hod people. i want the hanged images to keep similar proportions.

Yeah mine don't look like they match, but they are placeholders anyway. I think I took Juste's sprite from an online picture, anwyay. I tried sizing them to the POR ones you already did best I could, but I got impatient. Also, the crappy colors in HOD's sprites are never gonna look good next to the the POR ones.

Visually, Master Chief, sports one of the most boring suits of space armor I've ever seen. I coulda thought that up when I was 10.

He's not that interesting of a character at all, so I don't understand all the hype behind him, or consequently, the games. I mean, they can be fun... but they're not THAT fun.

On a side note, aside of the various Sith garments in Star Wars, nothing beats Samus's power suit design. It just looks too sick.

Sorry, off topic.
